- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Unresolved attachment state of mind, maternal care and child attachment security in two mother-child dyads(Universidad Catolica del Uruguay, 2020-01-01)This study aims to describe the attachment representations of two mothers classified as unresolved in their state of mind with respect to attachment, as well as the specific characteristics of their interactions with their children: the quality of their care and the security of the child’s attachment. The Adult Attachment Interview was used to evaluate attachment representations, the Maternal Behavior Q-Set 2.1 was used for the quality of maternal sensitivity, and the security of the child’s attachment was evaluated with the Attachment Q-Set 3.0. The results show that while attachment is unresolved in both mothers due to their own experiences of childhood abuse, their sub-classification (secure attachment in one case and insecure in the other) is associated with differences in how they perceive and respond to the child’s needs, and in the security of the child’s attachment. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Maternal sensitivity in rural Andean and Amazonian Peru(Taylor & Francis, 2020-10-14)In the current study, we observed 12 mothers with a 4-21-month-old infant for around 3 hours during their daily activities such as feeding, bathing, and soothing in the multiple-caregiver cultural contexts of rural Peru. Overall, sensitivity levels were high, with an average of 7.33 (out of 9), and seven of the twelve mothers scoring in the high range (scores 7-9), and the remaining five in the good-enough range (scores 5-6). A qualitative description of sensitive responsiveness is presented through representative examples. Notable patterns were flexibility in caregiving routines that allow for very child-centered maternal behavior; mothers' ability to multitask, combining household and agricultural work with high sensitive responsiveness to their infants' signals; the presence of multiple caregivers that ensured that the infants were well attended when mothers were temporarily unavailable; and what seems to be a culturally normative tendency to be sensitively responsive to very young children. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Convergent and criterion validity of the maternal behavior Q-Sort 3.1 in a sample of Peruvian mothers(AIDEPbgoncalves@psicologia.ulisboa.pt, 2020-01-01)The Maternal Behavior Q-Sort (MBQS) assesses the maternal sensitivity of mothers of 0-3 year-olds in natural contexts. This study presents the results of MBQS 3.1 convergent validity with version 2.1 and criterion validity with the Attachment Q-Sort (AQS). The sample was comprised of 27 Peruvian mothers with children between 8 and 11 months old, from a low socioeconomic sector in Lima. The mean age of the mothers was 27.96 years (SD=6.02) and most reported at least some high school education (63%). The maternal behavior profiles in MBQS 3.1 - sensitive, connected, and synchronic - correlated with values higher than.90 (p<.01). A strong positive association was found between versions 2.1 and 3.1 (r=.76, p<.01). Finally, a correlation of.44 (p<.05) was obtained with AQS. The MBQS 3.1 shows adequate validity indicators, which recommend its use for the measurement of maternal sensibility in Peru.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Attachment research and anti-racism: learning from Black and Brown scholars(Taylor & Francis, 2021-09-09)Preliminary evidence suggests that people and scholars of African and/or Latin American and Caribbean origin are often under-represented in mainstream attachment scholarship. In this commentary, we highlight the difficulty of conducting attachment theory research outside of the United States, particularly in Latin American countries. We reflect on the contributions by the authors of this special issue . We also identify (a) ways in which to center the experiences of Black and Brown people and scholars to push the field toward antiracism, and (b) the challenges of attachment theory and research in becoming anti-racist by considering the structural nature of racism. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Attachment theory’s core hypotheses in rural Andean Peru(Routledge, 2022-01-01)This is the first study aiming to test two universality claims of attachment theory within a rural Andean sample from Cusco, Peru. A total of 69 mothers and their children (6 to 36 months) participated. Child attachment security was assessed with the Attachment Q-set (AQS), maternal sensitivity was measured during three naturalistic episodes (free interaction, bathing, and feeding) with the Ainsworth sensitivity scale and the Maternal Behavior Q-sort (MBQS), and a cumulative maternal risk variable was calculated. Results revealed that most children displayed less characteristic secure base behaviors in the interactions with their mothers, compared to other reference samples. Furthermore, an association between maternal sensitivity and child attachment security was found, and a negative relation between maternal sensitivity and the cumulative risk variable. These results support some of the attachment theory’s universality claims, and suggest new avenues for research on assessment issues in rural samples in the Global South. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Are fathers' rearing histories associated with their involvement in childrearing? A Peruvian study(Associacao Portuguesa de Psicologia, 2022-01-01)This study compares father involvement, relative to the mother, in Peruvian families with preschool age children. We also examined father's rearing history and sociodemographic characteristics as predictors of involvement in child related activities. Two hundred and six families participated in the study. Results showed that mothers were more involved in direct and indirect care, and fathers tended to be more involved in play. Teaching/discipline and outdoor leisure activities were shared. The models tested for paternal involvement in direct, indirect care, and outdoor leisure were significant. Father s rearing history was a main predictor of direct care and outdoor leisure. Fathers' perceptions of their own mothers' care were negatively associated with their involvement in direct care; and their perceptions of their own fathers' overprotection/control were negatively associated with fathers' involvement in outdoor leisure. Results are discussed based on stereotypical gender-based role division in childrearing, and the modeling and compensatory hypotheses.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
