Item type:Publication, Water-related challenges in nexus governance for sustainable development: Insights from the city of Arequipa, Peru(Elsevier, 2020-12-10)Peru has one of the fastest-growing economies in Latin America, but there are concerns regarding how long this can be sustained. Negative environmental impacts are increasing due to the pressures of a growing urban population and competition for natural resources. This study explores stakeholder perceptions linked to nexus governance in the context of integrated management of natural resources, particularly water, and the environmental, socio-economic and governance challenges constraining the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our analysis focused on the urban and rural areas associated with the city of Arequipa, an economically dynamic region subject to extreme levels of water stress. Face-to-face interviews with key informants were conducted to identify mechanisms that have enhanced successful multi-sectoral collaboration, and to assess challenges in promoting sustainable economic development. A workshop prioritised the identified challenges and an online survey was then used to assess stakeholder interest in and influence over nexus governance of water with other natural resources. Stakeholder mapping revealed a complex network of actors involved in nexus governance, where successful collaboration could be promoted through formal and informal mechanisms, including exemplar policies and initiatives across sectors and actors. Shared visions between stakeholders were identified as well as contradictory priorities relating to the sustainable management of natural resources. A key finding that emerged was the need to promote adaptation in water and land management (SDG 6) due to perceived impacts of extreme climate events (SDG 13), urban population growth (SDG 11), and increased sectoral water demands. This situation in combination with poor governance and lack of planning has exposed the vulnerability of Arequipa water supply system to future shocks. Urgent action will be needed to raise stakeholder awareness, strengthen governance and enforcement, and agree on a collective vision for integrated land and water planning if the SDGs are to be achieved. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Does multidimensional poverty affect depression? Evidence from Peru(SAGE Publishing, 2021-11-13)The number of people in low- and middle-income countries who suffer from depression is increasing, and a significant proportion of people in these countries live in poverty. We estimated the effect of living in multidimensional poverty on experiencing symptoms associated with major depression using the 2018 Peruvian Demographic and Health Survey. We used an instrumental variables approach to overcome the potential endogeneity bias caused by the simultaneous relationship between multidimensional poverty and depression. We found that living in multidimensional poverty significantly increases depression symptom severity. This has urgent policy implications for low- and middle-income countries with limited provision of mental health services. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Social sustainability in business education(Springer, 2024-03-13)In the introduction, we frame the importance of social sustainability for business and broader society, and explain why business education has substantial power to foster it, making a significant contribution to the global collective effort aimed at achieving economic, social, and environmental sustainability. To this end, we elaborate on the concept of social sustainability, clarify how it connects to the environmental and economic dimensions of sustainability, and explain which of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasize issues related to social sustainability. Additionally, we summarize teaching innovations documented from every continent in the world that are featured in this handbook. The richness of the voices and perspectives featured, as well as their cross-disciplinarity, are at the heart of the ethos of this handbook, and we elucidate how and why higher education institutions, managers of business programs, educators, and researchers would benefit from the featured contributions. Finally, we outline some tips on how to use the handbook effectively when researching social sustainability and when implanting social-sustainability-focused SDGs in business programs, courses, and/or lesson plans in different parts of the world, considering the contextual needs of the learner, the business education provider, and the educator. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The perception of educators on gender equality: A study in Ecuador(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-06-01)Gender equality is a prerequisite for people-centered human development. This exploratory and descriptive study was conducted to investigate the perception of gender among Ecuadorian primary school teachers. Quantitative data were obtained from teachers in public and urban educational establishments. In order to collect the data, an online survey-type opinion questionnaire was applied with the aim of finding out teachers’ perception of gender equality within their institutions in educational establishments in the Republic of Ecuador, considering the dimensions of personal perceptions of the subject, the organizational culture, and the implementation of gender equality in the internal management of the educational organizations where they work. The results of the questionnaire show that teachers perceive that there is currently more receptiveness to gender issues than in the past. From the answers received, it can be concluded that people identify with gender issues, even though there is a need for elements and support to enable them to be expressed effectively, on a daily basis and sustained over time. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Challenge-based learning in entrepreneurship education: Empowering competencies towards the Sustainable Development Goals(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024-01-01)This article analyzes how Challenge Based Learning (CBL) methodology can be used in higher education to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through entrepreneurship proposals for future professionals. The results of an educational intervention in an online entrepreneurship course involving 60 undergraduate students in three cities in Mexico are presented. The methodology is a single case study that examines: 1) the students’ interests and achievement of entrepreneurship skills through the application of CBL, and 2) the final outcomes of the products presented, associated with the development of solution proposals linked to the SDGs. The results demonstrate that students improved their entrepreneurial skills and developed a greater awareness of social issues. This proposal contributes to showcasing educational experiences that incorporate the SDGs into educational practices. The findings from this research can be valuable for universities, professors, instructional designers, and individuals involved in designing courses that encompass sustainability. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, The locus of Innovation and Knowledge Management: Can an enterprise contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, just from inside? Literature Review(Universidad Nacional Experimental Rafael Maria Baralt, 2025-09-01)To analyze the importance of the locus of innovation and resource-based knowledge management as a variable to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals among small and medium-sized enterprises. The paper tries to open a debate about thinking from situation and its real dynamics, in order to understand social responsibility efficiency. Literature is reviewed from different sources and experiences. We concluded that there is little written on this subject, while it is necessary to help a general narrative for enterprises who want to address innovation competences to social responsibility from a different point of depart. For this it is proposed to understand tools for prospecting complexity in the situation level, outside the organization.1
