Item type:Publication, Sexual Stratification and Sexual Agency Among Low-Income Girls in an Andean City(Oxford University Press, 2020-06-08)Abstract This article analyzes the results of ethnographic research into the ways in which sexuality and social hierarchies and inequalities interact in the experiences of low-income female youth who participated in a sexual and reproductive rights project in poor neighborhoods in Ayacucho, Peru. Following Gayle Rubin, it studies sexuality as a structure that organizes relationships with their own particularities and forms of oppression, a structure that in turn interacts with those of gender, age, social class, and ethnicity. The study also explores forms of gender agency, as well as female teenagers’ cultural logics related to sexual risks and sexual rights. It follows conceptual orientations of practice theory, seeking to contribute to discussions of female youth agency. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Peruvian Catholic Church:(Universidad de Murcia, 2020-12-27)This paper examines the Peruvian Catholic Church's responses to the challenges of COVID-19, and how this context might constitute a new stage of the Peruvian Church’s reception of Vatican II. First, it values that the Catholic Church has performed a significant social contribution by distributing humanitarian aid, providing spiritual accompaniment, and articulating the civil society to face the needs raised by COVID-19. This paper argues that such response relates to the process of reception of Vatican II in Peru. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Peruvian Church developed pastoral structures and ecclesial networks that specialized in engaging with and serving the world. Nowadays, the Church offers those strengths to the State and society. Second, this paper examines how the pandemic presents opportunities for a new discernment of the "signs of the times" by highlighting some pastoral challenges the Peruvian Church needs to address in light of Peru’s new social reality and Pope Francis’ call for Church reform. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Regional development in Amazonas, Peru: science-society interactions for sustainability(SAGE Publishing, 2020-09-16)Scientific-technological knowledge maintains the anthropocentric power-pattern and exploitive attitude with regard to nature, but sustainability science asks for an integration of territorial and decontextualized knowledge systems. Visual participatory methodologies involving diverse local stakeholder facilitate dialogue on environmental and sustainability issues. Inspired by visual ethnography and mediated discourse analysis, the present article uses semiological analysis to reconstruct the depicted narratives on the nature-society system in drawings representing “regional development”. The drawings were elaborated in a series of participatory workshops involving university faculty and students, regional government and non-governmental organizations and farmers from local communities in the northern Amazonian region of Peru. The analysis reveals a prevailing anthropo and technology centered, “colonial” conception of the nature-society system, and a marginalization of alternative narratives. Beyond confirming the potential for visual participatory methods to enhance multi-stakeholder dialogue, it demonstrates how semiological analysis can be used to deepen an understanding of the cultural, organizational and technological constraints facing critical, trans-disciplinary efforts to decolonize the technology-centered, anthropocentric mainstream worldview of nature and society. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The epistemic foundations of injustice: lessons from the Young Marx(Springer Nature, 2021-12-01)This article intends to show to what extent the early Marxian categories of alienation, ideology and proletariat can serve to better understand current forms of epistemic injustice, as well as, conversely, how the latter can illuminate some unclear aspects of such concepts. In the first part, it will be explained the extent to which Marx’s concept of alienation accounts for the experience of an individual in a world to whose norms she is subject, but which she cannot recognise as her own. It will be shown that Marx finds the answer in a form of emancipatory praxis linked to a transformative appropriation of social reality. In order to deepen the understanding of this idea of emancipation, the second part will analyse the Marxian concept of the proletariat. It will be argued that taking up some considerations about the Hegelian figure of the rabble, Marx distinguishes a “liberal” from a “human” form of emancipation. In the third part, a contemporary example will be used to show the usefulness of the young Marx’s analyses concerning this dimension of emancipation struggles. In the fourth part, these ideas will be developed further through the concept of epistemic injustice, which has gained great importance in the recent studies that Critical Theory carries out of the different socio-epistemic blocks of an ideological nature that prevent articulating, communicating and overcoming negative experiences that hinder individual self-realisation. In this sense, it will be shown the importance of the Marxian categories of alienation and ideology to theoretically address current forms of epistemic injustice, and, in relation to this, it will be explained the transformative and constitutive function of the excluded in the creation of new sectors of reality through which their demands can be met. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Exploring the nonaffiliated in South America(Oxford University Press, 2021-06-01)This work explores the phenomenon of the “nonaffiliated” in Latin America and presents partial results of a qualitative research project that included in-depth interviews with fifty-eight nonaffiliated in Cordoba (Argentina), Lima (Peru), and Montevideo (Uruguay). After analyzing the main differences between nonbelievers and believers who have no religious affiliation, we propose a typology for understanding these two groups, which display great diversity within themselves while adopting characteristics of the cultures of their own countries. Three large groups are identified: atheists, nonconfessional, and indifferent. Among the atheists, we find two emphases: militant and indifferent. Among the nonconfessional believers, three groups are identified: those who engage in individual practices related to transcendence, those who engage in collective practices, and those who abandoned Christianity yet express their religiosity in the same keys. The indifferent are those to whom religion deserves no attention. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
