Application of piecewise linear approximation method for the estimation of origin-destination matrix
    (Science and Information Organization, 2020-01-01)
This paper presents a Mixed-Integer Programming Model for the urban freight transport planning problem through the estimation of the Origin-Destination Matrix. The Origin-Destination Matrix is used to know the pattern of travel or vehicle flow between different zones of a city and is estimated from the counting of vehicles on the routes of a road network. For the estimation of the Origin-Destination Matrix, the Entropy Maximization approach is applied. This approach is based on a non-linear optimization model. In order to overcome this difficulty, an optimization model based on the Piecewise Linear Approximation Method is proposed. To test the proposed model, an instance was built based on a road network of a real case. The proposed model obtained good results in a reduced computational time, demonstrating its usefulness for the urban freight transport planning.

An introduction to data envelopment analysis
    (Springer Science+Business Media, 2021-12-11)
Following the seminal work of Farrell (1957), Charnes et al. (1978) introduced DEA as a deterministic and nonparametric efficiency evaluation tool. DEA is a linear programming-based technique that has been widely accepted as a competing methodology to evaluate the relative efficiency of entities or decision-making units, DMUs (Charles et al., 2016, 2018; Tsolas et al., 2020). DEA is a data-oriented technique (Zhu, 2020) that is used to construct an empirical production frontier to measure efficiency. Note that the original DEA program of Charnes et al. (1978) is based on the CRS specification of technology and is used to measure the technical and scale efficiency of DMUs. However, Banker et al. (1984) extended this program to the case of VRS to estimate purely technical efficiency. Over the past three decades, DEA has been widely used to evaluate the relative efficiency of production firms, the nature of the returns-to-scale, and the productivity changes. The DEA literature has seen a wide variety of applications across a plethora of domains, having become a powerful management science tool (Charles et al., 2018). In this chapter, we briefly review the fundamental concepts in DEA, along with the basic technologies and programs.

Hybrid fuzzy MCDM and FMEA integrating with linear programming approach for the health and safety executive risks: a case study
    (Emerald, 2021-03-01)
The of this study is to present a new failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) approach based on fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods and multi-objective programming model for risk assessment in the planning phase of the oil and gas construction projects (OGCP) in Iran. Design/methodology/approach This research contains multiple steps. First, 19 major potential health and safety executive (HSE) risks in OGCP were classified into six categories with the Delphi method. These factors were distinguished by the review of project documentation, checklist analysis and consulting with experts. Then, using the fuzzy SWARA method, the authors calculated the weights of major HSE risks. Subsequently, FMEA and PROMETHEE approaches were used to identify the priority of main risk factors. Eventually, a binary multi-objective linear programming approach was developed to select the risk response strategies, and an augmented e-constraint method (AECM) was used. Findings Regarding the project triple well-known constraints of time, cost and quality, which organizations usually confront, the HSE risks of OGCP were identified and prioritized. Also, the appropriate risk response strategies were also suggested to the managers to be adopted regarding the situations. Originality/value The present research points at the HSE risks’ assessment integrating the fuzzy FMEA, step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis and PROMETHEE techniques with the AECM. Further to the authors’ knowledge, the quantitative assessment of the HSE risks of OGCP has not been done using the combination of the fuzzy FMEA, MCDM and AECMs.

Analytics under uncertainty: a novel method for solving linear programming problems with trapezoidal fuzzy variables
    (Springer Science+Business Media, 2021-11-23)
Linear programming (LP) has long proved its merit as the most flexible and most widely used technique for resource allocation problems in various fields. To solve an LP problem, we have traditionally considered crisp values for the parameters, which are unrealistic in real-world decision-making under uncertainty. The fuzzy set theory has been used to model the imprecise parameter values in LP problems to overcome this shortcoming, resulting in a fuzzy LP (FLP) problem. This paper proposes a new method for solving fuzzy variable linear programming (FVLP) problems in which the decision variables and resource vectors are fuzzy numbers. We show how to use the standard simplex algorithm to solve this problem by converting the fuzzy problem into a crisp one once a linear ranking function is chosen. The novelty of the proposed model resides in that it requires less effort on fuzzy computations as opposed to the existing fuzzy methods. Furthermore, to solve the FVLP problem using the existing methods, fuzzy arithmetic operations and the solution to fuzzy systems of equations are required. By contrast, only arithmetic operations of real numbers and the solution to crisp systems of equations are required to solve the same problem with the method proposed in this study. Finally, a transportation case study in the coal industry is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed algorithm.

Optimization model to consolidate the hose load in a Peruvian agribusiness
    (Springer, 2022-01-01)
Transportation represents around 30% of the total cost of a product. Therefore, the distribution of the load and the route must be optimized and chosen correctly, respectively. The present investigation addresses the optimization of the hose load in 40-foot containers by using mathematical optimization.
