Item type:Publication, Digital Nudges for Privacy Awareness: From consent to informed consent?(Association for Information Systems, 2020-01-01)Maintaining a private life in our digital world is gradually becoming harder. With Internet services having ever increasing access to personal data, it is crucial to raise user awareness about what privacy guarantees they offer. Regulations have recently been enacted such as the European General Data Privacy Regulation (GDPR). Yet, online service providers still have terms and privacy policies to which users tend to agree without ever viewing or reading them. By using digital nudges, this paper explores how small changes in the choice architecture can be designed to increase the informed consent and privacy awareness of users. The results from a double-blind online experiment (n = 183) show that phrasing the agreement differently and providing a highlights alternative to the existing quick-join choice architecture can significantly increase the number of users who view and read the terms and privacy policy. However, these digital nudges seem to not increase the users’ recollection of what they have agreed to. The experimental results are complemented by a field test using one of the proposed designs in the IKEA Place app (n = 81’431).1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Ethical standards for research involving persons with mental disabilities pursuant to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: A proposal(Pan American Health Organization, 2024-01-01)International ethical standards for research involving persons who have diminished decision-making capacity allow for delegation of the decision to participate in research to a representative who can act as a surrogate decision-maker. However, this approach has been questioned by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), according to which all persons with disabilities, regardless of their mental or neurological condition, always have universal legal capacity to make decisions. The incompatibility between ethical standards and the CRPD is clear and impacts the conduct of research involving people with mental disabilities, which is essential for the improvement of their health and well-being. This article advances a proposal that seeks to reconcile the CRPD with ethical standards for informed consent processes in research and provides practical recommendations, especially for Latin American countries that still face challenges in implementing the CRPD in the research field. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
