    Removal of heavy metals using a wetland batch system with Carrizo (Phragmites Australis)
    (Research Square, 2020-11-09)
    Abstract One of the greatest environmental issues related to the development of the mining activity is the generation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). This effluent generated by active and abandoned mines in Peru produces multiple discussions about the role of the industry for a sustainable development. Many methods have been developed for AMD treatment, being wetlands a good option for heavy metal removal. In this sense, removal of heavy metal by using laboratory constructed wetlands with Phragmites Australis was studied. During a 9-day period the variation of different physicochemical parameters and heavy metals concentrations was recorded. The pH decreased to a constant value of 8.24 after the sixth day. The electrical conductivity presented a slight variation from 1 to 1.33 µS cm-1 on the ninth day. Moreover, fluctuating values of Dissolved Oxygen and Turbidity were observed. A reduction between 69% and 93% of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) was registered. Cu concentration was reduced in 68% and 87%; Zn concentrations dropped in 53% and 95%; and Pb was reduced in 20% and 55%. It was concluded that Phragmites Australis can be an alternative in the treatment of the contaminants produced by AMD.

    Biosorción de plomo (II) en solución acuosa con biomasa de los cladodios de la tuna (Opuntia ficus indica)
    (Universidad Nacional de Colombia::will be referenced::ROR-ID, 2020-01-01)
    Se investigó la remoción de plomo de soluciones acuosas por biomasa de los cladodios de la tuna (BCT), una especie abundante en la sierra peruana. Las propiedades físicas y químicas de la BCT se determinaron por técnicas de FTIR y SEM/EDX. El análisis FTIR confirmó la presencia de grupos –OH, CO–C, C=O y –NH2, los cuales interactuarían con el metal. La micrografía SEM reveló que la morfología superficial de la BCT tiene porosidad adecuada para la biosorción. En un sistema discontinuo se obtuvo la más alta capacidad de biosorción (qe) con una relación masa BCT/volumen de 4 g/L, pH 4,5 y tiempo de contacto de 1 h. La biosorción siguió un modelo cinético de pseudo-segundo orden y el proceso de difusión intraparticular fue el factor principal de control de la velocidad. Los datos en el equilibrio fueron correlacionados con cinco modelos (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, D-R y Redlich-Peterson) y se ajustaron mejor al modelo de Langmuir, lo que indica que el proceso se realiza en centros activos energéticamente homogéneos, el valor de qe máxima fue 50,25 mg/g. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que la BCT puede ser usada como biosorbente eficiente para el tratamiento de aguas contaminadas con Pb (II).

    Removal of heavy metals using a wetland batch system with carrizo (Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud.): a laboratory assessment

    Assessment and analysis of soil quality in an industrial zone from Lima, Peru using the grey clustering method
    (IJETAE Publication House, 2022-09-01)
    Within the district of Ventanilla there are many lead smelting companies, which emit gases containing heavy metals that, when transported to human settlements, could be causing damage to the health of the population, mostly harming young children. At present, the evaluation of soil quality involves the monitoring of various indicators that are analysed independently, leaving aside the systemic approach in which the elements interact and often restrict each other, making the analysis very complex. In this sense, a superior analysis system is proposed based on the Grey Clustering method, which is based on the theory of grey systems, an artificial intelligence approach that allows for an integral evaluation and takes into account the high degree of uncertainty present in the environment. The proposed methodology was used for the study of soil quality in the industrial park of the district of Ventanilla - Mi Perú, specifically in 3 Areas of Potential Interest (API): "Mercado Virgen de Guadalupe", "Patio de La I.E.P. Arturo Padilla Espinoza" and "AA.HH. Las Casuarinas". The results of the evaluation of soil quality using the Grey Clustering method showed that 40% of the total number of monitoring points have very poor soil quality, with the Virgen de Guadalupe Market area having 75% of the monitoring points with very poor soil quality. Finally, the present study can be of great use to the competent authorities related to the surveillance and monitoring of soil quality, as well as the health of the nearby population in order to make decisions on the control of nearby industrial activities.
