Item type:Publication, Measurement of beauty production via non-prompt D0 mesons in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022-12-01)A bstract The production of non-prompt D 0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays was measured at midrapidity (| y | < 0 . 5) in Pb-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{{\textrm{s}}_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. Their nuclear modification factor ( R AA ), measured for the first time down to p T = 1 GeV /c in the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes, indicates a significant suppression, up to a factor of about three, for p T > 5 GeV /c in the 0–10% central Pb-Pb collisions. The data are described by models that include both collisional and radiative processes in the calculation of beauty-quark energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma, and quark recombination in addition to fragmentation as a hadronisation mechanism. The ratio of the non-prompt to prompt D 0 -meson R AA is larger than unity for p T > 4 GeV /c in the 0–10% central Pb-Pb collisions, as predicted by models in which beauty quarks lose less energy than charm quarks in the quark-gluon plasma because of their larger mass. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Measurements of the groomed and ungroomed jet angularities in pp collisions at √s = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022-05-01)A bstract The jet angularities are a class of jet substructure observables which characterize the angular and momentum distribution of particles within jets. These observables are sensitive to momentum scales ranging from perturbative hard scatterings to nonperturbative fragmentation into final-state hadrons. We report measurements of several groomed and ungroomed jet angularities in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5 . 02 TeV with the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed using charged particle tracks at midrapidity ( |η| < 0 . 9). The anti- k T algorithm is used with jet resolution parameters R = 0 . 2 and R = 0 . 4 for several transverse momentum $$ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{ch}} $$ p T ch jet intervals in the 20–100 GeV/ c range. Using the jet grooming algorithm Soft Drop, the sensitivity to softer, wide-angle processes, as well as the underlying event, can be reduced in a way which is well-controlled in theoretical calculations. We report the ungroomed jet angularities, λ α , and groomed jet angularities, λ α ,g , to investigate the interplay between perturbative and nonperturbative effects at low jet momenta. Various angular exponent parameters α = 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 are used to systematically vary the sensitivity of the observable to collinear and soft radiation. Results are compared to analytical predictions at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy, which provide a generally good description of the data in the perturbative regime but exhibit discrepancies in the nonperturbative regime. Moreover, these measurements serve as a baseline for future ones in heavy-ion collisions by providing new insight into the interplay between perturbative and nonperturbative effects in the angular and momentum substructure of jets. They supply crucial guidance on the selection of jet resolution parameter, jet transverse momentum, and angular scaling variable for jet quenching studies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Inclusive, prompt and non-prompt J/ψ production at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022-06-01)A measurement of inclusive, prompt, and non-prompt J/ψ production in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5.02 TeV is presented. The inclusive J/ψ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at midrapidity down to a transverse momentum pT = 0. The inclusive J/ψ nuclear modification factor RpPb is calculated by comparing the new results in p-Pb collisions to a recently measured proton-proton reference at the same centre-of-mass energy. Non-prompt J/ψ mesons, which originate from the decay of beauty hadrons, are separated from promptly produced J/ψ on a statistical basis for pT larger than 1.0 GeV/c. These results are based on the data sample collected by the ALICE detector during the 2016 LHC p-Pb run, corresponding to an integrated luminosity $$ \mathcal{L} $$ L int = 292 ± 11 μb−1, which is six times larger than the previous publications. The total uncertainty on the pT-integrated inclusive J/ψ and non-prompt J/ψ cross section are reduced by a factor 1.7 and 2.2, respectively. The measured cross sections and RpPb are compared with theoretical models that include various combinations of cold nuclear matter effects. From the non-prompt J/ψ production cross section, the $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ b b ¯ production cross section at midrapidity, $$ {\mathrm{d}\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ d σ b b ¯ /dy, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, $$ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $$ σ b b ¯ , are derived. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Study of very forward energy and its correlation with particle production at midrapidity in pp and p-Pb collisions at the LHC(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022-08-01)The energy deposited at very forward rapidities (very forward energy) is a powerful tool for characterising proton fragmentation in pp and p-Pb collisions. The correlation of very forward energy with particle production at midrapidity provides direct insights into the initial stages and the subsequent evolution of the collision. Furthermore, the correlation with the production of particles with large transverse momenta at midrapidity provides information complementary to the measurements of the underlying event, which are usually interpreted in the framework of models implementing centrality-dependent multiple parton interactions. Results about very forward energy, measured by the ALICE zero degree calorimeters (ZDCs), and its dependence on the activity measured at midrapidity in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8.16 TeV are discussed. The measurements performed in pp collisions are compared with the expectations of three hadronic interaction event generators: PYTHIA 6 (Perugia 2011 tune), PYTHIA 8 (Monash tune), and EPOS LHC. These results provide new constraints on the validity of models in describing the beam remnants at very forward rapidities, where perturbative QCD cannot be used. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Measurement of beauty production via non-prompt charm hadrons in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024-11-01)The production cross sections of D0, D+, and Λc+ hadrons originating from beauty-hadron decays (i.e. non-prompt) were measured for the first time at midrapidity in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN = 5.02 TeV. Nuclear modification factors (RpPb) of non-prompt D0, D+, and Λc+ are calculated as a function of the transverse momentum (pT) to investigate the modification of the momentum spectra measured in p–Pb collisions with respect to those measured in proton–proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. The RpPb measurements are compatible with unity and with the measurements in the prompt charm sector, and do not show a significant pT dependence. The pT-integrated cross sections and pT-integrated RpPb of non-prompt D0 and D+ mesons are also computed by extrapolating the visible cross sections down to pT = 0. The non-prompt D-meson RpPb integrated over pT is compatible with unity and with model calculations implementing modification of the parton distribution functions of nucleons bound in nuclei with respect to free nucleons. The non-prompt Λc+/D0 and D+/D0 production ratios are computed to investigate hadronisation mechanisms of beauty quarks into mesons and baryons. The measured ratios as a function of pT display a similar trend to that measured for charm hadrons in the same collision system. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Azimuthal anisotropy of jet particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024-08-01)The azimuthal anisotropy of particles associated with jets (jet particles) at midrapidity is measured for the first time in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV down to transverse momentum (pT) of 0.5 GeV/c and 2 GeV/c, respectively, with ALICE. The results obtained in p-Pb collisions are based on a novel three-particle correlation technique. The azimuthal anisotropy coefficient v2 in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions is positive, with a significance reaching 6.8σ at low pT, and its magnitude is smaller than in semicentral Pb-Pb collisions. In contrast to the measurements in Pb-Pb collisions, the v2 coefficient is also found independent of pT within uncertainties. Comparisons with the inclusive charged-particle v2 and with AMPT calculations are discussed. The predictions suggest that parton interactions play an important role in generating a non-zero jet-particle v2 in p-Pb collisions, even though they overestimate the reported measurement. These observations shed new insights on the understanding of the origin of the collective behaviour of jet particles in small systems such as p-Pb collisions, and provide significant stringent new constraints to models. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Measurements of long-range two-particle correlation over a wide pseudorapidity range in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024-01-01)Correlations in azimuthal angle extending over a long range in pseudorapidity between particles, usually called the “ridge” phenomenon, were discovered in heavy-ion collisions, and later found in pp and p–Pb collisions. In large systems, they are thought to arise from the expansion (collective flow) of the produced particles. Extending these measurements over a wider range in pseudorapidity and final-state particle multiplicity is important to understand better the origin of these long-range correlations in small collision systems. In this Letter, measurements of the long-range correlations in p–Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV are extended to a pseudorapidity gap of ∆η ~ 8 between particles using the ALICE forward multiplicity detectors. After suppressing non-flow correlations, e.g., from jet and resonance decays, the ridge structure is observed to persist up to a very large gap of ∆η ~ 8 for the first time in p–Pb collisions. This shows that the collective flow-like correlations extend over an extensive pseudorapidity range also in small collision systems such as p–Pb collisions. The pseudorapidity dependence of the second-order anisotropic flow coefficient, v2(η), is extracted from the long-range correlations. The v2(η) results are presented for a wide pseudorapidity range of –3.1 < η < 4.8 in various centrality classes in p–Pb collisions. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the source of anisotropic flow in small collision systems, the v2(η) measurements are compared with hydrodynamic and transport model calculations. The comparison suggests that the final-state interactions play a dominant role in developing the anisotropic flow in small collision systems. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Prompt and non-prompt J/ψ production at midrapidity in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024-02-01)The transverse momentum (pT) and centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factor RAA of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ, the latter originating from the weak decays of beauty hadrons, have been measured by the ALICE collaboration in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV. The measurements are carried out through the e+e− decay channel at midrapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the transverse momentum region 1.5 < pT < 10 GeV/c. Both prompt and non-prompt J/ψ measurements indicate a significant suppression for pT > 5 GeV/c, which becomes stronger with increasing collision centrality. The results are consistent with similar LHC measurements in the overlapping pT intervals, and cover the kinematic region down to pT = 1.5 GeV/c at midrapidity, not accessible by other LHC experiments. The suppression of prompt J/ψ in central and semicentral collisions exhibits a decreasing trend towards lower transverse momentum, described within uncertainties by models implementing J/ψ production from recombination of c and c¯ quarks produced independently in different partonic scatterings. At high transverse momentum, transport models including quarkonium dissociation are able to describe the suppression for prompt J/ψ. For non-prompt J/ψ, the suppression predicted by models including both collisional and radiative processes for the computation of the beauty-quark energy loss inside the quark-gluon plasma is consistent with measurements within uncertainties. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, W±-Boson Production in p–Pb Collisions at √sNN = 8.16 TeV and Pb–Pb Collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2023-05-01)The production of the W± bosons measured in p–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision sNN = 8.16 TeV and Pb–Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV with ALICE at the LHC is presented. The W± bosons are measured via their muonic decay channel, with the muon reconstructed in the pseudorapidity region −4 < ηlabμ < −2.5 with transverse momentum pTμ > 10 GeV/c. While in Pb–Pb collisions the measurements are performed in the forward (2.5 < ycmsμ < 4) rapidity region, in p–Pb collisions, where the centre-of-mass frame is boosted with respect to the laboratory frame, the measurements are performed in the backward (−4.46 < ycmsμ < −2.96) and forward (2.03 < ycmsμ < 3.53) rapidity regions. The W− and W+ production cross sections, lepton-charge asymmetry, and nuclear modification factors are evaluated as a function of the muon rapidity. In order to study the production as a function of the p–Pb collision centrality, the production cross sections of the W− and W+ bosons are combined and normalised to the average number of binary nucleon–nucleon collision 〈N coll〉. In Pb–Pb collisions, the same measurements are presented as a function of the collision centrality. Study of the binary scaling of the W±-boson cross sections in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions is also reported. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations, with and without nuclear modifications of the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs), as well as with available data at the LHC. Significant deviations from the theory expectations are found in the two collision systems, indicating that the measurements can provide additional constraints for the determination of nuclear PDFs and in particular of the light-quark distributions. Item type:Publication, Probing the Chiral Magnetic Wave with Charge-Dependent Flow Measurements in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2023-12-01)The Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) phenomenon is essential to provide insights into the strong interaction in QCD, the properties of the quark-gluon plasma, and the topological characteristics of the early universe, offering a deeper understanding of fundamental physics in high-energy collisions. Measurements of the charge-dependent anisotropic flow coefficients are studied in Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN = 5.02 TeV to probe the CMW. In particular, the slope of the normalized difference in elliptic (v2) and triangular (v3) flow coefficients of positively and negatively charged particles as a function of their event-wise normalized number difference, is reported for inclusive and identified particles. The slope r3Norm is found to be larger than zero and to have a magnitude similar to r2Norm, thus pointing to a large background contribution for these measurements. Furthermore, r2Norm can be described by a blast wave model calculation that incorporates local charge conservation. In addition, using the event shape engineering technique yields a fraction of CMW (fCMW) contribution to this measurement which is compatible with zero. This measurement provides the very first upper limit for fCMW, and in the 10–60% centrality interval it is found to be 26% (38%) at 95% (99.7%) confidence level.
