Exploring the relationship between KIBS co-locations and the innovativeness of manufacturing firms in Latin America
(Asociacion Espanola de Ciencia Regional, 2020-01-01)
The literature provides empirical evidence on the importance of geographic location for an effective provision of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS). According to the postulates of territorial servitization, KIBS are also fundamental for the development of manufacturing firms. Despite this, KIBS can be an important source of innovation. In Latin America there is still little attention paid to KIBS, both from academia and from policy makers. The purpose of this research is to analyse the relationship between KIBS co-locations and the innovativeness of the manufacturing firms in context of emerging countries. Drawing on the World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) for Latin-American countries, authors analysed 3,029 manufacturing firms using the OLS method. Findings indicated that manufacturing firms’ locations based on KIBS proximity, is a critical determinant of innovativeness. This relationship is considerably stronger in Central American countries, while in South America this relationship is negative, which leads to debate.

Changes in spatial inequality and residential segregation in metropolitan Lima
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021-01-01)
Since the 2000s, Lima city shows important changes in its socio-spatial structure, decreasing the long-established opposition between the centre and the periphery, developing a more complex arrangement. Sustained national economic growth has allowed better socio-economic conditions in different areas of the city. However, high inequality still remains in the ways of production of urban space, which affects residential segregation. To identify possible changes in the segregation patterns of Metropolitan Lima, this study focuses on the spatial patterns of occupational groups, examining their causes and relation with income inequality. The analysis is based on the 1993 and 2007 census data, measuring residential segregation by the Dissimilarity Index, comparing with the Diversity Index. The results confirm trends towards increased segregation between occupational groups. Top occupational groups are concentrated in central areas, expanding into adjacent districts. Bottom occupational groups are over-represented in distant neighbourhoods. In-between, a new, more mixed, transitional zone has emerged in upgraded formerly low-income neighbourhoods. Areas of lower occupational diversity coincide with extreme income values, forming spaces of greater segregation. In the metropolitan centre–periphery pattern, the centre has expanded, while the periphery has been shifted to outer peripheral rings.

Perspectives on short break destinations and their contribution to local-regional economic development: a literature review
    (University of Talca, 2022-12-01)
Globalization and changing lifestyles are generating new forms of tourism, including visits to short break destinations. The objective of this study is to propose a definition of short break destinations and to present the dimensions of the attractiveness of tourist destinations. The methodology consisted of reviewing the literature of 64 academic publications. The result shows the determinants that should be considered in the definition of short break destination and the following dimension are proposed: 1) naturals resources, 2) cultural and historical resources, 3) social factors, 4) tourist services and 5) infrastructure.

The Policy Making on Venezuelan Migratory Policies in Peru 2017-2022: Processes, Bifurcation Points and Drivers
(Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid, 2026-01-01)
This study examines Peruvian public policies on Venezuelan migration, identifying factors influencing their formulation and implementation while uncovering their behavioral patterns. Using a qualitative approach based on process tracing and thematic analysis of official documents, media narratives, and statistical data, the research identifies three phases of migration policy: (1) open-door policies, (2) securitization and restriction, and (3) invisibilization and normalization of irregular migration. These phases reveal a disconnect between political rhetoric and practical outcomes, with calculated tolerance for policy non-enforcement and migrant integration delegated to civil society and international organizations. The findings highlight incoherent migration policies marked by legal non-compliance, omission as a strategy, and limited state intervention. These dynamics are driven by advocacy coalitions excluded from decision-making, strained executive-legislative relations, and media-influenced public opinion. The study's originality lies in its innovative combination of process tracing and thematic analysis to explain policy dynamics in contexts of institutional fragility.

The challenges of inclusive innovation: three case studies from Peru
    (Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2026-01-01)
In Peru, very few studies have examined inclusion in innovation processes. Under the inclusive innovation approach, the aim of this article is to examine how collaborative decision-making, collective learning and network building contribute to a meaningful involvement of rural communities in innovation processes. We present three case studies of communities in the region of Cusco, Peru that were users of a new energy system that was developed by a university. The findings of this study reveal that limiting the participation of rural communities in key decisions, validating only the scientific knowledge and establishing no connections with other stakeholders, are arrangements that perpetuate the subordinated position of excluded groups. We discuss the importance of evidencing and questioning those institutional arrangements that sustain the inequalities that are meant to be addressed.
