Item type:Publication, Empowering resilience: navigating challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in Taiwan amidst COVID-19(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2026-06-23)This study investigates the challenges faced by Taiwanese women entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their emotional responses and the strategies they employed to cope with these challenges. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through structured interviews with 50 women entrepreneurs and analyzed using thematic analysis, framed by social cognitive theory and the resource-based view. Findings Seven major challenges were identified: financial instability, government policies and restrictions, disruptions to business operations, supply chain disruptions, communication issues with clients, difficulties in complying with health and safety measures and workforce disruption. The emotional responses ranged from feelings of helplessness and frustration to resilience and hope, which in turn informed the adoption of various adaptive strategies. Research limitations/implications The small sample size of 50 participants limits the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, qualitative research relies on the researchers' interpretation of data, which may introduce subjectivity and bias. Practical implications The lessons learned from women entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the resilience, adaptability and innovative strategies employed by women entrepreneurs during challenging times. Originality/value The findings highlight the resilience and innovative capabilities of women entrepreneurs in crisis contexts and underscore the need for tailored support mechanisms, including financial assistance, digital literacy training and mental health resources. Policy recommendations emphasize the importance of gender-sensitive policies and simplified regulatory procedures. The findings also contribute to advancing scholarship on gender equality (SDG 5) and decent work and economic growth (SDG 8). - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Analysis of the digital competencies of regional micro and small enterprises (MSEs)(Springer Nature, 2026-12-01)Digital transformation is crucial for the sustainability and competitiveness of micro and small enterprises (MSEs). This study assessed the level of digital competencies of 119 regional MSEs using the DigComp 2.1 framework. Fifty-four percent of enterprises achieved an advanced level in digital communication and collaboration, and 47.9% in digital literacy. In contrast, only 25.2% achieved this level in content creation, and 24.4% in digital privacy and security. Ordinal regression analysis revealed that formal education (odds ratios OR = 11.6), digital communication and collaboration (OR = 4.7 × 105), and digital privacy and security (OR = 2.3 × 105) significantly increase the likelihood of advanced digital competencies. Although MSEs have made progress in integrating digital technologies, it is essential to strengthen training programs and support policies to close the identified gaps. The main limitation of this study is its non-probabilistic sampling in a single region, which restricts the generalization of the findings. Although the study focuses on a single region, the results provide a valuable and representative view of digital competencies. Future research should expand geographical coverage and use longitudinal designs to strengthen the generalization and analysis of the evolution of digital competencies over time.1
