Item type:Publication, Ionospheric echo detection in digital ionograms using convolutional neural networks(Wiley, 2021-08-01)An ionogram is a graph of the time that a vertically transmitted wave takes to return to the earth as a function of frequency. Time is typically represented as virtual height, which is the time divided by the speed of light. The ionogram is shaped by making a trace of this height against the frequency of the transmitted wave. Along with the echoes of the ionosphere, ionograms usually contain a large amount of noise and interference of different nature that must be removed in order to extract useful information. In the present work, we propose a method based on convolutional neural networks to extract ionospheric echoes from digital ionograms. Extraction using the CNN model is compared with extraction using machine learning techniques. From the extracted traces, ionospheric parameters can be determined and electron density profile can be derived. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Multi-view data augmentation to improve wound segmentation on 3D surface model by deep learning(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021-01-01)Wound area segmentation really progressed with the emergence of deep learning, due to its robustness in uncontrolled lighting and no need to design hand-crafted features but two limits have still to be overcome: firstly, its performance relies on the size and quality of the training dataset in the medical field, where data annotation is costly and time-consuming; secondly the accuracy of the segmentation depends highly on the camera distance and angle and moreover perspective effects prevent measuring real surfaces in single views. To address concurrently these two issues, we propose to apply multi-view modeling: an image sequence is acquired around the wound site and enables wound 3D reconstruction. Then, a segmentation step is run to extract roughly the wound from the background in each view and to select the best view with an original strategy. This view provides the most accurate segmentation and the real wound bed area even on non planar wounds. Finally, this segmentation is backprojected in each view to generate a complete set of well annotated real images to reinforce the learning step of the neural network. In our experiments, we compare several strategies to select the best view in the image sequence. The proposed method, tested on a dataset of 270 images, outperforms standard deep learning approach based on a single view, as recorded with DICE index and IoU score which rise respectively from 36.53% to 86.3% and 29.48% to 77.09% for the wound class to achieve an overall DICE and IoU score of 93.04% and 86.61% including background class. These results attest to the robustness of our method and its improved accuracy in the wound segmentation task. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Light-field imaging reconstruction using deep learning enabling intelligent autonomous transportation system(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2021-05-27)Light-field (LF) cameras, also known as plenoptic cameras, permit the recording of the 4D LF distribution of target scenes. However, many times, surface errors of a microlens array (MLA) are responsible for degradation in the images captured by a plenoptic camera. Additionally, the limited pixel count of the sensor can cause missing parallax information. The aforementioned issues are crucial for creating accurate maps for Intelligent Autonomous Transport System (IATS), because they cause loss of LF information, and need to be addressed. To tackle this problem, a learning-based framework by directly simulating the LF distribution is proposed. A high-dimensional convolution layer with densely sampled LFs in 4D space and considering a soft activation function based on ReLU segmentation correction is used to generate a superresolution (SR) LF image, improving the convergence rate in the deep learning network. Experimental results show that our proposed LF image reconstruction framework outperforms the existing state-of-the-art approaches; specifically, it is effective for learning the LF distribution and generating high-quality LF images. Different image quality assessment methods are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed framework, such as PSNR, SSIM, IWSSIM, FSIM, GFM, MDFM, and HDR-VDP. Additionally, the computational efficiency was evaluated in terms of number of parameters and FLOPs, and experimental results demonstrated that our proposed framework reached the highest performance in most of the datasets used. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Light field image quality enhancement by a lightweight deformable deep learning framework for intelligent transportation systems(MDPI AG, 2021-05-02)Light field (LF) imaging has multi-view properties that help to create many applications that include auto-refocusing, depth estimation and 3D reconstruction of images, which are required particularly for intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). However, cameras can present a limited angular resolution, becoming a bottleneck in vision applications. Thus, there is a challenge to incorporate angular data due to disparities in the LF images. In recent years, different machine learning algorithms have been applied to both image processing and ITS research areas for different purposes. In this work, a Lightweight Deformable Deep Learning Framework is implemented, in which the problem of disparity into LF images is treated. To this end, an angular alignment module and a soft activation function into the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) are implemented. For performance assessment, the proposed solution is compared with recent state-of-the-art methods using different LF datasets, each one with specific characteristics. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed solution achieved a better performance than the other methods. The image quality results obtained outperform state-of-the-art LF image reconstruction methods. Furthermore, our model presents a lower computational complexity, decreasing the execution time. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Fault diagnosis via neural ordinary differential equations(MDPI AG, 2021-05-01)Implementation of model-based fault diagnosis systems can be a difficult task due to the complex dynamics of most systems, an appealing alternative to avoiding modeling is to use machine learning-based techniques for which the implementation is more affordable nowadays. However, the latter approach often requires extensive data processing. In this paper, a hybrid approach using recent developments in neural ordinary differential equations is proposed. This approach enables us to combine a natural deep learning technique with an estimated model of the system, making the training simpler and more efficient. For evaluation of this methodology, a nonlinear benchmark system is used by simulation of faults in actuators, sensors, and process. Simulation results show that the proposed methodology requires less processing for the training in comparison with conventional machine learning approaches since the data-set is directly taken from the measurements and inputs. Furthermore, since the model used in the essay is only a structural approximation of the plant; no advanced modeling is required. This approach can also alleviate some pitfalls of training data-series, such as complicated data augmentation methodologies and the necessity for big amounts of data. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, A feature extraction using probabilistic neural network and BTFSC-Net model with deep learning for brain tumor classification(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2022-12-31)BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Brain Tumor Fusion-based Segments and Classification-Non-enhancing tumor (BTFSC-Net) is a hybrid system for classifying brain tumors that combine medical image fusion, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: to reduce noise from medical images, the hybrid probabilistic wiener filter (HPWF) is first applied as a preprocessing step. Then, to combine robust edge analysis (REA) properties in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) medical images, a fusion network based on deep learning convolutional neural networks (DLCNN) is developed. Here, the brain images' slopes and borders are detected using REA. To separate the sick region from the color image, adaptive fuzzy c-means integrated k-means (HFCMIK) clustering is then implemented. To extract hybrid features from the fused image, low-level features based on the redundant discrete wavelet transform (RDWT), empirical color features, and texture characteristics based on the gray-level cooccurrence matrix (GLCM) are also used. Finally, to distinguish between benign and malignant tumors, a deep learning probabilistic neural network (DLPNN) is deployed. RESULTS: according to the findings, the suggested BTFSC-Net model performed better than more traditional preprocessing, fusion, segmentation, and classification techniques. Additionally, 99.21% segmentation accuracy and 99.46% classification accuracy were reached using the proposed BTFSC-Net model. CONCLUSIONS: earlier approaches have not performed as well as our presented method for image fusion, segmentation, feature extraction, classification operations, and brain tumor classification. These results illustrate that the designed approach performed more effectively in terms of enhanced quantitative evaluation with better accuracy as well as visual performance. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Low-dose COVID-19 CT image denoising using batch normalization and convolution neural network(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2022-10-01)Computed tomography (CT) is used in medical applications to produce digital medical imaging of the human body and is acquired by the reconstruction process, where X-rays are the key component of CT imaging. The present coronavirus outbreak has spawned new medical device and technology research fields. COVID-19 most severely affects people with poor immunity; children and pregnant women are more susceptible. A CT scan will be required to assess the infection’s severity. As a result, to reduce the radiation levels significantly there is a need to minimize the CT scan noise. The quality of CT images may degrade in the form of noisy images due to low radiation levels. Hence, this study proposes a novel denoising methodology for COVID-19 CT images with a low dose, where a convolution neural network (CNN) and batch normalization were utilized for denoising. From different output metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and image quality index (IQI), the accuracy of the resulting CT images was checked and evaluated, where IQI obtained the best results in terms of 99% accuracy. The findings were also compared with the outcomes of related recent research in the domain. After a detailed review of the findings, it was noted that the proposed algorithm in the present study performed better in comparision to the existing literature. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Survey of text mining techniques applied to judicial decisions prediction(MDPI, 2022-10-01)This paper reviews the most recent literature on experiments with different Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing techniques applied to predict judicial and administrative decisions. Among the most outstanding findings, we have that the most used data mining techniques are Support Vector Machine (SVM), K Nearest Neighbours (K-NN) and Random Forest (RF), and in terms of the most used deep learning techniques, we found Long-Term Memory (LSTM) and transformers such as BERT. An important finding in the papers reviewed was that the use of machine learning techniques has prevailed over those of deep learning. Regarding the place of origin of the research carried out, we found that 64% of the works belong to studies carried out in English-speaking countries, 8% in Portuguese and 28% in other languages (such as German, Chinese, Turkish, Spanish, etc.). Very few works of this type have been carried out in Spanish-speaking countries. The classification criteria of the works have been based, on the one hand, on the identification of the classifiers used to predict situations (or events with legal interference) or judicial decisions and, on the other hand, on the application of classifiers to the phenomena regulated by the different branches of law: criminal, constitutional, human rights, administrative, intellectual property, family law, tax law and others. The corpus size analyzed in the reviewed works reached 100,000 documents in 2020. Finally, another important finding lies in the accuracy of these predictive techniques, reaching predictions of over 60% in different branches of law. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Global bibliometric mapping of the frontier of knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence for the period 1990–2019(Springer Science+Business Media, 2022-06-08)Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a field of knowledge that is displacing and disrupting technologies, leading to changes in human life. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to scientifically map this topic and its ramifications, in order to analyze its growth. The study was developed under the bibliometric approach and considered the period 1990–2019. The steps followed were (i) Identification and selection of keyword terms in three methodological layers by a panel of experts. (ii) Design and application of an algorithm to identify these selected keywords in titles, abstracts, and keywords using terms in Web of Science to contrast them. (iii) Performing data processing based on the Journals of the Journal Citation Report during 2020. Knowing the evolution of a field of knowledge such as AI from a bibliometric study and subsequently establishing the ramifications of new research streams is in itself a relevant finding. Addressing a broad field of knowledge as AI from a multidisciplinary approach given the convergence it generates with other disciplines and specialties is of high strategic value for decision makers such as governments, academics, scientists, and entrepreneurs.
