This study analyzes through a qualitative study of 4 focus groups (n=13) the meanings and effects of volunteering reported by volunteers of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games and the Special Legacy Project. On a personal level, positive emotions are reported, linked to the awareness of having been part of historic events, as well as experiences of personal and interpersonal growth. From the social point of view, favorable effects are reported for the construction of a sense of community, civic awareness and national pride. In the institutional framework, organizational and management aspects are identified that favor favorable conditions for the development of volunteer experiences that generate positive effects both personally and socially.

    Maniqueísmo, memoria e historia oficial
    (2021-12-28)

Taking stock of corporate social responsibility practices in Peru: the role of internal and external CSR, accountability and citizenship
    (Inderscience Publishers, 2022-01-01)
This paper reviews corporate social responsibility (CSR) and its challenges in four main Peruvian private sectors (agroindustry, construction, mining and manufacturing). Based on the lessons learned, it aims at raising awareness on CSR crucial role in Peru, and responsiveness on sustainable development issues, while providing a roadmap to practitioners to measure CSR compliance. Through a qualitative approach, the question this paper intends to answer is to what extent Peruvian companies comply with internal and external CSR practices along with accountability and citizenship. To answer this question, we selected a purposive sample of private sector Peruvian companies; structured interviews have been conducted to measure and then compare their compliance rate concerning the mentioned CSR dimensions. While still much needs to be improved concerning CSR practices in these Peruvian private sectors, based on our research, citizenship appears to be a critical aspect which needs further attention by companies and policymakers in Peru.

The trail of Gyges. A secular philosophical controversy on the problem of corruption

Women Leaders, Interpreters, Companions: On Participatory Methodologies and Citizenship Building in Peru
    (De Gruyter Mouton, 2023-03-01)
The purpose of this reflection piece is twofold: first, we give an account of the participatory methodology applied in the project "Improving women's lives through the role of social translators in rural Peru". This project, developed between 2018 and 2019, sought to make visible and highlight the role played by community leaders in Puno and Ayacucho, in the Andean south of Peru, as ad hoc interpreters and translators, in benefit of members of their communities, many of them speakers of Quechua or Aymara and Spanish, with different levels of bilingualism. Secondly, based on this experience, we consider the scope of participatory methodologies as a resource for raising awareness of bottom-up citizenship-building processes in South America.

Reclaiming Heritage and Citizenship: Urban Pre-Colonial Cultural Heritage Management and Heritage Grassroots Organizations in Lima, Peru
    (SAGE Publications Ltd, 2023-10-01)
The material-centered cultural heritage management approach does not contemplate ordinary people’s closeness to heritage. Even after colonial relationships ended, colonial conceptions of what constitutes heritage drove national policy choices and state interventions regarding which elements of local history and culture should be valued and preserved and which could be destroyed and abandoned. Government rejection of non-elite populations and their connections to urban heritage resulted in the irrevocable destruction of important sites and traditions. But the rise of what I term heritage grassroots organizations (HGROs) has recently begun to reassert low-income and working-class citizens’ role in the recognition and preservation of heritage. Focusing on the emergence of HGROs in Lima, Peru, this article demonstrates how colonial heritage narratives formed, persisted, and have more recently been challenged by local populations whose daily lives are affected by materialist approaches to heritage. In doing so, these citizens simultaneously claim their rights to the past and to the city.

Processing absence: No-body techniques and the impossibility of mourning among relatives of the disappeared in Ayacucho
    (SAGE Publishing, 2026-02-01)
This article examines how relatives of the disappeared during Peru's internal armed conflict (1980–2000) in Ayacucho process loss without the presence of bodies. It argues that grieving, a ritual process, is disrupted by disappearance, creating a prolonged liminal space. Through ethnographic analysis, this article explores the strategies relatives use to confront disappearance and death in a context of uncertainty, focusing on the impossibility of mourning due to the absence of bodies. I introduce the concept of No-body techniques to describe strategies developed by relatives to make sense of reality and repair broken bonds. These techniques, rooted in individual and collective action, challenge the State and expand its boundaries of citizenship recognition. Ultimately, this article concludes that No-body techniques are integral to the quest for truth and memorialisation, embedded in mourning practices that allow the deceased to persist in the social world even after decades of uncertainty.
