Cultivo de coca y minería ilegal en la Amazonía peruana
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2024-12-02)
This article provides a narrative synthesis of the academic literature on coca cultivation and illegal mining in the Peruvian Amazon. Through secondary sources, it analyzes the expansion of these illicit economies into the eastern Amazon. In addition, the article presents and discusses four myths about illicit economies prevalent in public debate and the media, which prevent an understanding of the complexity behind these phenomena. The myths revolve around i) a full understanding of the extent and distribution of coca cultivation and illegal mining, ii) the existence of a direct relationship between illicit economies and violence, iii) the role of indigenous peoples in the expansion of these activities and, finally, iv) the absence or limited presence of the State in these contexts. Based on a narrative review of the literature, this article uses the findings of recent empirical evidence to question the validity of these myths. The article concludes with research conclusions and recommendations for the study of illicit economies.

Educational Trajectories and Territorial Mobility of Indigenous Youth in the Peruvian Amazon Trayectorias educativas y movilidad territorial de jóvenes indígenas de la Amazonía peruana
    (Ibero - Amerikanisches Institut, 2026-07-23)
This article analyzes the educational trajectories of Amazonian youth of Indigenous origin from a biographical perspective and examines their movement through the territory. The conceptual framework uses life course theory and engages with the 'community cultural wealth' approach (Yosso 2005), which calls for recognizing a set of 'capitals' different from the dominant ones, in order to avoid falling into a deficit-centered perspective. To this model, we add the concept of 'territorial capital', developed from the experiences of mobility and migration. The methodology used is based on biographical interviews conducted remotely due to the health context. We identify high mobility of children and youth between villages, towns, and cities at various stages of their lives, enabling them to develop territorial capital. Likewise, we identify various forms of capital - family, social, aspirational, navigational, and resistance - that contribute to their access to and persistence in higher education.

Jene nete, el mundo de las aguas en la obra de Chonon Bensho: la complementación de los saberes ancestrales y la modernidad
    (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, 2023-07-01)
This article proposes to analyze the world of waters in the plastic and poetic work of the shipibo-konibo artist Chonon Bensho in order to understand how ancestral knowledge and hegemonic modernity complement and dialogue in her aesthetic proposal. For this, two paintings and a poem linked to one of them are analysed, and the artist´s testimonies are taken into account. Thus, the process of re-signification of knowledge and the possibilities for conceiving a modernity that coexists with indigenous knowledge is addressed.

LIQUID SUBSTANCE AND PLANT LIFE: THE AMAZONIAN ECOPOETICS OF JAVIER DÁVILA DURAND

This article discusses the new evangelization and civilization strategy of the Franciscan missionaries for the indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Amazon at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The text describes the historical context of the Peruvian Selva Central region as a frontier region, colonization area and a place marked by the violence of settlers and rubber entrepreneurs, which also involved child trafficking. It also details the situation of the Franciscan missions, the creation of boarding schools, and the inclusion, for the first time in history, of female missionaries in the educational and evangelizing processes led by the Catholic church in this region. Finally, it explains how the emphasis placed on boarding schools for indigenous children did not prevent the missions from collaborating on other tasks related to the colonization process promoted by the Peruvian State in the Amazon region.
