Comparison of students’ use and acceptance of emergency online learning due to COVID-19 in the USA, Mexico, Peru, and Turkey
    (Springer, 2021-11-01)
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and pursuant to the governments’ order of citizens remaining at home, several countries were required to transition from face-to-face instruction to an online model to provide higher education to their students. While factors affecting the use of online learning are diverse and have been studied by models of use and acceptance of technology, this cross-sectional study explores the factors unique to the current emergency situation that influence students’ use and acceptance of emergency online learning. Moreover, it proposes a model to predict a student’s cognitive engagement in Mexico, Peru, Turkey, and the USA. This is a quantitative study with an exploratory and descriptive scope and cross-sectional design. Data was collected from 1009 students from the four countries, who completed surveys anonymously. The factors analyzed were attitude, affect, and motivation, perceived behavioral control (ease of use, self-efficacy, and accessibility), and cognitive engagement. The data was analyzed using descriptive, correlation, and regression analysis. The predictive model shows that students’ attitude toward online learning impacts their cognitive engagement in Mexico, Peru, and the USA. Furthermore, self-efficacy is a significant moderator for cognitive engagement in all four countries. The model also shows that each country has different determinants for cognitive engagement. Understanding the factors that affect the use of emergency online learning is essential for the success and/or achievement of its maximum benefits in situations like a global pandemic. Limitations of this study have been identified as use of convenience sampling, and an inability to explore factors related to instruction and system attributes. Professors who did not teach online learning lacked knowledge about online educational strategies and used the technological resources that were immediately available to them. Therefore, research that explores the use of instructional strategies and the use of technological systems during emergency online learning is necessary. This study includes suggestions to incorporate open educational resources that use microlearning and emphasizes the importance of student self-efficacy; because it was predictor of cognitive engagement in all four countries. Faculty and higher education institutions can and should develop strategies to increase students’ sense of self-efficacy.

BIM adoption among contractors: A longitudinal study in Peru
(American Society of Civil Engineers, 2022-10-17)
Building information modeling (BIM) adoption in construction remains a challenge, yet no empirical studies were conducted to gauge adoption behavior changes over time. Such a longitudinal study of BIM adoption would be particularly significant at this pivotal point in the history of construction, as it undergoes a worldwide digital transformation. In some contexts, BIM adoption has been led by contractors without policy intervention; thus, contractors’ adoption behaviors must be understood before policymakers enact top-down interventions for public construction in entire supply chains. Two cross-sectional data sets were collected in 2017 (N=303) and 2020 (N=171) in Lima, Peru, to evaluate changes in a modified technology adoption model (TAM) regarding BIM adoption. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), structural equation modeling (SEM), and ANOVA were used to analyze the data. This study shows that contractors adopt BIM if they believe that BIM helps to improve project performance, rather than their own individual performance. Similarly, contractors are concerned with the easiness of implementing BIM in firms and projects rather than the ease of learning BIM. Overall, perceived usefulness to project, perceived ease of implementation, and intention to use BIM had a significant change between 2017 and 2020. Although BIM implementation increased from 25% to 39% at the project level, the adoption at the user level has not significantly changed. This finding suggests that contractors value supply chain/project level implementation benefits rather than successful individual adoption. The results also show that contractors rely on in-house BIM teams or outsourced consultants to carry out BIM-related tasks. However, this would depict a within-firm digital divide between BIM teams and site management. The results are discussed in the context of national change as a BIM policy for public construction was announced by the Peruvian government in 2019. The findings of this research may be used by decision makers to target specific groups of professionals on educational programs. Policymakers could use the findings to inform roadmaps for BIM adoption in Peru and similar countries.

Operational excellence in online food delivery service: The role of food biosafety measures
    (Emerald Publishing, 2024-11-20)
This study explores how food biosafety measures (FBM), electronic service quality and product quality influence consumer satisfaction and loyalty in the online food delivery service (OFDS) sector. It also integrates the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to form a robust framework for assessing consumer behaviours and providing insights for this sector. Design/methodology/approach: Data from 877 Colombian urban consumers were collected. The proposed theoretical model was tested using structural equation modelling (SEM) in the SEMinR package of the R program (an open-source programming language). Findings: The results reveal that food biosafety measures and product quality are the most essential factors for OFDS consumers. Besides, food biosafety measures strongly affect product and e-service quality, which in turn significantly and directly impact consumer satisfaction and loyalty. This means that it is necessary to consider both visible actions strongly related to product quality and invisible actions that highlight the role of e-service quality in ensuring operational excellence. Practical implications: To maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty, OFDS managers should consider first working with restaurants that practice high food biosafety measures so that the order leaves the restaurant in good condition. However, OFDS should maintain these measures to ensure operational excellence from the order on the platform until delivery to the end consumer. Originality/value: This innovative study demonstrates how FBMs directly affect perceptions of service, product quality, satisfaction and loyalty. This goes beyond traditional findings suggesting that food biosafety measures' influence is only indirect and mediated by satisfaction.

When age really matters: digital entrepreneurship of seniors in Latin American contexts
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2025-11-20)
This paper aims to explore the extent to which senior entrepreneurs in the Peruvian context are ready to exercise their business activities digitally and the reasons behind that. Design/methodology/approach The empirical data is collected through semi-structured interviews with a sample of 36 senior entrepreneurs working in Peru. Thematic analysis was subsequently used to determine the main ideas in the interview transcripts. Findings The authors have identified the following three categories of barriers: age-related barriers (using social media only for correspondence, desire to socialize and work outside home, lack of government support), contextual barriers (difficulty deciding what to sell digitally, difficulty finding digital clients, lack of resources to compete with giant online stores) and technology-related barriers (lack of knowledge about artificial intelligence, lack of patience to learn about new technologies, the belief that digital business must be promoted by influencers). The authors consider these barriers as explaining why senior entrepreneurs are not ready to exercise their business activities digitally. Originality/value This paper contributes by filling a gap in the literature on both digital and senior entrepreneurship about which empirical studies, particularly in the context of Latin America, have been limited so far.
