The economic reterritorialization of academic publishing and the politics of reading [Journal of Sociolinguistics]
    (De Gruyter Mouton, 2024-09-01)
Using Klein's observation of almost 35 years ago of the disturbed balance between production and reception of academic knowledge as a starting point, we reflect on some of the tensions related to current reading practices in academic publishing. Specifically, we discuss two tensions that we encounter and try to resolve in our role as editors: 1) the tension between standardization and creativity, and 2) the tension between monologue and dialogue. Throughout, we also discuss a third more general tension, namely the gap between academic values of knowledge production embedded in the collegial work for scientific publications, and the profit driven publishing industry.

Implementación de un sistema de gestión ambiental: recomendaciones para la pequeña y mediana industria
    (Brazilian Journal of Development, 2024-04-02)
In recent years, the idea that business management must incorporate the criterion of protecting the environment, in addition to quality, safety and health, as an element of competitive advantage, has become increasingly latent. Improved efficiency, energy and raw material savings, as well as an improved corporate image, are just some of the advantages derived from implementing an environmental management system in the company (Fassoula & Rogerson, 2003). On the other hand, it also ensures compliance with the regulatory framework of the different environmental vectors. The development of the work is oriented to applied and/or descriptive research. That is, it shows a mechanism that facilitates the implementation of the environmental management system (EMS), based on the requirements of ISO-14001; the process of implementation of an environmental management system in an industrial malting plant in Lima, Peru, is taken as a reference. The application of this research shows the usefulness for small and medium companies, responsible for the implementation of an environmental management system (EMS); giving them a guide for the work. The research is based on the interpretation and analysis of environmental standards, mainly the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and ISO 14001, as well as others related to the subject in question. On the other hand, the difficulties and advantages involved in the implementation of this environmental management system, based on ISO 14001, are shown.

Main challenges for measuring the sustainability of the marine ingredients industry: a systematic and critical review
    (Elsevier BV, 2026-02-01)
The marine ingredients (MIs) industry is essential to the aquaculture sector, mainly providing fishmeal and fish oil to support animal feed and human nutrition. The exponential growth of aquaculture and the heavy reliance on finite marine resources pose significant sustainability challenges and highlight the need for more comprehensive and regionally adapted metrics beyond current Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) indicators and non-conventional LCA metrics. In this systematic review, we analyzed 48 literature studies that focus on the sustainability of MIs using rigorous criteria for data quality and indicator relevance under the Prisma methodology. Our findings indicate that the studies that are mainly based on conducting an LCA provide valuable insights into environmental performance, but are hindered by inconsistent metrics, limited data availability, and a lack of integration of economic, nutritional, and ethical dimensions in the sustainability analysis. Such limitations can lead to underestimate critical issues such as biodiversity loss, overfishing, habitat degradation, or the impact of illegal fishing, while overemphasizing short-term efficiency measures, like feed conversion ratio, or environmental impacts such as global warming. Additionally, emerging novel proteins and alternative uses for fish-derived byproducts, ranging from direct human consumption to high-value applications (bioactive compounds, cosmetics, etc.) to lower value products (like biofertilizers), remain largely unexplored, given the absence of holistic and flexible assessment tools. Thus, the presence of unregulated contaminants (including additives, antibiotics and microplastics), are not yet adequately addressed in most MIs studies, despite some recent methodological advancements. This review proposes the adoption of novel metrics, the standardization of assessment methods and the integration of multi-criteria decision analysis for LCA practitioners to better capture the complex and multifaceted challenges of MIs production, covering the way for more robust and reliable sustainability assessments within the aquaculture industry.

Mold-making technology at architectural compound 60 (CA-60): A newly discovered ceramic workshop at Huacas de Moche, Peru
    (Academic Press Inc., 2025)
Ceramic molding is often addressed as a simple, repetitive, and standardized technique. Similarly, mold-making, though much less studied than molding itself, is frequently viewed as equally straightforward. Yet what specific gestures, techniques, and tools are involved in mold-making? Does internal technical variability exist behind apparent external standardization? What insights into ancient craft production can mold-making evidence provide? This paper addresses these questions through a technological study of molds from a recently discovered ceramic workshop at Huacas de Moche (Trujillo, Peru). Our study reveals that mold-making comprises multiple complex sequential steps with significant technological variation. We suggest that local Moche artisans maintained autonomy in their mold production methods, employing diverse technological approaches while sharing a common artistic repertoire, meanwhile elite oversight ensured quality standards in final products.
