Identity at the Edge of the Word: The Phenomenon of Terruqueo in Cyberspace, Forms and Hegemonic Representations
(Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, 2023-01-01)
This article analyzes one of the discriminatory discourses that has recently acquired special relevance in the Peruvian national context: cyberterruqueo. The aim is to carry out a descriptive analysis of the phenomenon —from the political-ideological and ethnic, racial and cultural perspectives—, and to study, in the context of cyberspace, the hegemonic representations that are discursively created with respect to certain sectors of the population. Methodologically, the study has an exploratory quali-tative approach. The study of these representations was based on the occurrence of this phenomenon within the framework of the Twitter social network, and the data for the analysis were collected from Twitter. Among the results, it was found that cyberterruqueo functions as a tool of social annihilation and stigmatization that is based on negative representations in order to achieve the invalidation or delegitimization of certain sectors of the population and their demands and needs, in favor of the perpetuation and domination of a hegemonic sector or establishment and its agenda. The article concludes, in turn, that virtual space and the social interactions it comprises are a reflection of reality, and that it allows for the production, reproduction and socialization of certain hegemonic representations configured in the discourse.

Life, passion and death of a Peruvian newspaper abroad during the Pacific war. Financing and tours of Federico Larrañaga to rescue El Canal (1881-1883)
    (Universidad Cientifica del Sur, 2025-04-30)
The newspaper El Canal was founded in Panama in 1881 by the Peruvian consul Federico Larrañaga after the fall of Lima. Its founding was due to an individual initiative, which was justified as an effort that would add to the media strategy to defend President Nicolás de Piérola. But, in the long term it was not a sustainable project because it required permanent financing, but it was difficult to access resources due to the economic and political crisis. The article reconstructs Larrañaga's efforts to maintain the publication of the newspaper, which initially led him to rely on national funds until he self-financed it with amounts obtained on tours he undertook to Mexico, Venezuela and Central America. We use unpublished sources from various Peruvian archives to reconstruct the itinerary and life history of the newspaper and the attempts to obtain new funds abroad.
