Regeneration of Deteriorated Internal Combustion Engine Components used in Thermal Power Plants
    (2025-01-30)
The generation of electric power through internal combustion engines plays an important role in the world economy. Exhaust cases and valves are critical engine components and are subjected to high pressures and temperatures. The additive remanufacturing technology of mechanical components that have reached the end of their useful life due to wear, through the L-DED laser directed energy deposition method, proves to be an effective method to obtain spare parts with similar or even superior characteristics to a new part, extending the product life cycle in the circular economy. The process consists of obtaining 3D models through reverse engineering, additive remanufacturing by L-DED and final machining. It was determined through the study that this methodology can be successfully applied to the exhaust boxes and valves of internal combustion engines for electric generation. The results obtained have shown that this remanufacturing method is an effective solution for the recovery of exhaust boxes and valves that have completed their useful life and can be applied to other engine elements, reducing the cost of the spare part compared to a new one and bringing with it important environmental benefits. In reference to the remanufacturing time, it has been determined that the application of the L-DED process in the exhaust boxes and valves is 3943 and 3677 s respectively. In addition to this time, the time used in the initial preparation and final machining must be added; however, the time is substantially less than the manufacturing of a new spare part, which brings with it an increase in the availability of these spare parts to perform scheduled maintenance in the engines for power generation, contributing to improve the efficiency of the national electric system.

Beyond the Presidency: The Power of Congress in Latin America
(GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, 2026-01-01)
Despite times of democratic backsliding, executive power is not on the rise everywhere. Across Latin America, congresses have been reshaping how presidentialism operates, often utilising significant decision-making authority. Yet these dynamics vary, resulting in diverse legislative trajectories and balances of power across countries. Despite low public trust and high party fragmentation, several legislatures have pursued institutional change by reshaping their own structures, revising rules to rebalance power vis-à-vis the executive, or attempting revisions but ultimately retreating in the face of presidential power. On 12 April Peruvians elect a president and a new Congress amid pronounced presidential instability. The legislature has reasserted itself by passing an important reform reintroducing bicameralism - a shift intended to increase stability and reduce fragmentation, but which may create new problems. In October, Brazil will carry out presidential and congressional elections. The incoming president will find a Congress grown more resolute over recent years - particularly in budgetary matters. This institutional change reflects increasing executive-legislative competition and a shift towards more power-sharing. In October 2023 Argentine voters elected Javier Milei, a political outsider with a radical economic reform agenda but meagre congressional support. Early signs of legislative pushback, including rule-change attempts, faded after 2025 midterm success strengthened presidential leverage over Congress.

Constructing and Disarticulating the World: Landscapes, Memory, and Power in the Cuzco of the Inkas - The Case of Chakan
    (Routledge, 2025)
This essay investigates the construction and disarticulation of social landscapes at both conceptual and material levels, tied to the memory and power of the elites in the Cuzco Valley during the Inka period. It uses a case study of the micro-basin of Chakan, situated in the far northwest of the city. The social and religious implications of the landscape shaped by the Hanan Cuzco dynasty are examined through an analysis of a colonial myth. Additionally, the ritualized disarticulation of the landscape is analyzed based on the available archaeological record from excavations at the Chakan site. The results indicate ritual abandonment of ceremonial architecture, reflecting material consequences related to the cosmogonic restructuring of the known world due to Spanish presence in the area or as part of a more intricate phenomenon of historical awareness and social change.
