Boom and bust of euphoric narratives: Peruvian football and the neoliberal mentality
    (Taylor & Francis, 2021-07-07)
In this article we propose the category of euphoric narratives both to explain the construction of the sculpture ‘Monumento a los hombres del mundial’ (Monument to the Men of the World Cup) in Lima, Peru, but more importantly, to analyse a dynamic which transcends that situation and accounts for a set of cultural changes that have arisen in strongly restructured societies for the purposes of neoliberal policies. The Peruvian national football team’s qualification for the World Cup in Russia in 2018 generated a collective sense of optimism in the national community rarely seen in recent history. The article traces the interrelation between football, a rich site for the deployment of popular narrative strategies in relation to the construction of identities, the neoliberal rationality, which feeds on and manipulates (collective) euphoria for commercial and/or political gain and the specific socio-political Peruvian context in the run-up to the World Cup in Russia.

    The testimonial novel and autofiction
    (Oxford University Press, 2022-06-21)
Starting after the second half of the twentieth century, narrative forms known as “autobiographical writing” (Molloy 1991) or “writing of the I” (Giordano 2008) occupy a central position in Latin American literature. This chapter first studies the testimonial novel, which arises in the 1960s with the political intention of denouncing the violence and historical experiences of discrimination faced by traditional communities. In addition to studying the most influential of these texts, it analyzes the critical and theoretical discussion about this genre. The second part is dedicated to the study of autofiction, as a strategy or authorial figuration, beginning with those narratives that are close to the autobiographical novel and the literature of memory, and concluding with those characterized by metafictional play.

Nineteenth-century women writers and the nation
    (Oxford University Press, 2022-08-18)
This chapter provides an account of the robust emergence of women writers in nineteenth-century Latin America and of the narratives they produced, focusing on the complex relationship between national and gender ideology, the literary field and the consolidation of the new republics, especially in the second half of the century. Rather than focusing on aestheticist frameworks for the myriad novels, novellas, and short stories; poems, essays, and plays; and diaries, letters, and press articles produced by them, it examines their interaction with the dominant male discourse and the strategies that women of letters developed in order to move beyond the age-old patriarchal mandate of “not saying what they knew, or saying that they didn’t know, or saying the opposite of what they knew” (Ludmer 48).1 If intellectuals of the so-called national period had an impossibly idealized concept of the literary woman, later critics’ and writers’ respect for them, from modernistas and throughout the twentieth century, was negligible. This rich and diverse corpus of writing published in the periodical press and in book form, from Chile to Mexico, had all but disappeared from literary memory and from the canon until it was rediscovered more than a century later by feminist activists in Latin American, (USA) North American, and European academia from the late 1990s and beyond.

The Sino-Peruvian relation and the construction of the official narrative of Peru as a hub management
    (2022-05-11)
This article discusses the driving forces behind the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Peru. Accordingly, the importance of bilateral cooperation in the development of Sino-Peruvian relations is being assessed. Given that the Chinese presence in Peru is an extended phenomenon, the article attempts to determine the extent of China’s influence on bilateral relations and its importance in building the official narrative of Peruvian decision-makers regarding the trans-Pacific image they aim to project in relation to China. For this reassion the article recurs to the productive notion of power, focusing on intangible elements mainly to enquire by the discursive constructions of the Peruvian technocrat agents and related practices embedded into the Sino-Peruvian relation −strongly led by the Asian country. The article concludes that the main topics of bilateral cooperation make it possible to single out four stages of China’s international policy towards Peru. Even though the Sino-Peruvian relation does not ground either can be explained exclusively on economic criteria or an institutional basis, the current associativity between both countries answer to the reciprocal knowledge triggered by migratory waves of the Chinese in moments of economic and political stress. At the same time, the discourses and narratives created by Peruvian technocrats acknowledge the country’s trans-Pacific identity; China’s weight in this identification is defining for the narrative of Peru as a bridge country in the 1990s and South America’s operational hub in Asia in the 21st century.

#MeReclamoMía: representaciones y narrativas en torno al cuerpo femenino de instagrammers #BodyPositive
    (University of La Laguna, 2022-01-01)
Recently, in social networks such as Instagram, it is common to find non-normative bodies challenging the hegemonic ideals that govern over the bodies. Focusing on the activism in social networks, this investigation addresses the representations and narratives about the female body of three Body Positive Fers. At the same time, this study includes three other types of participants: specialists in gender topics, body and Body Positive; fat activists and/or Body Neutrality with a critical perspective about the Body Positive movement; and followers of Body Positive accounts. Firstly, we identify the digital trajectories, profiles and content of the Instagrammers. Secondly, we analyze the representations of the female body that they show on their profiles. Thirdly, we examine the narratives about the female body that Instagrammers promote as a response to hegemonical body ideals.

La memoria del presente: literatura y activismo en Diario de una princesa montonera. 110% verdad de Mariana Eva Pérez
    (2022-04-03)
Based on the analysis of the blog and book by Mariana Eva Perez, Diario de una princesa montonera, this article proposes that memory narratives articulate as a response to current political junctures. Pérez is a daughter of the disappeared during the Argentine dictatorship, and a human rights activist in organizations regarding the terrorism victims’ vindication. The topics, tones and meta-literal allusions that Pérez displays in the blog are sustained in the dialogue that the author maintains with the historical moment of the memory policies enacted by the Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, and Mauricio Macri administrations. Her literary choices unveil how the relatives of the dictatorship victims’ memory discourses are shaped from the perspective of the present.
