Item type:Publication, Effectiveness of mindfulness in business education: evidence from a controlled experiment(Elsevier, 2021-07-01)Mindfulness has evolved into a four billion dollar industry and has inevitably attracted attention of businesses and business schools. Scholars in the fields of business tend to agree that psychological and pedagogic assertions in the field of mindfulness can be grounded within the context of cutting-edge theories and findings within Organisation Science and Education Science. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the impact of mindfulness on learning of business analysis and decision making which is a staple in MBA programmes of business schools across the world. Business schools use case study method for teaching business analysis and decision making which engages the students in real-world experiences in a controlled manner and according to Experiential Learning theory increases self-efficacy. In a randomised controlled experiment, 293 MBA students of four business schools participated. The intervention group received a standardised mindfulness training of 20 weeks as a consequence of which their mindfulness score on Mindful Attention Awareness Scale increased significantly while the stress level declined. The study found that increase in mindfulness is a highly significant predictor of increase in the marks obtained by the students in business case study tests and that stress mediates between mindfulness and the marks obtained. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Impact of mindfulness on irrigation water consumption(Frontiers Media S.A., 2022-12-14)As two irreversible trends—population growth and climate change advance further, demand for water conservation will increase. Since irrigation is the major source of use (and waste) of freshwater, the professionals in this field will be under pressure to find innovative ways to increase physical irrigation efficiency. Irrigation water management promotes the delivery of water in a quantity that meets the needs of the crop while avoiding runoff and prolonged soil saturation. Water and energy can be conserved by improving application precision and decreasing unused applications. The adoption of water conservation technologies do not always increase the physical irrigation efficiency. Paradoxically, in many cases it may also increase water withdrawal. However, there are non-economic reasons because of which farmers invest their time and effort to reduce wastage of water. Higher irrigation efficiency is likely to depend on behavioral characteristics of the farmer. This research looks at whether mindfulness is one of the characteristics that influences water conservation. It also looks at the mechanism of this effect and the mediating role of environmental concern. It is found that mindfulness has a direct effect as also an indirect effect (through environmental concern) on increase in physical irrigation efficiency. The estimated effect of mindfulness through environmental concern is about two-thirds of the total effect, the remaining one-third of the effect coming directly from mindfulness. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Social mindfulness predicts concern for nature and immigrants across 36 nations(Nature Research, 2022-12-01)People cooperate every day in ways that range from largescale contributions that mitigate climate change to simple actions such as leaving another individual with choice – known as social mindfulness. It is not yet clear whether and how these complex and more simple forms of cooperation relate. Prior work has found that countries with individuals who made more socially mindful choices were linked to a higher country environmental performance – a proxy for complex cooperation. Here we replicated this initial finding in 41 samples around the world, demonstrating the robustness of the association between social mindfulness and environmental performance, and substantially built on it to show this relationship extended to a wide range of complex cooperative indices, tied closely to many current societal issues. We found that greater social mindfulness expressed by an individual was related to living in countries with more social capital, more community participation and reduced prejudice towards immigrants. Our findings speak to the symbiotic relationship between simple and more complex forms of cooperation in societies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Contribution of Yoga to business ethics education(NeilsonJournals Publishing, 2022-01-01)This research looks at how yoga can contribute to business ethics education in MBA programmes. The effectiveness of yoga practice in breathwork, movement, and meditation was evaluated using a Randomised Controlled Trial on participants of Executive MBA programmes. Half the participants (n = 125) were assigned to the intervention group and the other half placed on the waiting list for the next programme and used as the control group. Mediation analysis was used for statistical analysis to measure the influence of yoga on the participants’ performance in business ethics related courses and to quantify the influence of mindfulness which is a mediating variable. Statistical analysis revealed that the increase in performance in business ethics related courses through mindfulness and as a direct increase through yoga were significant. Two thirds of the enhancement of performance came through mindfulness while the remaining one third came directly from yoga practice. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Reskilling Business Executives in Transition Economies: Can Yoga Help?(Inderscience Publishers, 2023-01-01)The required skill set of the business executives in transition economies is changing as the monopolistic public sector businesses are converting themselves to private enterprises with global exposure. Through the lens of mindfulness, this study investigates whether the ancient practice of yoga can support enhancement of helping behaviour and cultural intelligence of business executives in a transitional economy. PROCESS macro has been employed to study the mediation model. The study found that yogic practices significantly increase participants’ helping behaviour and also their cultural intelligence. The results support the partial mediation model with approximately two thirds of the effect on helping behaviour coming from higher mindfulness and the remaining one third coming directly from the practice of yoga. In the case of cultural intelligence, 88% of the increase comes through mindfulness while the remaining 12% can be accounted for directly from yogic practices. This is the first time the gains of benefits of yoga have been quantified in a desegregated manner. Businesses in emerging markets could view yoga not as a woke activity or a trivial pursuit, but as a support for bringing about useful attitudinal changes among their executives. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Prosocial Behavior of MBA Students: The Role of Yoga and Mindfulness(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2023-01-01)This study explores the relation between yoga and prosocial behavior (PSB) of business students and evaluates the impact of yoga on their academic performance in an MBA program. The mediating role of mindfulness is also examined. The study covers a cohort of 255 MBA students. Individual MBA student’s yoga practice, mindfulness, PSB, and performance in management case studies was measured before and after a 20-week yoga programme. The study found that yogic practices significantly increase PSB and academic performance. To assess the mediating role of mindfulness, PROCESS macro was used for regression analysis. It was found that mindfulness acts as a mediator between yoga and PSB. As a result of partial mediation, half the effect on PSB comes from higher mindfulness while the remaining half comes directly from the practice of yoga. Mindfulness also acts as a mediator between yoga and academic performance. In case of the grades obtained by the MBA students, 58% of increase comes through mindfulness whereas the remaining 42% comes from yogic practices directly. Increasing PSB among business school students would be a logical step toward promoting future management practices that are more comprehensive, socially responsible, value-based, and ethically-oriented. This study demonstrates how yoga can benefit MBA students who practise it as well as meet social demands. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Living Well: Empirically Developed Structural Equation Model for Healthy and Effective Self-Regulation(Elsevier B.V., 2023-10-01)The purpose of this study is to develop and empirically test a structural equation model (SEM) for healthy and effective self-regulation based on the propositions of self-determination theory (SDT). A cross-sectional data sample (N = 6,705) is used to test the model. The results of the SEM demonstrate good to excellent global fit indices (RMSEA = 0.06, SRMR = 0.04 CFI = 0.97, TLI/NNFI = 0.95) and excellent local fit indices (p < 0.001). It is acknowledged that longitudinal and experimental research designs will be necessary to infer causal effects. However, based on the strong theoretical and empirical grounding of the model, indications for causal effects are discussed beyond correlational relations. The local fit indices imply that autonomy of goals, intrinsic values orientation, mindfulness, and the newly integrated construct clarity about personal values positively affect psychological needs satisfaction and facets of subjective and psychological well-being. Additionally, they indicate that mindfulness and clarity about personal values have the greatest benefits on individual health, well-being, and effectiveness. These results are crucial as they emphasize the significant role of mindfulness in healthy and effective self-regulation. Furthermore, they put the spotlight on a rather new construct; clarity about personal values. By having transferred the knowledge base of SDT into an empirically derived model of healthy and effective self-regulation, this study provides well-grounded indications of how health, well-being, and effectiveness in individuals may be fostered. These indications offer new insights for theory building and practical interventions in domains like psychotherapy, healthcare, organizations, sports, and education. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Being Present: A Longitudinal Study on the Role of Mindfulness on Engagement and Burnout in Teachers(Emerald Publishing, 2023-10-19)The purpose of this two-wave longitudinal study was to examine the role of mindfulness as mediator between social support and engagement and as a moderator in the relationship between work overload and burnout, both cross-sectionally and after one year. Design/methodology/approach: The sample consisted of 243 Peruvian teachers. Structural equation modeling and SPSS Process Macro were used to test the hypothesis. Findings: The results show that mindfulness mediated the relationship between social support and engagement at both times but doesn't moderate the relationship between work overload and burnout at either time. Originality/value: This study highlights the role of mindfulness as a valuable personal resource in the workplace, as it facilitates a higher functioning at work while identifying relevant organizational characteristics that have an influence in its use.
