Item type:Publication, Proposal for used electronic products management in Mexicali(Elsevier Inc., 2022-05-01)Mexicali, a Mexican city located near the US-Mexico border, has faced several challenges related to adopting an integrated e-waste management system. Thus, the main objective of this work is to propose a new system to be implemented in phases. The current system is evaluated using several methodological approaches including field studies, surveys, interviews, and quantitative modeling via material flow analysis. We suggest the need to properly integrate both the formal and informal sectors to achieve the optimal system that mitigates environmental impacts while preserving the positive social and economic traits of the current system. Thus, without supplanting the current reuse, refurbishment, repair and maintenance practices, a hybrid system is proposed, based on a centralized facility that primarily handles those parts or materials that create environmental impacts and health hazards if mishandled. Furthermore, a decentralized transition phase toward the new system is recommended. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Moving Toward Digital Transformation by Force: Students’ Preferences, Happiness, and Mental Health(MDPI, 2023-05-01)The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated and, somehow, forced the process of digital transformation within the higher education sector. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, online modes of course delivery have become the only available way of teaching in almost all parts of the world. We conducted a study in Mexico to know about students’ preferences for these forced online class schedules, exams and assignments, and online teaching styles during this health crisis. Furthermore, this research sought to know about the impact of this forced digitalization on students’ mental health and happiness. To conduct a conjoint analysis, we collected survey-based data from 219 undergraduate Mexican students. The most preferred attributes for students for online classes were “having a short online class (50 min)”, “possibility to have 70% pre-exam assignments and 30% final exam”, and “having a humorous professor in online classes”. In terms of students’ mental health, the prevalence of “moderate” anxiety and depression was 21.8%, and the prevalence of “severe” anxiety and depression was 14.9%. In terms of happiness, male students and students with shorter online classes per day felt a higher level of happiness. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Family vs. Non-Family Networks: Chile, Mexico and Peru(Emerald Publishing, 2023-08-04)The purpose of this study is to analyze interlocking directorate (ID) networks of family and nonfamily firms (FFs) in Chile, Mexico and Peru. Design/methodology/approach: Social network analysis methodology allowed us to analyze the position of FFs within the structure of IDs at the local and transnational levels. Findings: FFs tend to have a higher proportion of board interlocks to other firms, especially FFs. In addition, FFs are more likely to occupy a brokerage position in national IDs structures. Finally, they also have a higher proportion of interlocks to other domestic firms in and nearby geographic areas. Thus, they create transnational networks. Originality/value: This paper finds evidence that supports three of the premises of interorganizational familiness literature (Lester and Cannella, 2006). FFs are part of national as well as international corporate networks more than other types of firms, through interlocking directorships.
