First results on ProtoDUNE-SP liquid argon time projection chamber performance from a beam test at the CERN Neutrino Platform
    (IOP Publishing Ltd, 2020-12-01)
The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber with an active volume of 7.2 × 6.1 × 7.0 m 3 . It is installed at the CERN Neutrino Platform in a specially-constructed beam that delivers charged pions, kaons, protons, muons and electrons with momenta in the range 0.3 GeV/ c to 7 GeV/ c . Beam line instrumentation provides accurate momentum measurements and particle identification. The ProtoDUNE-SP detector is a prototype for the first far detector module of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, and it incorporates full-size components as designed for that module. This paper describes the beam line, the time projection chamber, the photon detectors, the cosmic-ray tagger, the signal processing and particle reconstruction. It presents the first results on ProtoDUNE-SP's performance, including noise and gain measurements, dE / dx calibration for muons, protons, pions and electrons, drift electron lifetime measurements, and photon detector noise, signal sensitivity and time resolution measurements. The measured values meet or exceed the specifications for the DUNE far detector, in several cases by large margins. ProtoDUNE-SP's successful operation starting in 2018 and its production of large samples of high-quality data demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-phase far detector design.

Multiplicity dependence of (multi-)strange hadron production in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV
    (Springer, 2020-02-01)
Abstract The production rates and the transverse momentum distribution of strange hadrons at mid-rapidity ( $$\left| y\right| < 0.5$$ y < 0.5 ) are measured in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 13 TeV as a function of the charged particle multiplicity, using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The production rates of $$\mathrm{K}^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 , $$\Lambda $$ Λ , $$\Xi $$ Ξ , and $$\Omega $$ Ω increase with the multiplicity faster than what is reported for inclusive charged particles. The increase is found to be more pronounced for hadrons with a larger strangeness content. Possible auto-correlations between the charged particles and the strange hadrons are evaluated by measuring the event-activity with charged particle multiplicity estimators covering different pseudorapidity regions. When comparing to lower energy results, the yields of strange hadrons are found to depend only on the mid-rapidity charged particle multiplicity. Several features of the data are reproduced qualitatively by general purpose QCD Monte Carlo models that take into account the effect of densely-packed QCD strings in high multiplicity collisions. However, none of the tested models reproduce the data quantitatively. This work corroborates and extends the ALICE findings on strangeness production in proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV.

Multiplicity dependence of π, K, and p production in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV
    (Institute for Ionics, 2020-08-01)
Abstract This paper presents the measurements of $$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π± , $$\mathrm {K}^{\pm }$$ K± , $$\text {p}$$ p and $$\overline{\mathrm{p}} $$ p¯ transverse momentum ( $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT ) spectra as a function of charged-particle multiplicity density in proton–proton (pp) collisions at $$\sqrt{s}\ =\ 13\ \text {TeV}$$ s=13TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Such study allows us to isolate the center-of-mass energy dependence of light-flavour particle production. The measurements reported here cover a $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT range from 0.1 to 20 $$\text {GeV}/c$$ GeV/c and are done in the rapidity interval $$|y|<0.5$$ |y|<0.5 . The $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT -differential particle ratios exhibit an evolution with multiplicity, similar to that observed in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}\ =\ 7\ \text {TeV}$$ s=7TeV , which is qualitatively described by some of the hydrodynamical and pQCD-inspired models discussed in this paper. Furthermore, the $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT -integrated hadron-to-pion yield ratios measured in pp collisions at two different center-of-mass energies are consistent when compared at similar multiplicities. This also extends to strange and multi-strange hadrons, suggesting that, at LHC energies, particle hadrochemistry scales with particle multiplicity the same way under different collision energies and colliding systems.

Measurement of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of multiplicity in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV
    (Springer, 2020-02-01)
Abstract The multiplicity dependence of electron production from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum was measured in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The measurement was performed in the centre-of-mass rapidity interval −1.07 < ycms< 0.14 and transverse momentum interval 2 < pT< 16 GeV/c. The multiplicity dependence of the production of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays was studied by comparing the pT spectra measured for different multiplicity classes with those measured in pp collisions (QpPb) and in peripheral p-Pb collisions (Qcp). The QpPb results obtained are consistent with unity within uncertainties in the measured pT interval and event classes. This indicates that heavy-flavour decay electron production is consistent with binary scaling and independent of the geometry of the collision system. Additionally, the results suggest that cold nuclear matter effects are negligible within uncertainties, in the production of heavy-flavour decay electrons at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions.

Measurement of nuclear effects on ψ(2S) production in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 8.16 TeV
    (Springer, 2020-07-01)
A bstract Inclusive ψ (2S) production is measured in p-Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8 . 16 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The production of ψ (2S) is studied at forward (2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53) and backward ( − 4 . 46 < y cms < − 2 . 96) centre-of-mass rapidity and for transverse momentum p T < 12 GeV/ c via the decay to muon pairs. In this paper, we report the integrated as well as the y cms - and p T -differential inclusive production cross sections. Nuclear effects on ψ (2S) production are studied via the determination of the nuclear modification factor that shows a strong suppression at both forward and backward centre-of-mass rapidities. Comparisons with corresponding results for inclusive J/ ψ show a similar suppression for the two states at forward rapidity (p-going direction), but a stronger suppression for ψ (2S) at backward rapidity (Pb-going direction). As a function of p T , no clear dependence of the nuclear modification factor is found. The relative size of nuclear effects on ψ (2S) production compared to J/ ψ is also studied via the double ratio of production cross sections [ σ ψ (2S) /σ J /ψ ]pPb / [ σ ψ (2S) /σ J /ψ ] pp between p-Pb and pp collisions. The results are compared with theoretical models that include various effects related to the initial and final state of the collision system and also with previous measurements at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV.

Dielectron production in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at sNN =5.02 TeV
    (American Physical Society, 2020-11-25)
The first measurements of dielectron production at midrapidity $(\left|{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\mathrm{e}}\right|<0.8)$ in proton--proton and proton--lead collisions at $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{TeV}$ at the LHC are presented. The dielectron cross section is measured with the ALICE detector as a function of the invariant mass ${m}_{\mathrm{ee}}$ and the pair transverse momentum ${p}_{\mathrm{T},\mathrm{ee}}$ in the ranges ${m}_{\mathrm{ee}}<3.5$ $\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$ and ${p}_{\mathrm{T},\mathrm{ee}}<8$ $\mathrm{GeV}/c$, in both collision systems. In proton--proton collisions, the charm and beauty cross sections are determined at midrapidity from a fit to the data with two different event generators. This complements the existing dielectron measurements performed at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 13 TeV. The slope of the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the three measurements is described by FONLL calculations. The dielectron cross section measured in proton--lead collisions is in agreement, within the current precision, with the expected dielectron production without any nuclear matter effects for ${\mathrm{e}}^{+}{\mathrm{e}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ pairs from open heavy-flavor hadron decays. For the first time at LHC energies, the dielectron production in proton--lead and proton--proton collisions are directly compared at the same $\sqrt{{s}_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ via the dielectron nuclear modification factor ${R}_{\mathrm{pPb}}$. The measurements are compared to model calculations including cold nuclear matter effects, or additional sources of dielectrons from thermal radiation.

Production of charged pions, kaons, and (anti-)protons in Pb-Pb and inelastic pp collisions at sNN =5.02 TeV
    (American Physical Society, 2020-04-01)
Midrapidity production of π±, K±, and (p¯)p measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, in Pb-Pb and inelastic pp collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV, is presented. The invariant yields are measured over a wide transverse momentum (pT) range from hundreds of MeV/c up to 20 GeV/c. The results in Pb-Pb collisions are presented as a function of the collision centrality, in the range 0-90%. The comparison of the pT-integrated particle ratios, i.e., proton-to-pion (p/π) and kaon-to-pion (K/π) ratios, with similar measurements in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV show no significant energy dependence. Blast-wave fits of the pT spectra indicate that in the most central collisions radial flow is slightly larger at 5.02 TeV with respect to 2.76 TeV. Particle ratios (p/π, K/π) as a function of pT show pronounced maxima at pT≈3GeV/c in central Pb-Pb collisions. At high pT, particle ratios at 5.02 TeV are similar to those measured in pp collisions at the same energy and in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV. Using the pp reference spectra measured at the same collision energy of 5.02 TeV, the nuclear modification factors for the different particle species are derived. Within uncertainties, the nuclear modification factor is particle species independent for high pT and compatible with measurements at sNN=2.76 TeV. The results are compared to state-of-the-art model calculations, which are found to describe the observed trends satisfactorily.

Unveiling the strong interaction among hadrons at the LHC
    (Nature Research, 2020-12-10)
Abstract One of the key challenges for nuclear physics today is to understand from first principles the effective interaction between hadrons with different quark content. First successes have been achieved using techniques that solve the dynamics of quarks and gluons on discrete space-time lattices 1,2 . Experimentally, the dynamics of the strong interaction have been studied by scattering hadrons off each other. Such scattering experiments are difficult or impossible for unstable hadrons 3–6 and so high-quality measurements exist only for hadrons containing up and down quarks 7 . Here we demonstrate that measuring correlations in the momentum space between hadron pairs 8–12 produced in ultrarelativistic proton–proton collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provides a precise method with which to obtain the missing information on the interaction dynamics between any pair of unstable hadrons. Specifically, we discuss the case of the interaction of baryons containing strange quarks (hyperons). We demonstrate how, using precision measurements of proton–omega baryon correlations, the effect of the strong interaction for this hadron–hadron pair can be studied with precision similar to, and compared with, predictions from lattice calculations 13,14 . The large number of hyperons identified in proton–proton collisions at the LHC, together with accurate modelling 15 of the small (approximately one femtometre) inter-particle distance and exact predictions for the correlation functions, enables a detailed determination of the short-range part of the nucleon-hyperon interaction.

Pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles as a function of mid- and forward rapidity multiplicities in pp collisions at √s = 5.02, 7 and 13 TeV
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021-07-01)
The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidity density of charged particles in proton–proton (pp) collisions at centre-of-mass energies $$\sqrt{s}~=~5.02$$ s = 5.02 , 7 and 13 TeV measured by ALICE is reported. The analysis relies on track segments measured in the midrapidity range ( $$|\eta | < 1.5$$ | η | < 1.5 ). Results are presented for inelastic events having at least one charged particle produced in the pseudorapidity interval $$|\eta |<1$$ | η | < 1 . The multiplicity dependence of the pseudorapidity density of charged particles is measured with mid- and forward rapidity multiplicity estimators, the latter being less affected by autocorrelations. A detailed comparison with predictions from the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC event generators is also presented. The results can be used to constrain models for particle production as a function of multiplicity in pp collisions.

Long- and short-range correlations and their event-scale dependence in high-multiplicity pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021-05-01)
Two-particle angular correlations are measured in high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV by the ALICE Collaboration. The yields of particle pairs at short-(∆η ∼ 0) and long-range (1.6 < |∆η| < 1.8) in pseudorapidity are extracted on the near-side (∆φ ∼ 0). They are reported as a function of transverse momentum (pT) in the range 1 < pT< 4 GeV/c. Furthermore, the event-scale dependence is studied for the first time by requiring the presence of high-pT leading particles or jets for varying pT thresholds. The results demonstrate that the long-range “ridge” yield, possibly related to the collective behavior of the system, is present in events with high-pT processes as well. The magnitudes of the short- and long-range yields are found to grow with the event scale. The results are compared to EPOS LHC and PYTHIA 8 calculations, with and without string-shoving interactions. It is found that while both models describe the qualitative trends in the data, calculations from EPOS LHC show a better quantitative agreement for the pT dependency, while overestimating the event-scale dependency.
