Boom and bust of euphoric narratives: Peruvian football and the neoliberal mentality
    (Taylor & Francis, 2021-07-07)
In this article we propose the category of euphoric narratives both to explain the construction of the sculpture ‘Monumento a los hombres del mundial’ (Monument to the Men of the World Cup) in Lima, Peru, but more importantly, to analyse a dynamic which transcends that situation and accounts for a set of cultural changes that have arisen in strongly restructured societies for the purposes of neoliberal policies. The Peruvian national football team’s qualification for the World Cup in Russia in 2018 generated a collective sense of optimism in the national community rarely seen in recent history. The article traces the interrelation between football, a rich site for the deployment of popular narrative strategies in relation to the construction of identities, the neoliberal rationality, which feeds on and manipulates (collective) euphoria for commercial and/or political gain and the specific socio-political Peruvian context in the run-up to the World Cup in Russia.

Drilling under the COVID-19 pandemic: a diary study of professional football players' mental health and workout performance
    (Wiley, 2021-05-04)
There is little research examining how individuals' daily experience during a pandemic affects their daily mental health status and work performance. To address this knowledge gap, we invoke conservation of resources theory to propose a resource-based framework explaining how individuals' daily COVID-19 intrusive experience affects their daily mental health status (depression and anxiety) and work performance via its effect on daily psychosocial resource loss and gain; We further examine whether their supervisors' daily visionary leadership behaviour alleviates the adverse impacts of daily COVID-19 intrusive experience. Results, based on daily diary data from 139 football players (or soccer players) at 15 professional football clubs over 5 days during the COVID-19 pandemic, provided support for our predictions. Our study extends the literature by providing previously undocumented evidence on daily within-person variations in mental health status and work performance during a pandemic and by offering theory-driven insights into the mediating and moderating mechanisms involved in within-person variations.

Prevention and Control of Violence and Aggression in Football Fans: Implications for Sport Psychologists, Fans, and Policymakers
    (Taylor & Francis, 2023-11-02)
This research was conducted to design an interpretive structural model of factors affecting the prevention and control of violence and aggression in football fans. The statistical population of this study was entirely composed of sport experts, executive managers, sociologists, and management professors in Iran. Thirteen individuals were accordingly selected as the research sample using non-probability purposeful sampling. The effective factors were identified through library study and reviewing the theoretical foundations and research background. Confirming the content validity of these factors by considering experts' opinions, 14 factors were finally identified. The interrelationships between the factors were determined using Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM), and network analysis based on Decision Making and Trial Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) was also employed to measure their importance, ranking them accordingly. The factors were categorized into four levels according to ISM. The highest level (first level) includes "match day service quality," "fair refereeing," "consolidation of social ties," and "cognitive reconstruction of fans." The second level contains "design, protection, and security of stadiums," "patterning and identification," and "use of calming techniques." "Awareness and informing" and "anger control training" belong to the third level, while the lowest level (fourth level) includes "media," "fan organizations," "laws, regulations, and security solutions," "moral education or persuasion," and "teaching communication skills to fans." Among them, the last level is fundamental, influencing the other factors. The results obtained in this work can be used as a basis for policymaking to reduce violence and aggression among football fans.

Internationalisation strategy in sport: the case of Flamengo, the largest Brazilian football club
    (Routledge, 2025-01-01)
Research question: The present study analyses an emerging market (EM) football club and its internationalisation strategy, seeking to understand its motivations, perceived competitive advantages, strategies and targets. In doing so, we highlight differences from major European clubs’ strategies. Research methods: An in-depth case study was conducted with Flamengo, the wealthiest and most popular Brazilian football club. As sources of information, we counted on four formal in-depth interviews; observation, and informal interactions during 123 meetings with different actors; and 1,527 pages of secondary data, all duly coded and triangulated. Results and findings: EM clubs’ internationalisation strategies seem to be influenced by their outsider position in the central network of clubs and leagues. Such outsidership influences the advantages they choose to exploit, their strategies, and market selection. Implications: This study contributes to filling literature gaps with direct practical implications regarding (1) multi-club ownership, understudied as a mode of internationalisation; (2) the internationalisation process of EM football clubs, to date unexplored; and (3) the comparison of the Latin American/EM club model to the mainstream European club mode of management and internationalisation.
