Item type:Publication, The COVID-19 Pandemic and the Peruvian Catholic Church:(Universidad de Murcia, 2020-12-27)This paper examines the Peruvian Catholic Church's responses to the challenges of COVID-19, and how this context might constitute a new stage of the Peruvian Church’s reception of Vatican II. First, it values that the Catholic Church has performed a significant social contribution by distributing humanitarian aid, providing spiritual accompaniment, and articulating the civil society to face the needs raised by COVID-19. This paper argues that such response relates to the process of reception of Vatican II in Peru. During the 1970s and 1980s, the Peruvian Church developed pastoral structures and ecclesial networks that specialized in engaging with and serving the world. Nowadays, the Church offers those strengths to the State and society. Second, this paper examines how the pandemic presents opportunities for a new discernment of the "signs of the times" by highlighting some pastoral challenges the Peruvian Church needs to address in light of Peru’s new social reality and Pope Francis’ call for Church reform. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The employer as a guarantor of occupational safety in the Peruvian Criminal Code. Globalization, criminal risk and COVID-19(2021-01-01)The present COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted that people, in the globalized society, have to face up to risks. This public health crisis has also revealed what type of risks workers have to face up to. This paper addresses economic and political transformations of globalization, starting from the global supply chain and the emergence of private authorities. From this point, this paper analyzes the protection of occupational safety in the Peruvian Criminal Code, considering a legal good derived from the concept of decent work that serves as a barrier to commercial exploitation in the globalized market. It emphasizes the employer as liable for avoiding risks produced from labor relations and how this liability works in the context of the COVID- 19. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Rethinking Water Sustainability: Precipitation Changes in the Peruvian Andes in the Face of Climate Change(2023-06-13)In high-altitude regions, such as the Peruvian Andes, understanding the transformation of precipitation types under climate change is critical to the sustainability of water resources and the survival of glaciers. Conventional wisdom has primarily focused on the snow-rain dichotomy, often overlooking the potential importance of graupel and hail. In this study, we offer a fresh perspective on this issue, investigating the distribution and types of precipitation on a tropical glacier in the Central Andes. We utilized data from an optical-laser disdrometer and compact weather station installed at 4709 m ASL, combined with future climate scenarios from the CMIP6 project, to model potential future changes in precipitation, including the often-ignored hydrometeor forms of graupel and hail. Our findings highlight that increasing temperatures could lead to significant reductions in solid-phase precipitation, including graupel and hail, with implications for the mass balance of Andean glaciers. For instance, a 2°C rise might result in less than 10\% of precipitation as solid, transforming the hydrological processes of the region. The two future climate scenarios from the CMIP6 project, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5, offer a broad perspective on potential climate outcomes that could impact precipitation patterns in the Andes. Our study underscores the need to revisit and expand our understanding of high-altitude precipitation in the face of climate change, paving the way for improved water resource management strategies and sustainable glacier preservation efforts in these fragile ecosystems.
