The challenges of wastewater reuse in Peru

Overlooked legacies: climate vulnerability and risk as incrementally constructed in the municipal drinking water system of Lima, Peru (1578–2017)
    (Elsevier, 2021-03-05)
This article analyzes “not knowing” and overlooked or invisibilized information related to the drinking water system in Lima, Peru, a rapidly expanding megacity of the Global South in a region considered to be at high risk to climate related hazards. Within this system, unavailable, or disregarded information exists for a range of topics, from quantitative information about reservoir levels to more qualitative concerns about decision-making and administration. Currently, information made publicly available focuses on end users, specifically: census data on percent of homes connected to the municipal network and statistics comparing consumption patterns across neighborhoods. This deflects attention from topics related to water supply (expansion of urban hydraulic reach, infrastructure investment), and decision-making and control. However, this article considers a type of “not knowing” underlying all of the above, which is the forgotten or overlooked development of Lima's drinking water system over time. It presents results of a study of the history of this system from its origins in the 16th century through modernization in the early- and mid-20th century, concluding with infrastructure investment in the era of climate change. It focuses on continuities in the spatial orientation of water infrastructure as well as long-term conflicts over its administration, to demonstrate how the current system is the result of a centuries-long process of accretion, rather than a system designed to serve the current urban population. Finally, it concludes with a discussion of the significance of this infrastructural and conceptual inertia for understandings of Lima's water risk and vulnerability.

Quantification of the benefits derived from the nature-based solutions in the very arid and densified urban context of metropolitan Lima
    (University of São Paulo, 2022-11-21)
Increasing the proportion of local vegetated surfaces within the highly densified context of Lima, Peru is considered a key local strategy of sustainable development. However, it may experience limitations as it could exacerbate water stress in the city. Therefore, quantifying the scale of benefits derived from local vegetated surfaces, mainly in terms of sensitivity to water use and urban temperature regulation, is necessary to optimize the management of water use for its preservation. The application of the international tool, Green Area Ratio at the local level, could contribute so that the increase in the proportion of vegetated surfaces in Lima considers a multifunctional sense to improve urban quality in different social, urban and environmental aspects. The results show that in order to be applied in the arid context of Lima, the tool would require adaptation, mainly of the scoring system, especially high values commonly assigned by foreign versions to some vegetated-based systems. This would make the version of the Green Area Ratio suggested for Lima in this study a novel and unique system, which demands further deeper research. However, it can be used as a preliminary framework based on scientific evidence, in case its official application is considered to support local sustainability guidelines and/or quality improvement plans for green areas. Its application could strengthen the implementation of multifunctional vegetable surfaces and nature-based solutions adapted to the aridity of the context.

Museums as Tools for Sustainable Community Development
    (2023-08-09)
A new way of defining and managing museums has emerged in the 21st century, with local communities at the heart of the equation. At the same time, communities have become aware of the political and symbolic importance of working with and being represented by museums: not only can such collaborations strengthen local identities and political power, but it can also enable communities to benefit from the potential of museums to attract resources derived from tourism. Within this framework, the team at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru is participating in the EU-LAC Museums project. As part of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme, the initiative aims to develop community museums, foster links between museums and their communities and carry out projects that strengthen local heritage. The Peruvian team developed its proposal in four community-centred archaeological museums on Peru’s northern coast: the Chan Chan and Huacas de Moche site museums in the region of La Libertad, and the Túcume and Sicán museums in the Lambayeque regions. The project’s objectives are to identify how these museums involve local communities, and the role they play in the social, educational and economic development of surrounding territories. Once identified, the project’s actions aimed to consolidate and strengthen these different forms of interrelation, which encourage sustainability, regional integration, education and the use of technologies. To account properly for the vulnerability of local populations amid catastrophic floods caused by the El Niño phenomenon, it was crucial to apply a territorial perspective. This chapter presents the different experiences and actions carried out in the ‘Peru Case Study’ of the EU-LAC Museums project, highlighting the current impact of four local museums. It also promotes the active participation of the institutions and their communities in the future, using a model of joint heritage management that contributes to local sustainable development.

The Impacts of Digital Inclusion on the Development and Sustainability of Rural Women's Ventures: A Scoping Review
    (2025-04-14)
entrepreneurial ventures will be conducted through an open coding process. This approach enables the systematic identification, categorization, and analysis of concepts and patterns found within the full texts of the selected documents. The coding results will be documented in a spreadsheet that will include the following fields: article information, research objective, methodology, identified effects, business process in which the effect is documented, results obtained, main conclusions, and limitations. For this review, the presentation of the findings will be limited to a bibliometric analysis and the synthesis of evidence through qualitative extraction.
