Item type:Publication, Gender gap in the graduation of Peruvian industrial engineers(Universidad del Zulia, 2021-01-01)In recent decades, the female presence has increased in areas related to science and engineering. However, its participation is still incipient in many of these fields. Consequently, the objective of this studywas to explain how a group of female engineering teachers represent the experiences of their students in acontext characterized by male dominance. The methodology was exploratory and descriptive, interviewing24 Peruvian teachers. The findings identify that female students exhibit differentiated behaviors andparticipation with respect to males, associated with performance expectations, attribution of characteristicsand differentiated treatment by teachers that tend to decrease them with respect to males. In addition, theytend to have greater family burdens, affecting their permanence in studies. This, however, varies dependingon the university, with the situation of women from public universities being the most vulnerable. The studyconcludes that the interviewees show a critical vision of these situations, but with a tendency to overvaluefemale capacities and to develop certain attributes to conquer the labor market; rather than to eliminatethe barriers that exclude them from it. Item type:Publication, Unlocking innovation: How enjoyment drives GenAI use in higher education(Frontiers Media SA, 2024-01-01)Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is rapidly transforming education holds immense potential for enhancing learning experiences and fostering innovation skills crucial for success in today’s rapidly changing job market. However, successful integration depends on student adoption. This study investigates factors influencing business students’ intention to use Gen AI in Innovation courses, focusing on the role of Perceived Enjoyment. Method: A cross-sectional predictive analysis was conducted using data from 92 business undergraduate students in a Peruvian higher education institution. A survey questionnaire, adapted from Teo and Noyes, was used to measure perceived enjoyment, usefulness, ease of use, attitude toward, and intention to use Gen AI tools. Results: The study found a strong positive relationship between Perceived Enjoyment and the intention to use Gen AI in Innovation courses. Furthermore, Perceived Enjoyment was positively associated with perceived ease of use. Interestingly, perceived usefulness did not show a significant effect on the intention to use Gen AI. Conclusion: Our finding challenges the traditional emphasis on perceived usefulness as the primary driver of technology acceptance. Instead, our results suggest that prioritizing user enjoyment and ease of use in the design and implementation of Gen AI tools may be a more effective strategy for promoting their adoption in educational settings. This shift in focus from utility to experience could be crucial in unlocking the full potential of Gen AI to transform education.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Simone Roach’s theory’s effectiveness in improving nursing students’ attitudes towards applied ethics(Editorial Ciencias Medicas, 2024-01-01)In recent years, cases of corruption have been reported in healthcare institutions. According to their nature, there should be professionals with integrity and values that regulate ethical actions, a process that should begin in their training. Students are observed with unethical attitudes to pass the subjects, who are not interested in acquiring new knowledge. To evaluate the effectiveness of applying Simone Roach's theory to improve the attitude towards applied ethics in Nursing students. Methods: A quantitative pretest and posttest study, with a quasiexperimental design and a control group, was conducted in a Peruvian public university during 2019. The population consisted of 20 fourth-semester Nursing students, randomly divided: 10 for the study group and 10 for the control group. The form on attitudes towards applied ethics was applied to both groups, before and after applying Simone Roach's 7C’s theory to the study group. Absolute frequency distributions and percentages were used; as well as the chi-squared test (x2) with p < 0.05, in order to identify significant statistical differences. Results: In the pretest, 80 % of the students were observed to have a negative attitude towards applied ethics. After applying Roach's theory, 80 % of the students in the study group presented positive attitudes towards applied ethics, while the same was observed in 30 % of the students in the control group. Conclusions: The application of Simone Roach's theory was effective in improving attitudes toward applied ethics in Nursing students from a Peruvian public university. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Is there room for interculturality? Indigenous youth in Peruvian private universities and the scholarship programme Beca 18(Routledge, 2024-01-01)Applying an ethnographic approach, this study examines recently implemented scholarship programmes for Indigenous people in private higher education (HE) institutions in Peru. Interviews with students and staff, participant observations, and participatory activities reveal distrust of scholarship holders by government staff and programme regulators, who exercise various surveillance and control mechanisms. Staff at private universities hinder cultural diversity among students through segregation or integration strategies to deal with Indigenous students, thereby curtailing an intercultural approach. Indigenous students ask for more integration activities and intercultural dialogues as they claim a lack of adequate support programmes and real inclusion, which leads to higher dropout rates. This study contributes to the recovery of students’ voices and concerns by unveiling persistent inequalities in HE. The findings have implications on policy design that take for granted problematic assumptions riddled with colonial prejudices and privatisation ideologies within the field of HE. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Persistence, retention, and interruption in higher education among Peruvian scholarship students in a context of emergency remote learning(Arizona State University, 2024-08-27)In Latin America, higher education inequality disproportionately affects individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and Peru is no exception. Since 2012, the National Scholarship and Student Loan Programme (PRONABEC) has disbursed grants, aiming to enhance access to higher education for impoverished Peruvian young people. However, the unprecedented global health crisis in 2020 significantly affected the university experiences of scholarship recipients, introducing new challenges to their experience of higher education. This study, conducted in 2021, explores the factors influencing the persistence, retention and interruption of university studies among scholarship recipients. This qualitative, biographical study, based on the ecological model of higher education, involved 60 current and former scholarship students from public and private universities in three regions. Findings reveal that scholarships played a financial crucial role in supporting educational goals and institutional supports were pivotal in maintaining student retention. While personal motivation and family support contributed to student persistence overall, certain scholarship recipients faced challenges related to work and family demands. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
