What makes teams more innovative in small high-technology ventures? The role of leadership
    (Inderscience Publishers, 2020-01-01)
Fostering team innovation has been considered as a major leadership function in high-technology ventures because they face intense competition in the market. In this research, we analysed the direct and indirect effects of transformational leadership on team innovation in small high technology ventures. A total of 24 team leaders and 133 employees from high tech industries in Iran participated in our study. Using structural equation modelling, we found that transformational leaders play a crucial role in enhancing team innovation, facilitating team trust and team communication quality. Nevertheless, transformational leadership was not related to team innovation directly. We also found that transformational leadership plays a facilitating role in improving trust and communication within a team. In the context of developing countries, this study provides empirical evidence of the prominent role of transformational leadership in encouraging team innovation by facilitating communication and trust among team members.

Competition and productivity: Evidence from Peruvian municipalities
    (The MIT Press, 2022-11-23)
This paper uses new data on the removal of local, sector-specific barriers to firm entry across 1,800 municipalities in Peru to estimate the impact on firm productivity and markups. New legislation in 2013 strengthened the national competition authority's mandate to enforce the elimination of local entry barriers, providing a quasi-experimental setting to identify the impact of competition on productivity within the controlled institutional environment of a single country. We find that the elimination of local entry barriers boosted productivity, pointing to the critical role of subnational market entry barriers in explaining countries’ laggard productivity performances despite liberalized national regulatory environments.

A decolonial approach to innovation? Building paths towards Buen Vivir
    (Routledge, 2022-01-01)
Innovation has been central to development. Yet most assumptions around innovation stem from values derived by capitalist economies such as growth, individualism, and competition which prove to only widen inequalities and promote unsustainable environmental models of extraction and consumption. This paper explores what values and assumptions would underlie innovation in development if based on an alternative ontological and epistemological stance linked to the Andean cosmovision of Buen Vivir. We focus on the case of an Indigenous-led initiative in the Andes of Peru to highlight the underpinnings of its innovation processes. In doing so, we aim to contribute to both development studies literature and innovation studies by exposing the limitations to the accepted Western approach to innovation and exploring what decolonising innovation in development would look like.
