Applied bibliometrics and information visualization for decision-making processes in higher education institutions
    (Emerald, 2020-05-26)
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse how using bibliometrics and information visualization can provide a “picture at glance” from which decision-makers can structure processes, thus organizing outputs/outcomes from inception. Design/methodology/approach This study carried out a bibliometric-oriented review on studies on higher education students' retention; 1,962 records were downloaded from Scopus and grouped into three five-year intervals: 2002–2006 (n = 236), 2007–2011 (n = 584) and 2012–2016 (n = 1,142). Centrality measures and text-mining techniques were used to analyse data. Findings Clusters of academic networks were identified by using co-citation analysis. Also, terms with high semantic value were ranked and grouped by using automatic term extraction and co-word analysis. Practical implications The bibliometric approach used in this study identifies clusters of authors specialized in student retention, as well as detects the primary terms within this research field. Originality/value This paper provides evidence that a bibliometric approach in conjunction with data visualization can be a valuable complement to in-depth literature reviews for the decision-making process.

Intangible cultural heritage and tourism. Analysis of scientific production published in Ibero-American tourism journals
(Universidad de Alicante. Instituto Universitario de Investigaciones Turísticas, 2022-01-01)
Tourism based on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has been gaining prominence within current tourism practices, and also in tourism studies. In this sense, this bibliometric study aims to characterize the production and publications in Ibero-American tourism journals in order to determine the advances and gaps in research on ICH. Fifty-nine articles from 12 tourism journals were analyzed. The findings reveal that, although cultural heritage tourism is a global trend, the publications analyzed here do not reflect this. Regional publications honour their geographical scope both in the origin of their authors and in the topics covered, which gives this work a purely regional perspective. There is no marked tendency for publications or authors to engage in systematic research and publication on ICH in its relationship with tourism. Brazil and Spain stand out as the most prolific countries in terms of the number of authors and affiliate institutions, and issues related to the tourist use of heritage, heritage education and the impacts of tourism are also prominent. These results allow researchers in tourism or ICH to locate specialized articles on Ibero-America and editors of regional tourism journals to recognize the lack of articles on ICH, as well as the need to publish in English to gain visibility. Future research should incorporate post-COVID-19 recovery within a sustainable approach to tourism use of the ICH.

The Relationship Between Scientific Production and Economic Growth Through R&D Investment: A Bibliometric Approach
    (Phcog.Net, 2023-09-01)
This quantitative bibliometric research measures the efficiency of investment in R&D for the 17 more relevant countries investing in R&D through a novel indicator based on the number of scientific articles (associated with stock markets), produced for every 1% of investment in R&D in terms of GDP. The study is justified by the need to deepen the relationship between investment in R&D and economic growth, and was conducted for developed and emerging countries separately, so that the understanding of which countries or regions’ investment in R&D and its consequent scientific production has the greatest impact over the size of their economies through innovation. Our findings indicate clearly that R&D investment strongly correlates to the economy’s size of the studied countries. In addition to finding our novel indicator statistically significant with respect to economic growth through a series of multiple linear regressions and proposing economic growth not statically, but as a dynamic cumulative effect over time, this becomes more relevant for emerging countries (represented in this study by China, Brazil, India, Russia and Turkey, or BRIC + Turkey) compared to developed ones, which decants into an opportunity for scholars and particularly governments to design or restructure their R&D policies towards innovation.

Health Literacy Concepts, Themes, and Research Trends Globally and in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Bibliometric Review
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2023-11-01)
    (1) Background: Health literacy (HL) debates have increased significantly in the last two decades. HL concepts/themes and models have achieved substantial development in the US and Europe. Although there have been some efforts to develop HL in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), these seem to be few and scattered. This paper reviews and discusses developments of HL concepts and themes globally and in LAC over the last two decades. (2) This study aimed to identify the prevalent health literacy concepts/themes deployed globally and in LAC as reported in academic journals from 2005 to 2022. We looked into which fields of knowledge have been informing HL research over the last decades. (3) Methods: We conducted a structured search on the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, PubMed, and SciELO databases to extract the textual data for bibliometric analysis. We analyzed the textual data with VOSviewer and Biblioshiny to better understand health literacy themes and strands currently being researched in the LAC region. We conducted the searches in two periods: the first in May 2023 and the second in October 2023. (4) Results: The bibliometric study highlighted five WoS categories informing most HL global studies: (i) public environmental occupational health; (ii) environmental sciences; (iii) health policy services; (iv) health care science services; and (v) communication. The two predominant categories in LAC are public environmental occupation health and health policy services. Journals hosting HL publications come from these WoS categories. Themes in HL publications can be organized into four thematic clusters: (i) analytical (research designs, analytic techniques, and criteria for examining HL data); (ii) psychometric (measurement properties of data collection tools); (iii) pragmatic (practical issues related to implementing HL programs); and (iv) well-being (effectiveness of HL programs on mental health and illness treatment). (5) Conclusions: There is expanding interest in health literacy among scholars. The number of publications has increased substantially, particularly over the last five years. These are dominated by the Global North. The metrics show that LAC and Africa are trailing in publications. There is an emerging focus on adult literacy, functional/low health literacy, and their effect on improving capabilities, comprehension, and communication regarding health-related topics.

The research landscape on generative artificial intelligence: a bibliometric analysis of transformer-based models
    (Emerald Publishing, 2026-02-24)
Purpose – The aim of this study is to offer valuable insights to businesses and facilitate better understanding on transformer-based models (TBMs), which are among the widely employed generative artificial intelligence (GAI) models, garnering substantial attention due to their ability to process and generate complex data. Design/methodology/approach – Existing studies on TBMs tend to be limited in scope, either focusing on specific fields or being highly technical. To bridge this gap, this study conducts robust bibliometric analysis to explore the trends across journals, authors, affiliations, countries and research trajectories using science mapping techniques – co-citation, co-words and strategic diagram analysis. Findings – Identified research gaps encompass the evolution of new closed and open-source TBMs; limited exploration across industries like education and disciplines like marketing; a lack of in-depth exploration on TBMs' adoption in the health sector; scarcity of research on TBMs' ethical considerations and potential TBMs' performance research in diverse applications, like image processing. Originality/value – The study offers an updated TBMs landscape and proposes a theoretical framework for TBMs' adoption in organizations. Implications for managers and researchers along with suggested research questions to guide future investigations are provided.

A bibliometric analysis of customer experience in the omni-channel era
    (Routledge, 2025-01-01)
In the fiercely competitive market, coordinating physical and digital channels to deliver a seamless omnichannel customer experience (OCX) has become crucial after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, existing research on OCX lacks a comprehensive understanding due to fragmented approaches. This underscores the critical necessity of establishing a structured framework to formulate an omnichannel customer experience strategy. To bridge this gap, this study conducts a multifaceted approach bibliometric analysis to examine influential aspects of literature from 2014 to mid-June 2023 using science mapping techniques. This research contributes by identifying research streams related to the need for recognizing aspects that affect the customer experience, the influence of technology, logistical challenges, and omnichannel fulfillment strategies. Furthermore, the study proposes a new comprehensive theoretical framework for OCX strategy implementation, which includes a proposed omnichannel supply chain structure. Implications for managers and researchers, along with suggested research questions to guide future investigations, are provided.

A Bibliometric Analysis on Network-Based Systemic Risk
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2025-11-01)
The vulnerability of the global financial system to systemic risk-related adverse events has become more evident in recent years, as shown by the 2008 financial crisis and the global pandemic. This study examines systemic risk and its contributing factors using network analysis to understand how contagion occurs. To achieve this, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using a cluster analysis of publications from 2020 to 2025. The bibliometric analysis covered 1642 papers related to systemic risk and financial transmission networks. The CiteSpace software was used to identify seven thematic clusters. The results show the relevance of topological analysis in explaining the connection between institutions and the spread of risk. There is also a clear tradition in the literature of applying the DY spillover index, which captures the temporal dynamics of systemic connectivity. Multilayer networks stand out as a trend in recent studies, as they have the potential to represent different types of relationships simultaneously between nodes. Finally, the literature pays attention to systemic connectivity problems during crises, which can amplify volatility and generate forced asset sales, highlighting the need to use advanced VAR-type models to anticipate risk transmission and guide macroprudential management.

A bibliometric literature review of integrated data and model based diagnosis approaches for the industry 4.0
    (Taylor & Francis, 2026-01-01)
The increasing presence of Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things has accelerated the digital transformation of industrial environments, commonly known as Industry 4.0. In this context, Artificial Intelligence techniques are increasingly used to support automatic diagnostic tasks. This paper presents a systematic literature review of hybrid diagnostic systems that combine Model-Based Diagnosis (MBD), which relies on physical models to detect abnormal behaviour, and Data-Based Diagnosis (DBD), which uses machine learning to identify faults from data. The review has two objectives: (i) to examine how MBD and DBD methods have been combined to improve diagnostic performance, and (ii) to identify integration opportunities through existing machine learning frameworks to support reusable and adaptive solutions. A bibliometric analysis was conducted following a simplified PRISMA 2020 methodology. From over 1300 records, 75 articles were selected and analysed. Most hybrid systems adopt a serial architecture where DBD classifiers analyze residuals from MBD for fault detection and isolation. The most common applications are found in smart manufacturing and energy systems, and as for the most used machine learning techniques. Challenges remain regarding real-time scalability, interpretability, and standardisation. This review provides a structured foundation for designing explainable, efficient, and reusable diagnostic solutions for Industry 4.0.HighlightsThe literature review of hybrid data-based diagnosis (DBD) and model-based diagnosis (MBD) systems in Industry 4.0 reveals key trends and promising future directions.Hybrid diagnostic systems facilitate online monitoring, improve explainability, and enable intelligent feature selection. The most widely used hybrid architecture for integrating MBD and DBD techniques is serial integration.Serial integration uses MBD for residual generation, and DBDs for fault isolation and detection. There is growing interest in integrating hybrid models with explainability and online learning. The most common applications are in the automotive and energy sectors, in predictive maintenance and smart monitoring.Current hybrid diagnostic systems lack real-time scalability and lack interpretability and reusability.
