Item type:Publication, Abuse in the Latin American Church: An evolving crisis at the core of Catholicism(Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)This book addresses the crisis of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America, the region of the world with the highest percentage of Catholics. Bringing together research from across the continent, it demonstrates that abuse within the Church is indeed a global phenomenon, though abuses have taken different forms according to varying sociocultural contexts. With attention to abuses committed against children, women and vulnerable adults - by both men and women - within the settings of parishes, new religious movements and international religious organizations, it also raises questions of justice, asking how to assess the suffering of victims, how to deal with abusers and how to prevent abuses. It will therefore be of interest to scholars of religious studies, sociology, Latin American studies, criminology, theology, and religious leaders with interests in the abuses and scandals that have been revealed in the worldwide Church. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Characteristics of the leaders of social and environmental enterprises in Latin America and the relationship with the success of their businesses(Emerald Publishing, 2024-07-30)This study aims to understand the leadership characteristics of founders of social and environmental enterprises in Latin America who have achieved business success with a focus on sustainability despite difficult social, economic, political and even health contexts in which they live. Design/methodology/approach: This nonexperimental research is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study. Twenty-one in-depth interviews were conducted with social/environmental entrepreneurs of the Kunan Network (an organization that groups the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Peru). Findings: The study analyzes the leadership profile and characteristics of entrepreneurs who have created profitable businesses with a social/environmental focus that solve relevant social problems and contribute to improving people’s quality of life and caring for the environment. Research limitations/implications: Although only 21 business leaders with outstanding participation and positive social and environmental impact were included in this study, they were supported and recognized by the Kunan Network. Originality/value: The study contributed to the conceptualization and understanding of the profile of leaders of social and environmental enterprises, whose main challenges are to solve social or environmental problems of society and contribute to improving the quality of life of people and the environment. Knowing the profile of these entrepreneurs generates value to the knowledge of the subject and contributes to understand and propose strategies to improve the ecosystem of social-environmental entrepreneurship in emerging countries such as Peru. This will contribute to the creation of relationships and alliances with various social actors: public, private, third sector, academia, among others, for the management and promotion of sustainable business. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Clericalism in its Latin-American variant(Taylor and Francis, 2024-01-01)Research developed in the northern hemisphere on the abuse of power, conscience, and sexuality in the Church concludes that clericalism, as a perversion of the exercise of authority, is primarily responsible for the crisis, a perspective shared by Pope Francis. This phenomenon is not merely a result of individual shortcomings; rather, it thrives due to systemic elements ingrained within the institution. Certain components of clericalism are universal but other traits are influenced by the unique social and cultural context of individual regions. This chapter proposes to address a critical gap by analyzing and focusing on clericalism in its Latin-American version. Several factors, such as the prestige of the Church, its involvement in highly popular social projects, the weakness (and at times, corruption) of government institutions, the discretionary handling of resources (in particular financial), machismo, cultural tendencies towards authoritarianism, and the Europeanization of seminary formations, transform priests into exceptional beings and exacerbate their monarch-style power over passive lay people. Of particular significance is the aura of sanctity that the sacrament of ordination carries, taking on new dimensions in the context of Latin-American “enchanted modernity.” Within this framework, priests are perceived as bearers of powerful blessings, akin to almost divine entities. This perception has witnessed a recent reinforcement, further solidifying this trend. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Mayors Unchecked: Vertical and Horizontal Dimensions of Local Autonomy in Latin American Municipalities(SAGE Publications Inc., 2025-03-01)In this paper, we argue that, relative to chief executives at higher levels of government, mayors in Latin America often operate with fewer outside checks on their scope of action, with problematic consequences for democracy. To make this argument, we examine a number of factors that can render mayors especially powerful and autonomous as political actors, and distinguish between the vertical (inter-governmental) and horizontal (inter-branch) dimensions of their autonomy. Vertically, we show that mayors have more institutional leeway than governors given the absence of the mechanism of interventions from the national government that could check their power. Horizontally, we identify a number of institutional and noninstitutional advantages that can enable mayors to exercise predominance vis-à-vis municipal legislative bodies and other actors in the local political landscape. To support our argument, we provide evidence gathered from fieldwork in six municipalities in three different countries (Chile, Paraguay, and Peru).1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
