It is attempted to show the possibilities of symbolic representation under an interdisciplinary approach, from Art and Architecture applied to the peripheral problems of the environment and to their reconstruction from the territory, evidencing a symbolic heritage based on the production of cartographies that show ethical-aesthetic values as a possibility of representation of the visual memory contained in the belonging processes occurring in the city of Metropolitan Lima. How could we view these reconstruction processes made by our memory around the spaces where we live and participate or how could migration paths be evidenced from that perspective? A methodology is proposed based on three phases of recognition of a personal route of rearrangement of individual history which starts from topographic knowledge of the territory in the reconstruction of personal experiences, to develop then cartographic sketches for the viewing of their implication in the reading of migration processes, as well as collective problems. This methodology will be explained through the development of three specific projects. Individual visual and installation artworks «De Reducto n. 2 a la Portada de Maravillas: Hacia el Descanso», «La Ruta de 50 Años» and Group Project «CO(HABITAR)».It can be recognized that the viewing of migration processes, from their symbolic aspects, represent diverse variants of recognition of the events experienced in the territory implying various layers of a reading that before being illustrative could be viewed through the processes of artistic expression, depending on the different origins of their participants and their experiences in the city. Those processes reconstruct the time lived as a cartographic set that can be viewed.

[Encuadre I] La República sin ciudad: urbanismo, arquitectura y ciudadanos, 1821-1840
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Fondo Editorial, 2021)

[Encuadre VIII ] Lima, barriadas y urbanismo. Morfología, patrones y transformaciones
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Fondo Editorial, 2021)

Living in the city beyond housing: urbanism of the commons
    (Taylor and Francis, 2021-05-06)
Building from the definition of urbanism as the study of the physical needs of urban societies, the author highlights the importance of those needs and activities that are necessarily communal and cannot be reproduced and managed at the individual or small-scale local level and which sustain dwelling in the city. With the rise of capitalism and the accompanying commodification of space at a global scale, urbanism has prioritised the market value of both land and housing. Presently, urbanisation processes are dominated by one political-economic trend influencing urbanisation processes across the planet: neoliberalisation and three of its most fundamental and interrelated consequences on urban centres: privatisation, commodification and individualism. Social mobilisation was geared towards obtaining land titles and basic services and, once those demands are met, communal organisation and mobilisation is greatly debilitated. Klinenberg defines social infrastructure as the physical places and organisations that “shape the way people interact” and that “determine whether social capital.

Urban planning as a pedagogical experience in intermediate cities in northern Peru, 2011–2016
    (Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2022-01-01)
Intermediate cities have undergone important transformations in this century and face major challenges. Local governments, however, lack sufficient skills to tackle them, favoring short-term actions in the face of planning’s inefficiency and lack of legitimacy. The Transversal project embeds into the urban planning process of smaller intermediate cities the co-production of a territorial project with the participation of local actors in a series of sequential workshops, linking research activities, academic courses, training of officials, and development of specific plans and projects. This participatory methodology links the short- and long-term urban planning in local management and leads to a reformulation of academic methodologies in urban interventions, both in the assessment of firsthand qualitative information and in harmonizing local and academic time frames. The sequential workshops constitute the backbone of planning as a pedagogical experience, questioning the academic activities’ continuity and their integration to local development.

The presence of high-rise multifamily housing in the central areas of Latin American cities has been a trend since the 1980s, driven by the global economic liberalization. In Metropolitan Lima, this boom is evident in the construction of such housing in central districts like Jesús María, Lince, Breña, San Isidro, Miraflores, and others. However, over the past 15 years, this trend has extended to the city’s periphery. Comas is one of the districts where high-rise apartments have appeared, particularly due to projects in the El Retablo area on the former Aeroclub de Collique site. This suggests changes in both urban development in the district and in the expectations and experiences of citizens regarding this new type of housing. This study will focus on the latter, specifically investigating the residential trajectories of current residents of the El Retablo condominiums in Comas and how their expectations and desires influenced their decision to move to this new type of housing. The methodology is qualitative: interviews were conducted with residents from various condominiums in the area for subsequent analysis. The main reasons for moving to these condominiums were found to be the low cost of the apartments and the desire to own something. These reasons were influenced by their previous residential trajectories

Mirar hacia abajo.
This article examines archaeological windows as urban devices capable of linking the past and the present in contemporary public space. Through a critical analysis of two recent interventions in Lima’s Historic Center—the Plazuela del Teatro and the side atrium of the Church of Santo Domingo—it reflects on the technical, narrative, and ethical challenges involved in making the heritage subsoil visible. The essay argues that these windows should not be understood solely as solutions for protection or display, but also as discursive tools that reveal the social, political, and cultural dynamics of the past. It examines how the exposure of colonial hydraulic systems or distinct funerary practices generates new urban interpretations that link heritage, memory, and identity. Furthermore, the essay discusses the museographic, technical, and symbolic implications of these interventions and emphasizes the need for a technical assessment, effective cultural mediation, and citizen participation in the management of archaeological heritage. Looking down—both literally and metaphorically—is presented as a way to engage with urban history from the present, recognizing the multiple layers that make up the city. The article adopts an essayistic structure with an interdisciplinary approach that integrates urban planning, archaeology, and memory.
