Item type:Publication, Performando la patria: "Los patriotas de Lima en la noche feliz"(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2022-12-23)Los patriotas de Lima en la noche feliz, a stage play that is part of the performative program of the declaration of the independence of Peru in 1821, has been mostly studied based on its content and style. This article reviews the way this play has been approached from different disciplines and proposes a study from the aesthetics of the performative. From an analysis of the performative components, both mimetic and ritual, it is suggested to pay attention to the exclusions, the symbolic and fictional spaces, and the character hierarchy that the play proposes. In this way, this study reveals the play’s contradictions and limitations when it comes to representing the emerging Peruvian republic: the inaugural work of republican theater envisions a rational, “civic” and white/creole Peru that excludes the possibility of a heterogeneous nation. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Reconstructing the sequence of an Inca Period (1470-1532 CE) camelid sacrifice at El Pacífico, Peru(Elsevier, 2021-11-26)Animal sacrifice has played an important role as a material expression of the ritual behavior practiced by different societies around the world. In the South American Andes, the ceremonial immolation of llamas is well documented by both ethnohistoric and ethnographic sources. Nevertheless, archaeological evidence of animal sacrifice remains poorly documented. In this paper, we report the burial of two young camelids from El Pacífico, a Formative Period ceremonial site located on the central coast of Peru. AMS radiocarbon dates suggest the ritual sacrifice occurred when the architecture of the site was no longer in use, around the time of the Inca conquest. Based on the presence of cut marks and fly pupae, we suggest that one of the camelids, a yearling llama, was sacrificed by removal of its heart and buried shortly thereafter. Similarly, given the location of cut marks and representation of skeletal parts, we infer that the second camelid was slaughtered for human consumption prior to burial. In accordance with documented Andean rites, archaeological evidence from El Pacifico suggests that practitioners of camelid sacrifice followed a behavioral script following the selection of the animal to its final interment. We hypothesize the costly performance of this ceremony at an ancestral sacred site was part of a social and political strategy for promoting intergroup social cohesion during the arrival of the Incas to the region. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Voces en el silencio(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2023-11-13)This paper explores the effects of hospitality rites and the co-creation of common spaces as a means to achieve transitional justice in Peru, 20 years after the 1980–2000 internal armed conflict. It describes a tea ceremony in La Hoyada, a place used by the Army as a clandestine burial ground. A foreign act of hospitality breaks the temporality of the site; mindful actions create silence, and the voices of people are better heard. This work describes the development of an incipient methodology, an intimate language of presence, and how video recordings of participants’ testimonies captured the feelings arising in a one-time silent event.
