The definition of part of Lima’s district, Barranco, as a Monumental Zone towards the end of the nineties displayed the precarious state of the properties valued as cultural assets. Thus, in the search for the perdurance of the heritage and continuous use of these assets, adaptive reuse interventions arise in the 21st century, in the district. This research proposes architectural recycling as a viable intervention for the conservation and longevity of the built heritage. Therefore, initiating from the understanding of these structures as the integrity of their history and different stages of their intervention, physical changes are analyzed as a representation of their design strategies and their spatial results in three case studies. These, considered valuable examples to signify the above-mentioned viability of adaptive reuse in other monumental areas.

Mirar hacia abajo.
This article examines archaeological windows as urban devices capable of linking the past and the present in contemporary public space. Through a critical analysis of two recent interventions in Lima’s Historic Center—the Plazuela del Teatro and the side atrium of the Church of Santo Domingo—it reflects on the technical, narrative, and ethical challenges involved in making the heritage subsoil visible. The essay argues that these windows should not be understood solely as solutions for protection or display, but also as discursive tools that reveal the social, political, and cultural dynamics of the past. It examines how the exposure of colonial hydraulic systems or distinct funerary practices generates new urban interpretations that link heritage, memory, and identity. Furthermore, the essay discusses the museographic, technical, and symbolic implications of these interventions and emphasizes the need for a technical assessment, effective cultural mediation, and citizen participation in the management of archaeological heritage. Looking down—both literally and metaphorically—is presented as a way to engage with urban history from the present, recognizing the multiple layers that make up the city. The article adopts an essayistic structure with an interdisciplinary approach that integrates urban planning, archaeology, and memory.

Memoria y olvido en imaginarios y paisajes urbanos
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2025-12-16)
This essay explores how memory/remembering and oblivion/forgetting shape urban landscapes and collective imaginaries. Throughout history, societies have been molded by oral, written, and artistic traditions, as well as by spatial experiences and perceptions that foster attachments to place. In a continuous feedback process, the presence and absence of memory transform the built environment. Drawing on a comparative perspective between global contexts and two case studies in Lima, an international exposition known as La Feria del Hogar and the La Herradura seaside resort, we examine how memory, or its absence, influences city-making and the ways we imagine urban spaces.
