Departamento de Economía, 2011)The main objective of this study is to test income differences between wage earners and self-employed in the labor markets of Peru. To this purpose we used information from household surveys at national level for the years 2008 and 2009, and semi parametric methods were utilized for comparing labor incomes (propensity score matching and difference of differences). The results suggest the existence of labor segmentation between these two types of jobs (i.e. wage-earners and self-generated). Both methods show differences between 22 and 31% (with difference of differences) and between 33 and 64% (with propensity score matching). - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Departamento de Economía, 2011)Following the studies of Jaramillo (2004), Céspedes (2006) and Del Valle (2009), the present research evaluates the short term effects of the increase of the minimum wage on employment and labour income in Lima Metropolitana. The contribution of the paper consists in modeling the labour market in three sectors: formal employment, “competitive” informal employment and “subsistence” informal employment. This will allow us to identify the differentiated effects of the minimum wage in the labour market. We propose that the increase in the minimum wage imposes a higher barrier to the demand of low skilled labour, expulsing these workers to subsistence activities in the informal sector, while employment in the “competitive” informal sector remains unaffected. Consequently, we expect a higher labour income in the formal sector, a lower labour income in the “subsistence” informal sector due to the increased competence, and no significant changes in the “competitive” informal sector. We design a stratified propensity score matching methodology for the empirical identification of the “competitive” and “subsistence” informal sectors, and follow Neumark (1994) for the impact assessment of the minimum wage. The results confirm the hypothesis about the effects on employment, but fail to confirm those about the effects on labour income. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Departamento de Economía, 2010)This study analyses the labor market dynamics in Peru through labor market transitions, specifically determining if the labor vulnerability – defined as the probability of losing a formal job and, in particular, getting an informal job – has been reduced. Not enough evidence was found to prove a reduction of the total vulnerability between 1998 and 2008. The multinomial probit model used, showed that the structural reforms of the nineties helped to reduce workers’ labor vulnerability, but with a reduced effect. Other control variables analyzed in this study, such as schooling or sex, showed to have more influence on labor vulnerability. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Departamento de Economía, 2007)The objective of this article is to analyze the reason why Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policies in Peru focus on issues related to the community and the environment, neglecting labor issues. CSR labor programs are those who aim to offer a “productive and decent work, under conditions of freedom, equality, safety and human dignity”. After an exhaustive review of the theoretical literature and the analysis of CSR policies in Peru, we believe that the reason for the low interest on CSR labor policies is the lack of demand from society for such policies. We state the existence of a social necessities hierarchy where, due to the poverty level and the weakness of our institutional system, labor rights are considered a luxury good. In this context, the interest on poverty and environmental issues, even if it has an internal component, is associated to the demand from developed countries and multinational firms. We can say the same thing about today’s debate about labor rights and free trade agreements. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
