Organizational resources and survival of startups firms – a qualitative analysis in the Peruvian context
    (Emerald, 2020-10-28)
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use a combination of resource-based theory and dynamic capabilities theory to explore the phenomenon of startup survival in an emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem. Design/methodology/approach The study has a phenomenological research design, with an exploratory scope and qualitative approach. It uses in-depth interviews to identify the perceptions of ecosystem agents about the phenomenon of survival. Findings This paper argues that startup survival should be studied as a construct that is reflected by four conditions: break-even point, accelerated growth, cash stock and continuous operation. Furthermore, it is formed by the interaction of five mainly interacting resources: human capital, social capital, entrepreneurial capital, organizational capital and the incubation process. Originality/value The study offers a holistic model of survival that could be applicable to incipient entrepreneurial ecosystems such as the Peruvian one. This model presents survival as a reflexive-formative construct and not as a dichotomic variable (enterprise operating/enterprise closed) as has been commonly considered in the literature.

Dynamic capabilities and survival of startup firms
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Departamento Académico de Ciencias de la Gestión, 2023-05)
Startups provide benefits to countries because of their capacity to promote economic and social development. Nevertheless, startups face great challenges to survive, especially in the Peruvian context wherein they have limited capacity for innovation and a lack of organizational resources. Thus, this paper discusses why the obtention of ordinary organizational resources (e.g., the founder’s professional experience and entrepreneurial team networks) and the development of dynamic capabilities (e.g., the ability to learn from imitating business models and the capacity to adapt products and processes to target customers) are urgently needed for the survival of Peruvian startups and explains the distinction between these organizational resources and capabilities. Furthermore, recommendations for entrepreneurs in this regard are outlined in the conclusion.

Assessing the impact of corporate entrepreneurship in the financial performance of subsidiaries of Colombian business groups: under environmental dynamism moderation
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021-12-01)
Corporate entrepreneurship creates opportunities in employment, technological advances, value creation, and cultural transformation for entrepreneurial ecosystems, entrepreneurs, governments, economies, and society around the globe. The of this study is to assess the impact of corporate entrepreneurship on the financial performance of subsidiaries in Colombian business groups under the moderating effect of the environmental dynamism, because the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and financial performance in emerging economies must differ from developed economies. Using a cross-sectional structural equation modeling analysis, this study assessed the impact of entrepreneurial orientation and corporate venturing on the firm financial performance of 87 subsidiaries of Colombian business groups at different levels of environmental dynamism. This study also confirms that the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship and performance is context-dependent and that entrepreneurial orientation has a strong and positive causal relationship with corporate venturing. Additionally, subsidiaries of Colombian business groups increase their financial performance when also does the entrepreneurial orientation, and decrease financial performance when so does corporate venturing. Furthermore, the results show that environmental dynamism does not have a moderating effect on the relationship between corporate entrepreneurship of subsidiaries in Colombian business groups and their performance. This paper would contribute to important areas in Latin America business, where such studies are scarce.

A contextual approach to women's entrepreneurship in Latin America: impacting research and public policy
    (Inderscience Publishers, 2021-01-01)
The field of 'women in entrepreneurship' is growing attention from public policy and academia. However, the literature has been dominated by models and frameworks that were developed mostly in developed economies with a set of particular characteristics that do not match the Latin American reality. This conceptual paper identifies five contextual conditions to consider while analysing women's entrepreneurship in Latin America compared to the Northern Hemisphere: 1) high rates of women's entrepreneurship; 2) high rates of informality; 3) traditional culture and self-expression; 4) low rates of innovation-based ventures; 5) developing ecosystems. We discuss how these contextual conditions interact with the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis. Finally, both a research agenda and a public agenda are suggested. This article calls for a Latin American research perspective on women entrepreneurs and suggests that promoting women into sustainable entrepreneurship contributes to regional development, impacts economic activity, improves income distribution, reduces poverty and fosters gender equality.

Psychological empowerment and job stress in higher education institutions in Ecuador
    (Dove Medical Press Ltd, 2022-01-01)
Both psychological empowerment and job stress have been the subjects of great concern, studied mainly in developed countries. In emerging economies, few studies have contributed to the knowledge of the relationship between these two constructs. This study analyzed the relationship between the dimensions of psychological empowerment and job stress in tenured professors from public higher education institutions in Ecuador during 2019, providing insights for achieving better results regarding the productivity and well-being of teachers. This research seeks to bridge the knowledge gap concerning psychological empowerment and job stress within an academic context in an emerging economy. Methods: In this quantitative study, a confirmatory model was proposed. Correlation analysis was used to investigate whether psychological empowerment dimensions are related to job stress. Data were collected from a sample of 200 tenured professors working at public universities located in Zone 3 of Ecuador in 2019. The instrument applied for psychological empowerment was proposed by Spreitzer, composed of four dimensions—meaning, competence, impact, and autonomy. For job stress, the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R) instrument applied was proposed and revised by Osipow. Results: Through structural equation modeling with partial least squares, it was possible to demonstrate that psychological empowerment reduces levels of job stress only when it is perceived that there is autonomy, fewer limitations, and more freedom. No evidence was identified that other components of psychological empowerment, such as meaning, competence, and impact, are related to job stress. Conclusion: The results indicated that the model used to explain the relationship between these variables had weak predictive power. Furthermore, only one research hypothesis is accepted. Finally, these findings are corroborated and explained by the different perspectives presented by various authors.

Trends in the literature about the adoption of digital banking in emerging economies: A bibliometric analysis
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-12-01)
This study examines the trends in the literature about adopting digital banking in emerging economies. It is based on the concepts of digital transformation and technological adoption, which significantly impact the development of the banking industry. A quantitative approach was used through a bibliometric analysis using data from Scopus to achieve the objective. The search equation allowed 118 publications to be extracted and analyzed. The results show that digital banking in emerging countries is a growing field of research that has driven the of new information technologies. The perceived usefulness of digital banking is a key factor in promoting its adoption in the market. Attributes such as security and trust were identified as affecting the level of user satisfaction. Most studies are based on technological adoption, where perceived risk, usefulness, and ease of use are key to understanding the intention to use these technologies. Some countries’ concerns about financial inclusion, cyber security, and trust in financial technology are evident. While digital banking has the potential to increase the coverage of financial services, there are concerns about cybersecurity risks and user data protection.

Female leadership in startups: analyzing survival rates and challenges in emerging economies
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2026-01-01)
The authors studied how leadership, gender and funding work together as key factors in startups' survival, explaining performance differences among high-growth firms. This study aims to focus on the important role of female leadership and financial resource allocation in helping businesses last longer in emerging markets, in a Latin American context. Design/methodology/approach The authors use a longitudinal analysis of 888 startups supported by government subsidies over eight years. The authors applied Cox proportional hazards models to measure how gender and funding affect startups' chances of survival. Findings Results show that startups led by women have significantly higher survival rates than those led by men, with a 42.57% lower risk of failure. Also, every 1% increase in funding is linked to a 40.93% drop in failure risk. The findings show the combined advantage of female leadership together with strong financial support. Practical implications The results of the study can help policymakers, investors and entrepreneurship support organizations developing strategies to encourage inclusive leadership and improve funding methods that can impact firm stability and growth. Social implications By highlighting the higher performance of women-led startups, this study supports the value of gender equality in entrepreneurship and shows the wider benefits of having diverse leadership in business communities. Originality/value The research adds to the strategic management literature by offering evidence of the positive effects of gender diversity in leadership and financial resources on startups survival. Building on earlier studies the authors add a focus on emerging economies, and calculate how much of an advantage women-led firms have.

Examining the Relationship Between Organizational Ambidexterity and Firm Performance in New Technology-Based Firms
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2026-03-01)
Organizational ambidexterity is an essential topic in management research. A growing number of studies argue that organizational ambidexterity is increasingly critical to the sustained competitive advantage of firms. However, there is less research on ambidexterity in new technology-based firms, despite the significant impact it has on local and national economies. The study examined the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and firm performance (non-economic and economic). The sample consists of 102 Colombian new technology-based firms. A latent variable design or structural equation modeling was followed. The statistical method was Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). According to the results, organizational ambidexterity is positively related to both non-economic and economic performance. Organizational ambidexterity explained 10% of the variance of the economic performance and 56% of the variance of the non-economic performance. These findings highlight the importance of organizational ambidexterity to obtain better firm performance, especially non-economic performance related to customer perception, employee satisfaction, and improvement in the quality of products and services in new technology-based firms.

Entrepreneurial traits and sustainable entrepreneurial orientation in Peru: A PLS-SEM analysis of micro and small-sized enterprises
    (Elsevier BV, 2025-12-01)
The study investigates how individual-level entrepreneurial traits influence the development of Sustainable Entrepreneurial Orientation (SEO) among decision-makers in micro and small-sized enterprises in Peru, highlighting SEO as a dynamic capability critical for advancing sustainability goals in emerging economies. Rooted in a positivist paradigm, the analysis employed the PLS-SEM technique on a sample of 121 decision-makers from micro and small-sized enterprises operating across various sectors in Peru, a highly entrepreneurial country in Latin America. The results indicate that SEO is fostered by a combination of entrepreneurial traits, including conscientiousness, resilience, self-efficacy, and cognitive reappraisal, an emotional regulation mechanism. This study represents an initial effort to assess SEO at the individual level. In terms of managerial implications, the findings suggest that micro and small-sized enterprises, along with their decision-makers and members, should be oriented toward sustainable entrepreneurship to contribute to the 2030 Agenda. To achieve this, it is essential to foster entrepreneurial traits that promote SEO as a capability influencing the predisposition of individuals and organizations toward sustainable practices. By applying a PLS-SEM model, the study identifies which entrepreneurial traits exert a stronger influence on SEO at the individual level in Peruvian micro and small-sized enterprises. By linking psychological traits to sustainability capabilities, the study offers new insights into fostering sustainable entrepreneurship in emerging economies. The findings also underscore the strategic role of universities and policy instruments in developing these traits to support progress toward the 2030 Agenda.
