In vivo assessment of corneal biomechanics under a localized cross-linking treatment using confocal air-coupled optical coherence elastography
(Optica Publishing Group (formerly OSA), 2022-05-01)
The localized application of the riboflavin/UV-A collagen cross-linking (UV-CXL) corneal treatment has been proposed to concentrate the stiffening process only in the compromised regions of the cornea by limiting the epithelium removal and irradiation area. However, current clinical screening devices dedicated to measuring corneal biomechanics cannot provide maps nor spatial-dependent changes of elasticity in corneas when treated locally with UV-CXL. In this study, we leverage our previously reported confocal air-coupled ultrasonic optical coherence elastography (ACUS-OCE) probe to study local changes of corneal elasticity in three cases: untreated, half-CXL-treated, and full-CXL-treated in vivo rabbit corneas (n = 8). We found a significant increase of the shear modulus in the half-treated (>450%) and full-treated (>650%) corneal regions when compared to the non-treated cases. Therefore, the ACUS-OCE technology possesses a great potential in detecting spatially-dependent mechanical properties of the cornea at multiple meridians and generating elastography maps that are clinically relevant for patient-specific treatment planning and monitoring of UV-CXL procedures.

DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE OF A 3D-PRINTED EXOSKELETON FOR HAND REHABILITATION IN OSTEOARTHRITIS
    (Elsevier BV, 2025-04-01)
(the aim of the study): This study focuses on designing an innovative 3D-printed exoskeleton tailored for hand rehabilitation in women aged 65 and older with second-degree osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis, a progressive joint disease, impacts daily activities by causing pain, reduced mobility, and muscle weakness. The condition affects women over 55, creating a critical need for accessible solutions. While physiotherapy remains key, current rehabilitation devices, like exoskeletons, are often expensive, rigid, and impractical for home use, limiting their effectiveness.

Highly Efficient Ultrasound-Assisted Anthocyanin Extraction for Colorimetric Sensors and Drug Delivery Systems in Wound Dressings
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2025)
Anthocyanins were extracted from Peruvian purple cabbage (PC) using ultrasonication, a greener and more efficient technique. The anthocyanin extract was incorporated into polymeric alginate membranes to obtain a pH-sensitive biosensor to monitor wound healing processes and drug delivery. The halochromic behavior was tested in five different acidic media (pH 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) giving a differential colour for each. The antioxidant capacity of the PC extract was evaluated using the ABTS discoloration assay. A 1% (w/v) solution of the lyophilized extract resulted in 55.17 ± 0.46 TEAC mg/g. Phenolic content and equivalents of cyanidin-3-glucoside were evaluated using the Folin-Ciocalteu and pH differential assays, respectively, resulting in 36.1 ± 0.55 GAE mg and 8.63 ± 0.54 of C-3-G mg per gram of lyophilized extract, respectively. Finally, the PC extract was embedded in alginate (AL) membranes and characterized by contact angle and transparency.
