Item type:Publication, The effectiveness of prevention programs for problematic internet use in adolescents and youths: a systematic review and meta-analysis(Masaryk University, 2021-01-01)Problematic Internet use (PIU) can lead to dysfunction and undesired consequences, especially in adolescents and youths. Preventive interventions can reduce them, but should be built on sound evidence. This review synthesizes the available evidence on the effectiveness of primary prevention programs for PIU in adolescents and youths. It adds to previous reviews by broadening the search to general and specific problematic behavior. Two independent reviewers performed a systematic search for published studies on PIU and internet addiction in English, French and Spanish using PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials, and Scopus. Published experimental and quasi-experimental studies that assessed the effectiveness of primary prevention programs targeting PIU behaviors were considered for inclusion. Full texts for eligible studies were retrieved and assessed for quality. Five studies were retained for narrative synthesis. Three of them based the intervention strategy on an underlying theory, one on media literacy, and one used an educational-based approach. A meta-analysis showed that all five interventions were effective in preventing internet addiction separately. However, when using the Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman (HKSJ) estimator and removing one of the studies because of a disproportionate Hedges’ g, combined effects were no longer significant. Although PIU is a popular topic, little is known about ways to prevent it. This review demonstrates that prevention programs can be based on different theoretical approaches, but that the available evidence is too heterogeneous to derive generalizable conclusions concerning their effectiveness. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Predicting social anxiety through peer rejection and fear of negative evaluation in youth(2024-01-01)This This study aimed to examine the predictive roles of peer rejection and fear of negative evaluation in relation to social anxiety among adolescents in Peru. Methods and Materials: The research employed a correlational descriptive design with a sample of 378 adolescents selected based on the Krejcie and Morgan sampling table. Participants were recruited from public and private secondary schools in Peru using stratified random sampling. Standardized instruments were used to measure the study variables: the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A) for social anxiety, the Peer Experiences Questionnaire – Revised (PEQ-R) for peer rejection, and the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale (BFNE) for fear of negative evaluation. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 27. Pearson correlation was used to examine the relationships between the dependent and independent variables, and linear regression was conducted to assess the predictive power of peer rejection and fear of negative evaluation on social anxiety. Findings: The results revealed that both peer rejection and fear of negative evaluation had significant positive correlations with social anxiety (p < .01). Linear regression analysis showed that both independent variables significantly predicted social anxiety (p < .001), with fear of negative evaluation emerging as the stronger predictor. These findings indicate that adolescents who experience higher levels of peer rejection and who exhibit greater fear of negative evaluation are more likely to report elevated symptoms of social anxiety. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of both interpersonal experiences and internal cognitive mechanisms in the development of social anxiety among adolescents. The findings suggest that addressing fear of negative evaluation and improving peer relationships may be key targets for early intervention and prevention strategies aimed at reducing social anxiety in school-aged youth.study aimed to examine the structural relationships between thought/action fusion, cognitive beliefs, mindfulness, and experiential avoidance with symptoms of OCD in a non-clinical population. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Psychometric Analysis of a Brief Measure of Emotional Intelligence (EQ-i-M20) in Teenagers from Lima(AIDEP, 2023-01-01)The research aimed to assess if the EQ-i-M20 presents evidence of validity regarding its internal structure, measurement invariance between men and women, and acceptable reliability. The sample consisted of 788 adolescents between 11 and 18 years old from an educational institution in Lima (Peru). The internal structure was evaluated by the Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM), both the oblique model and the bifactor, the invariance of measurement with a multiple ESEM group, and its reliability using the α and ω. The results indicate that in men and women. the original factor structure of five oblique factors is replicated, that it has an acceptable degree of measurement invariance, and the reliability values are satisfactory. In conclusion, the EQ-i-M20 is an instrument with adequate psychometric properties. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Different Trajectories from a Common Crisis: Survival Migrations and Resilience of Venezuelan Adolescents to Peru(SAGE Publishing, 2023-11-07)This article examines the biography of adolescents who emigrated from Venezuela with family members due to economic hardship. It aims to highlight how a common crisis produces a variety of experiences, but that resilience is a central aspect of all life courses. It analyzes the stages of the adolescents’ migratory trajectory: their departure, journey, and settlement in Peru. The results show that the crisis homogenises the living conditions and produces a heterogeneity of migration experiences in which resilience is ever-present. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Influence of sleepiness, quantity, and quality of sleep on academic performance in adolescent students of a Colombian public institution(Medknow, 2026-06-01)BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep-related variables and academic performance in Spanish Language and Mathematics among adolescents from a Colombian public school. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted, which included 185 students (12–18 years, both sexes) from a Colombian public school. Two questionnaires were applied to obtain the data: the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Academic performance was measured using final and subject-specific grades in Spanish and Mathematics. Bivariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to explore associations between sleep variables and academic outcomes, adjusting for age and sex. RESULTS: Bivariate analyses revealed significant negative associations between sleepiness and key academic performance indicators, including final average grade, Spanish language average grade, and annual average grade. By contrast, no significant associations were observed between overall sleep quality and academic performance. When controlling for confounding variables in multivariate regression analyses including sleepiness, age, and sex showed that the previously observed associations between sleepiness and academic performance were attenuated and no longer statistically significant. These findings suggest that the effect of sleepiness on academic outcomes may be influenced by age, indicating increased somnolence among older adolescents. CONCLUSION: Daytime sleepiness, rather than subjective sleep quality, appears to negatively influence academic performance in adolescents, particularly in language-related outcomes. Interventions to reduce sleepiness may enhance educational achievement. Longitudinal studies using objective sleep measures are recommended to clarify causal pathways linking sleep, cognition, and learning.
