Effects of the use of digital technologies on the performance of firms in a developing country: Are there differences between creative and manufacturing industries?
    (SciKA, 2022-01-01)
This paper aims to analyse the effects of the use of digital technologies on firms’ net sales and productivity. The technology adoption approach is applied in empirical research using data from the National Enterprise Survey in Peru. Using the OLS method on a sample of 2,970 firms from creative and manufacturing industries in Peru, the effects of digital technologies on net sales and productivity are determined. Findings indicate that there is a positive relationship. However, these relationships can be different depending on the type of digital technology, the size of the firm and the manager’s gender proportion. We found that most of these technologies are more commonly related to creative industries than manufacturing firms. These relationships have greater statistical significance to net sales in large companies within both types of industry. However, SMEs have greater statistical significance with respect to productivity in both types of industries. Lastly, given the positive effect on these relationships, we conclude by highlighting the importance of managers crafting their technology portfolio and digital capabilities properly and the need for further research to determine the performance of companies in the context of developing countries.

The effect of organisational culture on interorganisational relationship and firm performance
    (Inderscience Publishers, 2022-01-01)
Interorganisational relationships have often been associated as antecedents of financial and market performance. However, little is known about its effects on operational performance that is relevant to firm competitiveness and sustainability. On the other hand, studies relating to firms' culture within interorganisational relationships are scarce. In this sense, this study is unique in that it explores the influence of cultural dimensions on operational performance within interorganisational relationships. Using a survey questionnaire, 154 responses were collected from suppliers of a large service organisation. A regression analysis was accomplished, demonstrating a significant moderating effect of cultural dimensions (governance formalism and strategic focus) on relationship commitment, investment, and operational performance. This research helps managers to reveal the cultural characteristics of suppliers that improve operational performance, suggesting the significance of additional studies focusing on culture, performance, and interorganisation relationships. Besides, it demonstrates the importance and impact of cultural dimensions on interorganisational relationships and firms' operational performance.

The performance of regional governments under the results-based budgeting framework: A two-stage sectoral analysis
    (EDP Sciences, 2022-03-01)
The results-based budgeting (RBB) framework is a public management strategy in which economic resources are allocated to certain budget programs, oriented towards delivering specific products and results to the population. The present paper analyzes the regional governmentsa' efficiency in using their economic resources, under the RBB framework, with an application to the Peruvian context. To this end, we employ a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model with bootstrapping. In the first stage, different sectors of the regional governments are considered individually: education, security, health, sanitation, transportation, and recreation. In the second stage, the overall efficiency index is calculated using the sectoral indices obtained in the first stage. Finally, the factors or determinants influencing the level of efficiency are analyzed. The results show improvements in efficiency levels in the areas of health and sanitation, to the detriment of the rest of the sectors. The average overall efficiency level over the period 2013-2016 remains in the range of 0.25-0.30, which indicates an inefficiency level of 70%. Finally, the variables fiscal autonomy, capital stock, and population density show a positive relationship with respect to the overall efficiency index.

Macha Caporal: bridging gaps, embodying resistance

A new lineage nomenclature to aid genomic surveillance of dengue virus
    (Public Library of Science, 2024-09-01)
Dengue virus (DENV) is currently causing epidemics of unprecedented scope in endemic settings and expanding to new geographical areas. It is therefore critical to track this virus using genomic surveillance. However, the complex patterns of viral genomic diversity make it challenging to use the existing genotype classification system. Here, we propose adding 2 sub-genotypic levels of virus classification, named major and minor lineages. These lineages have high thresholds for phylogenetic distance and clade size, rendering them stable between phylogenetic studies. We present an assignment tool to show that the proposed lineages are useful for regional, national, and subnational discussions of relevant DENV diversity. Moreover, the proposed lineages are robust to classification using partial genome sequences. We provide a standardized neutral descriptor of DENV diversity with which we can identify and track lineages of potential epidemiological and/or clinical importance. Information about our lineage system, including methods to assign lineages to sequence data and propose new lineages, can be found at: dengue-lineages.org.

Sustainable entrepreneurial orientation (SEO) and organizational performance: A gender-moderated perspective in Peru
    (Institute of Economic Sciences, 2024-11-27)
Sustainable Entrepreneurial Orientation (SEO) is an emergent concept and a complex dynamic capability that could explain the behavioral predisposition of individuals and organizations to contribute to sustainable development. This study examined the impact of decision-makers' SEO on the organizational performance of their companies. In addition, the study evaluated the moderating role of gender in the relationship between SEO and performance. The approach of the study was explanatory and non-experimental. It used a PLS-SEM technique on a sample of 121 decision-makers of micro and small enterprises operating in different sectors in Peru, a highly entrepreneurial country in Latin America. After validating the SEO measurement from the individual perspective, the results showed that SEO does affect performance. However, the moderating role of gender on the SEO-performance relationship was not empirically validated. This study contributes to the literature on sustainable entrepreneurship by confirming that the phenomenon of SEO, typically assessed at the organizational level, is also an important antecedent of organizational performance when viewed from the individual perspective. Although the moderating effect of gender was not proven, this study provides insightful directions on the SEO-performance relationship. Thus, by validating the SEO instrument that considers its components from an individual perspective, the literature on this strategic orientation has been expanded.

Influence of reputation, innovation, and knowledge on the performance of MSMEs in the orange economy sector
    (Cogent OA, 2024-01-01)
Studies on entrepreneurship and its impact on economic, political, and social development have increased considerably over the last decade. One of the challenges faced by various countries is the development of companies within the orange economy, which refers to creative and cultural industries with significant potential to generate employment and wealth. Despite this potential, there is a notable lack of empirical research on the factors affecting the management and performance of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) within this sector. This study addresses this research gap by examining the influence of reputation, innovation, and knowledge on the performance of MSMEs in the orange economy sector in Colombia. Utilizing partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze survey data from entrepreneurs, the results reveal that reputation moderates the relationship between innovation and performance, as well as the relationship between knowledge and organizational performance. This study contributes to the literature by providing new insights into the dynamics of creative industries in developing countries and highlighting the essential roles of reputation, innovation, and knowledge in enhancing the performance of MSMEs in the orange economy.

    Voces en el silencio
(Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, 2023-11-13)
This paper explores the effects of hospitality rites and the co-creation of common spaces as a means to achieve transitional justice in Peru, 20 years after the 1980–2000 internal armed conflict. It describes a tea ceremony in La Hoyada, a place used by the Army as a clandestine burial ground. A foreign act of hospitality breaks the temporality of the site; mindful actions create silence, and the voices of people are better heard. This work describes the development of an incipient methodology, an intimate language of presence, and how video recordings of participants’ testimonies captured the feelings arising in a one-time silent event.
