- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Export performance of KIBS from a perspective of innovation, digitization and differentiated knowledge bases: Evidence from Peru(Servicio Central Publicaciones. Gobierno vasco, 2022-01-01)The study analyzes the export performance of Peruvian KIBS in terms of their digitization, innovation results and knowledge bases differentiated by KIBS subsectors (technological, professional and creative). Different non-linear probability logit models were estimated using the 2019 National Business Survey. It was verified that, among digital capabilities, only those associated with productive uses of ICTs were found to have a positive relationship with export performance, as well as organizational innovation. However, when considering KIBS subsectors with different knowledge bases, it is observed that innovation has heterogeneous results on export performance regardless of the inclusion of digitization as a determinant. The findings suggest for policy design to consider that there are particular drivers of innovation in certain KIBS subsectors. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Unsolicited versus solicited public partnership proposals: Is there a trade-off between innovation and competition?(Institute of Public Finance, 2024-01-01)Unsolicited proposals (UPs) are a modality of public private partnership (PPP) that is increasingly being used to attract private investors and operators to provide innovative solutions to public projects, notably in infrastructure. In most countries that expressly regulate UPs, the PPP tenders establish asymmetric conditions that favour UP proponents over other potential participants, with the aim of incentivising the presentation of innovative project solutions. The present study formally evaluates the conditions under which a competition/innovation trade-off may arise. We find that UPs can offer welfare-improving solutions compared with solicited proposals (SPs) only in exceptional circumstances. In addition, we find no robust evidence to either confirm the trade-off between innovation and competition in PPP tenders, or to indicate that UPs lead to welfare-enhancing solutions that could not be achieved under conventional SPs. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The Effects of Innovations on Peruvian Companies’ Sales: The Mediating Role of KIBS(Elsevier BV, 2023-10-09)Companies increasingly embrace open business-to-business innovation. In this context, knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) play a crucial role as they can provide services and know-how to companies. As comparisons of digital innovation in Latin American companies are scarce, a more in-depth study is required of the role that KIBS plays in their digital innovation. This study therefore investigates the impact of KIBS and the implementation of innovations, including digital ones, on the sales of companies. Utilizing a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), we scrutinize data from 959 companies in Peru. The findings reveal that internally implemented innovations do not have a statistically significant direct effect on sales. However, outsourcing KIBS emerges as a positive mediator in this relationship. Specifically, we find that companies that subcontract those services are more likely to implement innovations and to achieve a positive impact on their sales in the short-term. Despite the opportunities that digital innovation brings, its direct effect on companies’ sales still needs to be improved, especially for manufacturing companies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Assessing technological strategies and innovation in South American manufacturing firms' performance: the role of women managers(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2026-06-30)This study aims to examine how technological strategies and innovation, as well as the women managers, relate with firm performance in South American manufacturing firms. Design/methodology/approach The data set used in the study includes information for 1,712 manufacturing firms across seven South American countries for 2017. A series of regression models estimated via OLS was computed to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings The core findings indicate that technological strategies – internal R&D spending and technology licensing – are positively correlated with firm performance. On the contrary, among the sampled firms, product innovation is positively correlated to profit levels, whereas process innovation is not. In addition, while firms with a greater proportion of women in middle manager positions exhibit substantially higher performance levels, having a woman as a top manager has not. Research limitations/implications Policymakers should support the development of balanced innovation strategies that combine R&D with technology acquisition, while promoting greater inclusion of women in management teams, particularly in SMEs where external sourcing is more impactful. The cross-sectional design of the study limits causal inference; future research should conduct longitudinal and multi-industry studies to explore the tested relationships in dynamic contexts with evolving learning and human capital contingencies. Practical implications Managers should adopt more balanced “make-or-buy” innovation strategies, according to the size of the firm. Women at the middle manager level improve strategic innovation execution, highlighting the need for more inclusive organizational structures in Latin American firms. These insights can guide strategic investments and human resource practices to enhance performance outcomes. Originality/value This study makes a significant contribution to the strategic management literature in three key ways. First, it demonstrates the complementarity of internal and external technological strategies in emerging settings. Second, it highlights distinct performance associations of product versus process innovation, revealing underexplored bottlenecks in process implementation and new product commercialization. Finally, this research offers novel insights into how women at different managerial levels are related to firm performance.
