The occupation of peri-urban areas in the eight largest Amazonian cities is studied, along with its impact on forest conservation, in order to identify conditions associated with greater or lesser loss of peri-urban forests. For this purpose, a comparative analysis of demographic and spatial indicators is conducted, as well as a spatial analysis of recent urban growth over forested areas. Furthermore, challenges for the conservation of peri-urban forests are discussed based on key territorial dynamics and existing mechanisms for territorial planning and management. It is identified that the greater pressure from urban growth on peri-urban forests is mainly linked to migratory processes and regional economic dynamics related to mining and tourism activities. Likewise, the trend towards reduced population and housing density in new expansion areas, along with an increase in the real estate supply for secondary residences, poses a threat to sustainability. Peri-urban roads concentrate deforestation areas and future urban expansion, highlighting the need to enhance mechanisms for environmental impact assessment of road infrastructure and focus efforts on sustainable land management measures in these zones.

There are conservatively 9.6 million deforested hectares in the Peruvian Amazon. Out of them only 1.9 million support crops and livestock produced each year. The remaining ones, that is four hectares out of every five, is underused or abandoned and partly degraded. It is also known that each hectare in agricultural production produces one-third to one-half of what it could if well-known agricultural techniques were applied. However, deforestation continues at an increasing rate, with 190,000 ha of forests destroyed in 2020. Part of the problem is lack of technical and credit assistance for producers, as well as disorderly construction of roads that encourage deforestation. However, the main obstacle is that most of the deforestation is informal and occupies lands classified as suitable for forestry that cannot be granted as property by law and in which mid- and longterm investments are not made for that reason. Therefore, legalizing ownership of around seven million deforested hectares is proposed to stop deforestation. These are already occupied and it is technically, economically, and sustainably feasible to produce crops in them, applying proven strategies such as agroforestry, permanent crops, and reforestation.

This article provides a narrative synthesis of the academic literature on coca cultivation and illegal mining in the Peruvian Amazon. Through secondary sources, it analyzes the expansion of these illicit economies into the eastern Amazon. In addition, the article presents and discusses four myths about illicit economies prevalent in public debate and the media, which prevent an understanding of the complexity behind these phenomena. The myths revolve around i) a full understanding of the extent and distribution of coca cultivation and illegal mining, ii) the existence of a direct relationship between illicit economies and violence, iii) the role of indigenous peoples in the expansion of these activities and, finally, iv) the absence or limited presence of the State in these contexts. Based on a narrative review of the literature, this article uses the findings of recent empirical evidence to question the validity of these myths. The article concludes with research conclusions and recommendations for the study of illicit economies.

The objective of this article is to describe and analyze the productive characteristics and the corresponding environmental impact of the small and medium extensive cattle ranching practiced by colonists-mestizos and settlers belonging to the Shuar ethnic group in the Morona canton, located in the Ecuadorian Amazon. It is undisputable that there are forms of extensive livestock farming that are more sustainable than others, but we believe that the volume of land cleared is a problem that must be addressed. This production system is based on the movement of cattle between pastures on a farm due, among other things, to the low nutritional potential of the gramalote grass. This activity generates deforestation in large extensions of land. Among the factors that accentuate such levels of deforestation are, on the one hand, the larger size of the agricultural units and the need to compensate for the loss in the nutritional potential of the pastures and, onthe other hand, the chrematistic perception of the forests. Extensive livestockfarming, especially among the colonists, has shown a great capacity for resilience over the last forty years. This is despite fluctuations in urbandemand for meat and its environmental impact on the forest. Cattle ranchers in the region have maintained cattle ranching as an important source of income, a capitalization mechanism, a viable activity in a context of relative labor scarcity, and as a means of obtaining social status in a frontier context. In short, as a way of reproducing their family economy.

Long read, high-coverage reference genome of the Nymphalid butterfly Catonephele acontius (Nymphalidae: Biblidinae)
(Genetics Society of America, 2026-07-02)
BACKGROUND: Catonephele acontius (Nymphalidae:Biblidinae:Epicalinii) is a butterfly species with a wide distribution across the Neotropics including the Amazon. Here, we present a long-read high-coverage reference genome for this species to serve as a genomic resource for future studies on Biblidinae butterflies, a group that is the subject of ongoing studies of seasonal adaptation under climate change. RESULTS: We used PacBio HiFi and Isoseq reads to generate a highly contiguous and well-annotated reference genome. Five libraries were constructed, four using RNA from different tissues and one using High Molecular Weight (HMW) DNA from a wild-caught female. The DNA was sequenced using PacBio HiFi technology and the RNA was sequenced using long read PacBio IsoSeq technology. 20Gb of raw HiFi data was generated and assembled to an initial size of 520.7Mb (39x homozygous coverage) in 90 contigs. The assembly was then polished and decontaminated into 40 contigs with an N50 of 19.927Mb (BUSCO completeness: 99.0%, duplication 0.5%, fragmentation 0.7% and missing 0.3%). Final assembly size was 519.2Mb. Repeats were annotated, showing that the genome consisted of 40.4% transposable elements. IsoSeq transcriptome data from antennae, leg, ovary and digestive tissue was then used to structurally and functionally annotate gene models for the softmasked genome, uncovering ∼18,500 genes, with 70% of them given functional annotation. CONCLUSIONS: This reference assembly joins many published genomes in the Nymphalidae family but represents one of the first high-quality genomes from the Biblidinae subfamily. It provides a valuable resource to study the evolution of plastic and seasonal traits and will help investigate the genetic processes that may influence this species responses to rapid climate change.
