Measurements of jet quenching using semi-inclusive hadron+jet distributions in pp and central Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV
    (American Physical Society, 2024-07-01)
The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high pT) charged hadron, in pp and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN=5.02 TeV. The large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions is corrected using a data-driven statistical approach which enables precise measurement of recoil jet distributions over a broad range in pT,chjet and jet resolution parameter R. Recoil jet yields are reported for R=0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7<pT,chjet<140 GeV/c and π/2<Δφ<π, where Δφ is the azimuthal angular separation between hadron trigger and recoil jet. The low-pT,chjet reach of the measurement explores unique phase space for studying jet quenching, the interaction of jets with the quark-gluon plasma generated in high-energy nuclear collisions. Comparison of pT,chjet distributions from pp and central Pb-Pb collisions probes medium-induced jet energy loss and intra-jet broadening, while comparison of their acoplanarity distributions explores in-medium jet scattering and medium response. The measurements are compared to theoretical calculations incorporating jet quenching.

System-size dependence of the hadronic rescattering effect at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
    (American Physical Society, 2024-01-01)
The first measurements of K∗(892)0 resonance production as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in Xe-Xe collisions at sNN=5.44 TeV and pp collisions ats=5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector are presented. The resonance is reconstructed at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) using the hadronic decay channel K∗0 →K±π∓. Measurements of transverse-momentum integrated yield, mean transverse-momentum, nuclear modification factor of K∗0, and yield ratios of resonance to stable hadron (K∗0/K) are compared across different collision systems (pp, p-Pb, Xe-Xe, and Pb-Pb) at similar collision energies to investigate how the production of K∗0 resonances depends on the size of the system formed in these collisions. The hadronic rescattering effect is found to be independent of the size of colliding systems and mainly driven by the produced charged-particle multiplicity, which is a proxy of the volume of produced matter at the chemical freeze-out. In addition, the production yields of K∗0 in Xe-Xe collisions are utilized to constrain the dependence of the kinetic freeze-out temperature on the system size using the hadron resonance gas-partial chemical equilibrium model.

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle intra-jet properties in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV
    (Springer Nature, 2024-10-01)
The first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton–proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged-particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at center-of-mass energy s = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region (|η|<0.9) using the sequential recombination anti-kT algorithm with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the transverse momentum (pT) interval 5–110 GeV/c. The high-multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintillator detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet pT in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation function variables zch and ξch are measured for different jet-pT intervals. Jet-pT independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-zch values. The observed “hump-backed plateau” structure in the ξch distribution indicates suppression of low-pT particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmentation probability of low-zch particles accompanied by a suppression of high-zch particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more prominent for low-pT jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet pT. These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation.

Pseudorapidity Densities of Charged Particles with Transverse Momentum Thresholds in pp Collisions at s = 5.02 and 13 TeV
    (American Physical Society, 2023-10-01)
The pseudorapidity density of charged particles with minimum transverse momentum (pT) thresholds of 0.15, 0.5, 1, and 2 GeV/c is measured in pp collisions at the center of mass energies of s=5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. The study is carried out for inelastic collisions with at least one primary charged particle having a pseudorapidity (η) within ±0.8 and pT larger than the corresponding threshold. In addition, measurements without pT-thresholds are performed for inelastic and nonsingle-diffractive events as well as for inelastic events with at least one charged particle having |η|<1 in pp collisions at s=5.02 TeV for the first time at the LHC. These measurements are compared to the pythia 6, pythia 8, and epos-lhc models. In general, the models describe the η dependence of particle production well. However, discrepancies are observed for the highest transverse momentum threshold (pT>2 GeV/c), highlighting the importance of such measurements for tuning event generators. The new measurements agree within uncertainties with results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments obtained at s=13 TeV.

Measurement of Electrons from Beauty-Hadron Decays in pp and Pb-Pb Collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV
    (American Physical Society, 2023-09-01)
The production of electrons from beauty-hadron decays was measured at midrapidity in proton-proton (pp) and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon pair sNN = 5.02 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the LHC. The cross section measured in pp collisions in the transverse momentum interval 2<pT<8GeV/c was compared with models based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. The yield in the 10% most central Pb-Pb collisions, measured in the interval 2<pT<26GeV/c, was used to compute the nuclear modification factor RAA, extrapolating the pp reference cross section to pT larger than 8 GeV/c. The measured RAA shows significant suppression of the yield of electrons from beauty-hadron decays at high pT and does not show a significant dependence above 8GeV/c within uncertainties. The results are described by several theoretical models based on different implementations of the interaction of heavy quarks with a quark-gluon plasma, which predict a smaller energy loss for beauty quarks compared to light and charm quarks.

Inclusive Photon Production at Forward Rapidities in pp and p–Pb Collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV
    (Institute for Ionics, 2023-07-01)
A study of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of inclusive photons measured in pp and p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision of sNN=5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector in the forward pseudorapidity region 2.3 <ηlab< 3.9 is presented. Measurements in p–Pb collisions are reported for two beam configurations in which the directions of the proton and lead ion beam were reversed. The pseudorapidity distributions in p–Pb collisions are obtained for seven centrality classes which are defined based on different event activity estimators, i.e., the charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity as well as the energy deposited in a calorimeter at beam rapidity. The inclusive photon multiplicity distributions for both pp and p–Pb collisions are described by double negative binomial distributions. The pseudorapidity distributions of inclusive photons are compared to those of charged particles at midrapidity in pp collisions and for different centrality classes in p–Pb collisions. The results are compared to predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators. None of the generators considered in this paper reproduces the inclusive photon multiplicity distributions in the reported multiplicity range. The pseudorapidity distributions are, however, better described by the same generators.

Constraining the K¯N Coupled Channel Dynamics Using Femtoscopic Correlations at the LHC
    (Institute for Ionics, 2023-04-01)
The interaction of K - with protons is characterised by the presence of several coupled channels, systems like K ¯ n and π Σ with a similar mass and the same quantum numbers as the K - p state. The strengths of these couplings to the K - p system are of crucial importance for the understanding of the nature of the Λ (1405) resonance and of the attractive K - p strong interaction. In this article, we present measurements of the K - p correlation functions in relative momentum space obtained in pp collisions at s=13 Te, in p–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 Te, and (semi)peripheral Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 Te. The emitting source size, composed of a core radius anchored to the K + p correlation and of a resonance halo specific to each particle pair, varies between 1 and 2 fm in these collision systems. The strength and the effects of the K ¯ n and π Σ inelastic channels on the measured K - p correlation function are investigated in the different colliding systems by comparing the data with state-of-the-art models of chiral potentials. A novel approach to determine the conversion weights ω , necessary to quantify the amount of produced inelastic channels in the correlation function, is presented. In this method, particle yields are estimated from thermal model predictions, and their kinematic distribution from blast-wave fits to measured data. The comparison of chiral potentials to the measured K - p interaction indicates that, while the π Σ – K - p dynamics is well reproduced by the model, the coupling to the K ¯ n channel in the model is currently underestimated.
