Rising strong: Peruvian women entrepreneurs’ journey through the COVID-19 pandemic
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2024-11-25)
This study explores the challenges faced by Peruvian women entrepreneurs during COVID-19 pandemic, their emotional responses, and coping mechanisms. Structured interviews with 51 women entrepreneurs were analysed using thematic analysis, framed by social cognitive theory. Seven main challenges emerged: disruptions to operations, financial instability, health and safety concerns, business model adaptation, workforce management, external factors, and emotional impacts. Resilience and adaptability were demonstrated through community support, digital tools, and innovative resource management. Findings suggest the need for tailored financial support, enhanced digital literacy, robust support networks, mental health resources, and adaptive leadership strategies. Policy recommendations include the development of gender-sensitive policies and simplified regulatory procedures. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of women's entrepreneurial journeys during a global crisis, offering insights into unique challenges and adaptive strategies to inform future support systems and policies for women entrepreneurs in developing countries.

The Role of the Mass Vaccination Programme in Combating the COVID-19 Pandemic: An LSTM-Based Analysis of COVID-19 Confirmed Cases
    (Elsevier Ltd, 2023-03-01)
The COVID-19 virus has impacted all facets of our lives. As a global response to this threat, vaccination programmes have been initiated and administered in numerous nations. The question remains, however, as to whether mass vaccination programmes result in a decrease in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. In this study, we aim to predict the future number of COVID-19 confirmed cases for the top ten countries with the highest number of vaccinations in the world. A well-known Deep Learning method for time series analysis, namely, the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, is applied as the prediction method. Using three evaluation metrics, i.e., Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), we found that the model built by using LSTM networks could give a good prediction of the future number and trend of COVID-19 confirmed cases in the considered countries. Two different scenarios are employed, namely: ‘All Time’, which includes all historical data; and ‘Before Vaccination’, which excludes data collected after the mass vaccination programme began. The average MAPE scores for the ‘All Time’ and ‘Before Vaccination’ scenarios are 5.977% and 10.388%, respectively. Overall, the results show that the mass vaccination programme has a positive impact on decreasing and controlling the spread of the COVID-19 disease in those countries, as evidenced by decreasing future trends after the programme was implemented.

Empowering resilience: navigating challenges faced by women entrepreneurs in Taiwan amidst COVID-19
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2026-06-23)
This study investigates the challenges faced by Taiwanese women entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their emotional responses and the strategies they employed to cope with these challenges. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through structured interviews with 50 women entrepreneurs and analyzed using thematic analysis, framed by social cognitive theory and the resource-based view. Findings Seven major challenges were identified: financial instability, government policies and restrictions, disruptions to business operations, supply chain disruptions, communication issues with clients, difficulties in complying with health and safety measures and workforce disruption. The emotional responses ranged from feelings of helplessness and frustration to resilience and hope, which in turn informed the adoption of various adaptive strategies. Research limitations/implications The small sample size of 50 participants limits the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, qualitative research relies on the researchers' interpretation of data, which may introduce subjectivity and bias. Practical implications The lessons learned from women entrepreneurs during the COVID-19 pandemic highlight the resilience, adaptability and innovative strategies employed by women entrepreneurs during challenging times. Originality/value The findings highlight the resilience and innovative capabilities of women entrepreneurs in crisis contexts and underscore the need for tailored support mechanisms, including financial assistance, digital literacy training and mental health resources. Policy recommendations emphasize the importance of gender-sensitive policies and simplified regulatory procedures. The findings also contribute to advancing scholarship on gender equality (SDG 5) and decent work and economic growth (SDG 8).
