God's existence, an obvious fact in Latin America?
    (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, 2020-01-01)

Lived religion and religious market theory: A promising dialogue. A study of two Peruvian Pentecostal churches: Movimiento Misionero Mundial (MMM) and Monte de Oración (MO)
(Universidad de los Andes, Bogota Colombia, 2022-01-01)
Abstract: To counteract the absence of paradigms that explain Latin American religious transformations from their own models, this article proposes an exploratory dialogue between two interpretative frameworks assumed to be antagonistic: the religious market theory developed in the capitalist system and the lived religion approach. The reflections are illustrated in two different cases from the broad Peruvian Pentecostal spectrum: Monte de Oración, an independent church, a family business located in a Lima slum, and the World Missionary Movement, a transnational megachurch of Puerto Rican origin with pan-Peruvian aspirations. The lived religion approach leads to an enchanted worldview outside the logic of separation into spheres. It therefore allows the theory of the religious market to be adapted to an environment that continues to function traditionally as a family business or farm, despite having some of the characteristics of a globalized market. This approach also reveals that attachment to certain traditions and the existential quest in changing contexts -elements apparently alien to commercial logic- end up shaping a dynamic market. These theories lead us towards the little studied and debated popular Pentecostalism, which destroys certain customs, reinterprets others, and creates new formulas. This religious movement manages to combine an attractive local rootedness for its potential members with international connections that legitimize it in a society in transition.

Pragmatic and strategic religious alliances in times of pluralization, the case of Peru
    (Universidad Nacional de Colombia::will be referenced::ROR-ID, 2022-01-01)

Bible, environment and Christian churches: A reflection from Peru

The Catholic Church in fragile democracies: An influencer, a moral guide, or a judge? A case study from the Peruvian Catholic Church
(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-03-01)
This paper navigates the complex roles that the Catholic Church assumes in fragile democracies, exploring whether it functions as an influencer, a moral guide, or a judge in shaping public policies and societal values using the Peruvian context as a focal reference. The authors begin by providing an overview of the global religious landscape, highlighting the diverse and polarized trends within the ecclesial institution. In the second part of this paper, this study delves into the homilies of two influential Peruvian prelates, Mgr. Cipriani and Mgr. Castillo, representing opposing theological currents within the Catholic Church, offering a pertinent exploration of how religious institutions engage with evolving international and local trends in the context of democracy.

    Masculinity Challenged?
(Utrecht University Library Open Access Journals (Publishing Services), 2023-09-05)
This article aims to present some of the results of our investigation on prisoners’ conversion into Evangelical churches, amongst (ex)convicts in Piura, a Peruvian Northern city and in Lima. Our objective is to research highly debated and understudied topics about this type of process of conversion: whether it is an individual process or a strategy to gain protection from the church in a dangerous surrounding (Algranti)? Which changes do (ex)convicts undergo through conversion, especially in ways of enacting virile masculinity, a very important feature of gang members and of Evangelical churches? Many (ex)convicts’ religious careers oscillate between extremes, from delinquency to strict church discipline, until some of them may stabilize. We argue that in spite of conversion and apparent changes in behaviors, the social religious imaginary (Morello), especially in terms of ideals of masculinity, remains almost unchanged, based on relations of power, fights and domination. (Ex)convicts pass from a “perverse” version of masculinity to a “virtuous” one (Fuller). For them, the ideal of femininity remains rooted in submissive women.

In the Same Spirit. Looking for Political Legitimacy: Conservative Christian Alliances in Contemporary Peru
    (Springer Science+Business Media, 2025-01-01)
The relationship between religion and politics in recent decades has seen new actors, new strategies, and new objectives. In a global scenario marked by the empowerment of the political far right and the decline of democracy, the emergence of authoritarian religious leaders in politics stands out. In the last decade, this phenomenon has been evident in several Latin American countries, including Peru. This study analyzes the relationship between the political and religious fields, emphasizing the convergence of Catholic and Evangelical actors whose practices and discourses seem to be driven by the same "spirit." Although the roots of such relationships lie in the 1990s, this study focuses on the last decade. Faced with a severe political crisis and deep distrust of social institutions, far-right political leaders seek to regain legitimacy in the religious sphere, whose institutions are the only ones that still have significant credibility. Conservative religious authoritarianism in Peruvian politics has a serious impact on the weakening of democracy. This article examines this phenomenon of de-democratization linked to the erosion of fundamental elements of classical democracy. Theological resources and technical effects of new media are reviewed to understand their effect on transforming political adversaries into illegitimate "enemies." The study considers the importance of religion for the majority of the population, the specific weight of Catholics and Evangelicals, and the effect of the recent election of Pope Leo XIV on the balance of power—progressives versus conservatives—in Catholic leadership.

    (SAGE Publishing, 2025-06-01)
This article analyzes the official position of Peruvian religious institutions, particularly Pentecostal ones, in response to the health emergency of COVID-19 (2020–2021), in the context characterized by precarity and multiple deficiencies. Using netnography and an ethnographic case study method, we examine the reactions of various churches. While a significant sector of the religious field, generally the most institutionalized, remained officially confident in the scientific approach assumed by the government to confront the pandemic, others, inspired by transnational connections related to North American conservative currents and promoting conspiracy theories and eschatological views, have introduced more ambiguous, even dissenting, discourses. Our analysis shows that diversity exists in the most structured institutions such as the Catholic Church and some dogmatic independent churches. Many members maintain their independence and do not follow the leaders' instructions.
