Shall we kill again? Violence and intimacy among the Awajun “new leaders” in the northeastern Peruvian frontier
    (FLACSO Ecuador, 2021-05-01)
In societies living at the margins of the State, interpersonal relationships and the use of power, as well as competition dynamics, are often similar among different groups in spite of preexisting differences in access to economic resources, moral authority and personal prestige. From this point of departure the present article undertakes an ethno historic analysis which attempts to illuminate changes affecting the Alto Marañon (Peru) Awajun people, between the years 1950 and 1970. The socio-cultural transformation this indigenous group was forced to undergo in order to attain membership in the wider national society, is described. Using the tools which ethno history and the anthropology of affectivity provide, and paying particular attention to the topic of the building of the “heroic body”, the present text focuses on how Awajun society suffered significant changes regarding the of the use of force and of the symbolic management of violence, leading to the assimilation of new styles of indigenous leadership. All this occurs as a result of experiences resulting from close contact with the earliest agents of government authority to show up in their native homelands: evangelical missionaries and the army. This process led the Awajun to the development of unprecedented forms of “indigenous leadership”, resulting from the assimilation, convergence and reworking of cultural material incorporated during their contacts with religious and military personnel.

Over the last fifty years, indigenous leadership has undergone a series of important transformations. This trajectory has been dominated by a process of merging and reworking different models of leadership fromlocal, national and global contexts. In all of this, the creative use of visual tools and mass media has played a fundamental role. Within the Peruvian political scenario, the figure of Alberto Pizango Chota, Shawi leader ofthe Aidesep organisation, has set an important precedent in this regard. His case is an exemplary field of study on the extraordinary possibilities of exhibition, the use of images, the fabrication of aesthetics and the elaboration of new expressive codes. These are all elements that contemporary Amazonian leadership can propose and disseminate through digital technologies and relations with the mass media.

Peru is one of the countries most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, where the health crisis quickly provoked a serious socio-economic and political crisis. The fragile Peruvian state was unable to build an effective response to this multifaceted crisis, in this context, we defend the hypothesis that forms of affectivity, solidarity, memory and collective resilience related to the recent past (1980-1990) were reactivated in many rural and urban communities of the country. Based on a qualitative methodology, this article questions the role that the collective memory played in reactivating historical forms of community resilience at the local level. Based on three empirical cases (the rondas campesinas, the Covid commandos and the ollas comunes), we analyze how the memories of past violence and crises, as well as the responses to them, have offered original tools in certain communities to elaborate effective responses of resilience during the first months of the global pandemic. In this sense, we reflect and draw attention to the potential of setting up agency and resilience based on collective memory, which is framed is by the diversity of the cultural and local experiences.
