    The influence of ethnic identity on Peruvian quinoa consumption: a top Lima and modern metropolitan Lima approach
    (BioMed Central Ltd, 2022-12-01)
    The International Year of Quinoa (IYQ) (2013) showcased quinoa to the world and generated a rapid expansion in international demand for quinoa. It also increased the level of consumption in Peru. Peruvian ethnic identity reflects the food culture of origin. This research aims to determine the relationship between ethnic identity and other Theory of Planned Behavior factors on quinoa consumption intention and frequency of consumers in Top Lima and Modern Metropolitan Lima, Peru. A survey of 381 respondents was conducted between April and September 2017, and structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. Contrary to expectations, intention and frequency of consumption of quinoa were negatively affected by “ethnic identity” (p < 0.05). This result is related to the promotion by the IYQ and Marca Perú (brand name Peru) and the gastronomic boom.

    Finite mixture of Birnbaum–Saunders distributions using the k-Bumps algorithm
    (Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022-06-01)
    Mixture models have received a great deal of attention in statistics due to the wide range of applications found in recent years. This paper discusses a finite mixture model of Birnbaum–Saunders distributions with G components, which is an important supplement to that developed by Balakrishnan et al. (J Stat Plann Infer 141:2175–2190, 2011) who considered a model with two components. Our proposal enables the modeling of proper multimodal scenarios with greater flexibility for a model with two or more components, where a partitional clustering method, named k-bumps, is used as an initialization strategy in the proposed EM algorithm to the maximum likelihood estimates of the mixture parameters. Moreover, the empirical information matrix is derived analytically to account for standard error, and bootstrap procedures for testing hypotheses about the number of components in the mixture are implemented. Finally, we perform simulation studies to evaluate the results and analyze two real dataset to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed method.

    Factors related to quinoa consumption in Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic
    (Universidad Nacional de Colombia::will be referenced::ROR-ID, 2022-09-30)
    Quinoa is a traditional food grain that originated in the Peruvian Andean region. The United Nations declared 2013 to be the International Year of Quinoa (iyq). This official launch had a great impact around the world. On the contrary, it had minor impact on the consumption of quinoa in Peru, which remained relatively steady in the following years. However, the covid-19 pandemic raised concerns about nutrition and health among consumers. Therefore, this study seeks to analyze quinoa consumption in Peru during the covid-19 pandemic. Primary data were collected between September 2020 and August 2021 in Lima Metropolitan Area, Peru. Exploratory factor analysis with varimax rotation was performed for data analysis, and logistic binomial analysis was then conducted to consolidate the hypothesis of this study. The main outcomes identified were that (i) current quinoa consumers in Peru ate this food even before the iyq; (ii) consumers who are concerned about their health and nutrition needs increased quinoa consumption during the pandemic; (iii) women showed a higher probability of daily to weekly trend in quinoa consumption; and (iv) people with the highest income have more probability of purchasing food at supermarkets than others with less income. The findings of this study can shed some light on consumers’ expectations and perceptions regarding quinoa consumption behavior during covid-19.

    The impact of the Peruvian Ollas Comunes´ (OCs) resource barriers on vulnerable beneficiaries
    (Taylor & Francis, 2025-08-27)
    Peru has the highest food insecurity in South America. Ollas Comunes (OCs) are self-managed food pantries organized by mothers. The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of the OCs' resource barriers on their beneficiaries. Data were collected from 445 main OCs in Metropolitan Lima between 2020 and 2021. A negative binomial regression approach was applied to food rations and the number of children, elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic disease who attended the OCs. The outcomes may be used by governments to enhance the base framework of OCs to improve the food security of their beneficiaries.

    Finite Mixtures of Birnbaum-Saunders Distributions Under a Skew Scale-Mixture Framework: Accepted April 2026
    (2026-04-08)
    We introduce finite mixtures of Birnbaum–Saunders distributions generated from the scale-mixture-of-skew-normal family (FM–BS–SMSN) to model positive data with asymmetry, multimodality, heterogeneous tails, and latent heterogeneity. The class includes skew-normal, skew-t, skew-slash, and skew-contaminated normal components. Under a common mixing parameter, we establish identifiability of minimal mixtures and, for two components, derive a criterion for strict unimodality. We develop an ECM algorithm and compute standard errors using the outer-product-of-gradients approximation. Simulations show satisfactory finite-sample performance. An application to NHANES BMI data indicates that the FM–BS–ST model provides the best fit, with the BIC favoring two components.
