Context matters: teaching styles and basic psychological needs predicting flourishing and perfectionism in university music students
    (Frontiers Media S.A., 2021-03-02)
Professional musicians are expected to perform at a very high level of proficiency. Many times, this high standard is associated with perfectionism, which has been shown to prompt both adaptive and maladaptive motivational dynamics and outcomes among music students. The question about how perfectionism interplays with motivational dynamics in music students is still unanswered and research within this line is scarce, especially in Latin America. In the light of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between the perceptions of motivational context (teachers' motivating styles: autonomy supportive or controlling), basic psychological needs (satisfaction/frustration), perfectionism (adaptive/maladaptive), and flourishing in University music students from Lima, Peru (N = 149; mean age = 20.68, SD = 3.03; 71% men). We performed a path analysis testing a model in which motivational teaching styles predicted both, perfectionism and flourishing via need satisfaction and frustration. The model's fit indices were ideal [χ2 (7, N = 143) = 7.48, p = 0.300, CFI = 0.998, TLI = 0.992, RMSEA = 0.021, SRMR =0.040]. In this model, perceived autonomy supportive style predicted need satisfaction positively and need frustration negatively; perceived controlling teaching style did not predict need satisfaction nor frustration. In turn, need satisfaction positively predicted adaptive perfectionism (i.e., high standards) and flourishing; whereas, need frustration predicted maladaptive perfectionism (i.e., discrepancy). These results shed light on the relevance of perfectionism in the psychology of higher music education students. Lastly, we highlight the importance of autonomy support in fostering adaptive high standards and flourishing in music learning.

The role of strength-based parenting, posttraumatic stress, and event exposure on posttraumatic growth in flood survivors
    (American Psychological Association, 2022-04-25)
The present study examined the role of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), strength-based parenting (SBP), and event exposure on posttraumatic growth (PTG) in Peruvian flood survivors. METHOD: After contacting local authorities, 1,077 adult participants were surveyed 1 year after the flood. Correlation, moderation, and mediation analyses were conducted to determine relationships between variables. RESULTS: Flood survivors experienced both PTSS and PTG. Additionally, event exposure directly facilitated PTG. Further, SBP influenced PTG both directly and by its role in reducing PTSS. Finally, higher levels of SBP aided individuals in converting PTSS into PTG. CONCLUSIONS: Favorable psychological outcomes following floods are not uncommon even for those with high levels of stress or exposure. Individual- and community-level interventions should leverage facilitating factors such as SBP to promote growth outcomes such as PTG. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved).

The type of motivation does matter for university preparation
(Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Campinas, 2022-01-01)
Using Self-Determination Theory, the relationship between motivation (autonomous and controlled), academic self-efficacy, test anxiety, life satisfaction and academic achievement was studied in a group of pre-university students from Lima-Peru. A total of 252 students of both sexes with ages between 16 and 30 years (Mage = 17.69) were assessed. Correlational analyses showed the expected relationships among the studied variables. The path analysis performed gave evidence of the fulfillment of the hypotheses proposed for this study since academic self-efficacy mediated the relationship between autonomous motivation and academic achievement and life satisfaction; also test anxiety mediated the relationship between controlled motivation and academic achievement and life satisfaction. The implications of these empirical findings are discussed in relation to pre-university education in Peru.

Psychometric properties of the Post-traumatic Growth Inventory in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: Bifactor model invariance
(Asoc. Espanola de Psicologia Clinica y Psicopatologia, 2024-01-01)
The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI; Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1996) assesses growth experiences following traumatic events, such as those experienced during the COVID19 pandemic. However, its factor structure is still under debate, suggesting that a bifactor model might best represent the structure of the test. This study examined the psychometric properties of this instrument with a sample of 615 Peruvian adults. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed that a bifactor model, which included a general factor and five specific factors, proved to be the best fit to the data (SBSχ2 (df)= 909.26(184), CFI =1, RMSEA =.066, SRMR =.046). We found evidence of configural invariance between the group that reports deceased relatives by COVID19 and the group that does not. In addition, adequate internal consistency indices were found. This study supports adequate psychometric properties of the PTGI.

    Teaching Around the Globe
    (Oxford University Press, 2023-07-18)
Teaching is global, so the purpose of this chapter is to provide an international perspective on classroom instruction. In the first part, the authors summarize findings from two international investigations (conducted by others). The first is a video observational study involving eight nations reporting their typical teaching practices in terms of classroom management, social-emotional support, and quality of instruction. The second is a survey-based study involving 19 nations in which teachers self-reported their job satisfaction and teaching efficacy. In the second part, the authors invite educators from 19 different countries to participate in a virtual roundtable discussion to communicate what is special about teaching in their particular nation. Each educator answered this question: What can the rest of the world learn from what teachers in your nation do so well? The roundtable participants highlight their teachers’ work ethic, engagement in professional learning communities, commitment to inclusion and democratic education, and opportunities for both autonomy and collaboration.

The scientific literature consistently demonstrates the benefits for physical and mental health obtained from activities in natural environments instead of urban ones. Such is the case of surfing, a sport practiced in contact with nature. This study uses the psychological needs theory from self-determination theory (Ryan & Deci, 2017) to explain why surfing is so beneficial. This study investigated the relationship between contact with nature, basic psychological needs (satisfaction and frustration), vitality, and negative affect in 236 amateur athletes of various surfing modalities (bodyboard, longboard, surfing, paddleboard, and bodysurf). The examination of the psychometric properties of the instruments showed adequate evidence of validity and reliability. Results from path analysis showed that contact with nature was associated with greater vitality and lower negative affect —the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs mediated these associations—. The article discusses these results regarding self-determination theory and its relationship with well-being and vitality.

Teachers' motivating style, students' basic psychological needs, academic reading motivation, and engagement
    (Taylor & Francis, 2025-01-01)
Students display different amounts and types of motivation for academic reading. Drawing upon self-determination theory, we examined the relationship between perceived teachers' motivating style and students' basic psychological needs, regulatory styles, and engagement around academic reading. Participants were 235 Peruvian fourth-fifth graders who completed questionnaires regarding their experiences of motivation and their teachers' perceived motivating style during visits to the school library. Students' engagement was rated by their teachers. Perceived teachers' autonomy support had a positive direct relationship with intrinsic regulation. Perceived teacher control displayed a positive indirect relationship with external regulation, mediated by students' basic needs frustration, and a direct relationship to the same outcome. Teacher control also showed a negative direct relationship with teacher-rated behavioral and agentic engagement and intrinsic regulation. Results highlight the importance of teachers' motivating styles in students' motivational experiences.
