Supply Chain Innovation and Sustainability Frontiers: A Balanced Scorecard Perspective
    (Springer, 2020-01-01)
Global trade has been growing at a steady pace since the 1950s, which has brought increasing operational challenges to supply chains. Technological advances and the “digital revolution” bring new opportunities to improve key supply chain processes in many sectors, including transportation. However, while embracing innovation, firms have to ensure that they do not lose strategic focus and that their performance measurement systems continue to evolve. This study explores how disruptive innovations in supply chain operations may produce unexpected outcomes for firms’ strategy. We analyze four examples of technological innovation in transport under a Balanced Scorecard framework. Our reflections shed light on the potential trade-offs that organizations may face between different dimensions of performance to pursue sustainable development goals.

Addressing sustainability challenges through supply chain managers’ transformative leadership behavior
    (Springer, 2021-01-01)
Sustainability concerns are far beyond individual action of the organizations or even countries. Instead, global supply chains have demonstrated their potential as powerful networks of integration, connecting the most important economic activities in the world. Nevertheless, supply chains have to rely on their leaders to achieve a proper performance, so adding a sustainability perspective on these leaders will drive to the incorporation of sustainability practices alongside supply chains at each stage and process. This chapter aims to highlight the importance of adopting a sustainability mindset for supply chains’ leaders, in order to fulfill stakeholders’ expectations regarding social concerns, environmental detriment, and economic welfare. Moreover, we discuss how a transformative leadership would be achieved, by thinking ahead of traditional supply chains’ measures such as price, quality, and speed, finding important insights from real examples. Beyond businesses and supply chain leaders, we also address the need to address sustainability issues in a systems perspective, in which we highlight the crucial role of teaching and learning.

A New Approach for Teaching and Learning Sustainability: Futures Studies Meet International Business
    (2023-07-27)
Against the backdrop of an uncertain and complex international environment that grand challenges, such as rising inequalities, climate change, and infectious diseases, have shaped, educators must be able to prepare students to be capable of tackling a multitude of upcoming global issues. Anticipatory competencies (i.e., futures literacy) could be key to navigating these multiple seas of uncertainty. Moreover, understanding the potential of futures studies and applying it to international business could help our fellow educators to equip students to navigate uncharted territories, bringing creativity and imagination to the IB classroom.

Stakeholder perspectives for business through future scenarios: The case of sustainable recovery in Peru
    (Krakow University of Economics, 2026-06-01)
Objective: This article aims to provide an overview of the stakeholders' perspectives towards the climate change-oriented recovery of businesses in Peru, contributing to moving forward the literature related to the Stakeholder Theory and Sustainable Development. Research Design & Methods: We used a qualitative approach and conducted four focus group sessions to collect data. Moreover, we used a future studies methodology to obtain structured feedback from the stakeholders regarding four plausible future scenarios for businesses in Peru. Findings: The government appears as the key actor regulating the business environment, facilitating, among others, essential policies and resources such as decentralisation, education, biodiversity, technology, alliances, and energy transition that stakeholders could build upon as well. Implications & Recommendations: Our theoretical contribution emphasises the uncertainty around the stakeholders' purposes, according to the different perspectives that we found toward a common concern. Moreover, this contribution supports stakeholder salience under crisis periods, drawing attention to redefining stakeholder priorities. Moreover, we built upon sustainable development literature, analysing how Peruvian companies can adapt and achieve resilience toward future scenarios. Contribution & Value Added: Future Studies methodology allowed us to assess how stakeholders are salient in crises towards business recovery. Peru constitutes a relevant case due to its institutional context, climate vulnerability, and socio-economic crises.
