Supply Chain Innovation and Sustainability Frontiers: A Balanced Scorecard Perspective
    (Springer, 2020-01-01)
Global trade has been growing at a steady pace since the 1950s, which has brought increasing operational challenges to supply chains. Technological advances and the “digital revolution” bring new opportunities to improve key supply chain processes in many sectors, including transportation. However, while embracing innovation, firms have to ensure that they do not lose strategic focus and that their performance measurement systems continue to evolve. This study explores how disruptive innovations in supply chain operations may produce unexpected outcomes for firms’ strategy. We analyze four examples of technological innovation in transport under a Balanced Scorecard framework. Our reflections shed light on the potential trade-offs that organizations may face between different dimensions of performance to pursue sustainable development goals.

Ferrari five: How to recover control of the traditional channel in Colombia?
    (Emerald, 2020-04-30)
Learning outcomes: The learning outcomes are as follows: to analyze host market characteristics and consumer behavior to develop sound value propositions; to distinguish the characteristics of traditional retail as opposed to the ones of modern retail; to identify the potential benefits and challenges of working with traditional retail; to discuss how informality may affect business relations; and to identify potential avenues to align divergent interests between the focal firm and traditional retailers. Case overview/synopsis: The case described the situation faced by French International Company (FICO), a leading manufacturer of cigarettes, after the acquisition of Fosforera Colombiana (FOCOSA) in Colombia. FICO aimed to leverage the leadership position of FOCOSA and of its flagship brand Ferrari Lights that possess a 60% market share. However, after just a few months, it was clear that the acquired subsidiary was not performing adequately. The financial results obtained were disastrous. To face this situation, FICO appointed as the new marketing director to Waldo Tarantini who has experienced dealing with informal markets. To be aligned to the Colombian consumption pattern of five cigarettes daily, Waldo decided to launch a new presentation of the leading brand denominated Ferrari five, a package of 5 cigarettes at COP 1000. Considering that more than 60% of the sale can be explained by traditional retail, it was mandatory to secure its participation. Nevertheless, traditional retailers obtained up to 56% margin by selling single sticks. Waldo and his team rapidly needed to craft a commercial strategy to secure the participation of traditional retailers in a market plagued by informality, smuggling products and lack of control from national authorities. Complexity academic level: The case is intended to be used at the early stages of post-graduate studies and in executive education programs addressing issues such as emerging markets, informality, the base of the pyramid, trade marketing and product launches. In particular, the case can be used in MSc in Marketing’s students, first-year MBA students or executives following short courses. The field of studies in which the case should be taught is marketing or trade marketing in particular when analyzing emerging economies. Supplementary materials: Teaching notes are available for educators only. Subject code: CSS 8: Marketing.

Exploring Enabling Factors for Innovation Outcomes. A Firm-Level Analysis
    (EAFIT University, 2020-07-28)
Major innovation research has been primarily focused on developed countries, creating a gap in the literature related to innovation processes in emerging markets, such as Latin America. Even as some studies are aimed toward this region, their approach is usually only from the standpoint of an R&D funding perspective. This paper aims to discuss the relationship between resources for innovation and sources of innovation with innovation outcomes, using a sample of Peruvian companies, which received public funds oriented to the developing of innovative activities. Results found evidence that the presence of resources for innovation and sources of innovation have a positive influence on innovation outcomes. Moreover, resources for innovation are related to non-technological innovation, with internal R&D being the most carried out by companies even when it is not related to product nor process innovation. While sources of innovation are related to product innovation, firms demonstrated an incipient use of inter-firm collaboration strategies as its sources it.

Constraints and opportunities for entrepreneurship in Peru and Chile: A discussion about institutions and social networks in Latin America
    (Universidad Católica del Norte, 2020-05-01)
Entrepreneurial activity involves many risks and challenges along its life cycle, even more when it is in its very beginning phase. New organizations have a strong necessity to find strategic and valuable resources to achieve their growth and survival while they are taking their first steps in business. In addition to this, countries’ entrepreneurship represents different opportunities like technological development or renewable energy innovations, but for Latin America it means a powerful engine for the economy, thousands of jobs and a reliable way to get rid of poverty. This paper aims to discuss how social networks can be a useful mechanism for entrepreneurs in Latin America to obtain valuable resources from external sources. The method employs a descriptive and exploratory focus, as well as an inductive approach for its conclusions. Results of the paper present different programs carried out by Chilean and Peruvian governments that promote entrepreneurial networks, and how these can be useful to the entrepreneurs’ business activities. Even when these programs need to extend their initiatives, covering a larger scope of entrepreneurs, the study concludes by focusing on the importance of networks promoted by these local institutions as a part of entrepreneurial initial operational phase under turbulent conditions, where valuable resource are scarce and the surrounding institutional environment is weak.

Crises conducting stakeholder salience: shifts in the evolution of private universities’ governance in Latin America
    (Emerald, 2021-01-01)
This study aims to build on embedded approaches to stakeholder management and examines how organizational decision-makers consider social responsibility toward proximal stakeholders in crises that encompass an entire system of stakeholder relationships. Design/methodology/approach: Within a criterion-based sample of eight Latin American private universities, this paper develops in-depth exploratory case studies to examine the prioritization of stakeholders in higher education institutions’ decision-making during the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis. Findings: Contrary to the notion that during crises organizations prioritize stakeholders that provide resources that are critical to survival, this study finds that in contextual crises stakeholder management is informed by social responsibility. In addition, the findings suggest that crises may be tipping points for changes toward mission-driven approaches to governance. Practical implications: Acknowledging the roles of social responsibility and proximity in stakeholder management during contextual crises allows for more informed governance of organizations that face disruptions in their system of stakeholder relations. Originality/value: This study contributes unique insights into the decision-maker’s prioritization of stakeholders during the COVID-19 crisis. The uncertainty associated with the emerging “new normal” allowed for an extreme test of socially embedded versus resource-oriented approaches to stakeholder management.

COVID-19 and higher education: responding to local demands and the consolidation of e-internationalization in Latin American universities
    (Emerald, 2021-10-22)
This paper aims to provide insights into the internationalization strategic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic by higher education institutions (HEIs) in Latin America. Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on information from eight leading Latin American private universities. The data were obtained from official sources such as institutional communications and university administrators. Findings: The authors identify two main issues that HEIs should consider while responding to the pandemic. First, greater attention and resource allocation to the universities' main local stakeholders can affect traditional internationalization activities. Second, a focus on revitalizing foreign partnerships and strengthening “virtual internationalization” can help maintain and eventually increase international presence. Research limitations/implications: While this study analyses how these Latin American HEIs responded during the initial stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, it is important to conduct follow-up studies to shed light on how HEIs are adapting to the COVID-19 crisis as it continues to unfold. Originality/value: This study is based on unique information gathered from leading private, not-for-profit HEIs in Latin America, which, contrary to state-owned HEIs or other private institutions in developed economies, have exhibited different means and conditions to respond to the coronavirus outbreak. Finally, the authors contribute to the literature on the internationalization of HEIs by discussing the role of a significant disruptive event on the internationalization of higher education and, particularly, business schools.
