El patriotismo de la mujer (1876) by Mercedes Cabello: Resignifications, displacement, and tension in the articulation of a feminist genealogy

Beyond naturalism and the idealized sick woman: Adela Zamudio’s “El velo de la purísima” (n.d.), and Júlia Lopes de Almeida’s “A caolha” (1903), and the representations of disease as a critical metaphor for industrial modernity in Latin American turn of t
    (Universidad Catolica Silva Henriquez, 2022-07-01)
This paper analyzes the representations of female disease and deformity in two works by Bolivian writer Adela Zamudio (1854-1928), and Brazilian writer Júlia Lopes de Almeida (1862-1934). The purpose is to delve into the different uses and resignifications of the pathological metaphor by female writers, in dialogue with modernist and decadent aesthetics, and naturalist ideology. Whereas texts framed within patriarchal modernist-decadent aesthetics and ideologies emphasized the representation of female disease as an aesthetic ideal; and whereas literary texts framed within naturalism portrayed sick female figures as culprits of social degeneration; Adela Zamudio and Júlia Lopes de Almeida depict different representations of sick women. In their works, pathological conditions and deformities are far from being deterministic features nor aesthetic ideals, but critical metaphors of an industrial modernity that condemns women to invisibility and marginality. By picturing disease as critical metaphor of industrial modernity, I read in these texts claims for women’s access to the means of production. Besides fostering more complex readings of disease in the period, I propose an intersectional reading of these works to analyze how they shed lights on the social and racial connotations that problematize hegemonic archetypes of the feminine (such as the bourgeois’ “angel of the house”) and, therefore, turn them into an exclusive privilege for women belonging to specific social classes and racial groups.

Disarticulation of slavery biopower through biopolitical linkages in Juana Paula Manso's La familia del Comendador (1860)
    (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, 2022-01-01)

Ideal female subjects vs. real desires: The visibilizations of the ethical contradictions of patriarchal projects of regeneration in Mercedes Cabello de Carbonera's Blanca Sol (1888) and Carmela Eulate Sanjurjo's La Muñeca

Aurora Cáceres’ personal album in datasets: A theoretical-critical and methodological approach to analyze the sociocultural practices of Latin American women intellectuals between centuries (1880–1925) from the digital humanities
(Academia Peruana de la Lengua, 2024-07-01)
We propose an approach to the personal album of Aurora Cáceres (1872-1958) from the digital humanities and information sciences. Through its conversion into datasets, we seek to make this complex and heterogeneous document computationally readable and to critically review it, pondering the networked contents that allow dialogues for new horizons of meaning, without ignoring the semantic and ideological value of the material supports. We hope to overcome the problem of reducing these devices to sources for the extraction of isolated data limited to intimate or depoliticized spheres. With the album, Cáceres, like other intellectuals of the inter-century period, evidenced her intervention in the public sphere and her strategies to construct a history and a memory in which she, as a subject and not as an object, plays a leading role. This work represents a methodological contribution to study this kind of sources, whose heterogeneity also implies their subordination or exclusion, given the challenges of reading, classifying and preserving them.

    (Universidad Nacional de Colombia::will be referenced::ROR-ID, 2024-06-29)
To analyze Mundial magazine’s “La página del pueblo” (LPDP) within the context of Augusto Leguía’s “Patria Nueva” and the conceptualizations about the magazine genre. Methodology: By focusing on LPDP during the magazine’s first year of circulation, we aim to delve into the problematics posed by this section, especially during a time of alleged sociopolitical opening and renewal. The disciplinary fields include: magazine studies, which provide a framework to address the materialities and understand the uniqueness of Mundial with regards to other equivalent publications in the region; history studies, to insert the themes and problems into the map of the discussions and situations of the moment; and visual culture studies, with the guidelines to analyze the written-visual frameworks and consider the section as the image-object granted to “el pueblo” silenced and violated in other sections of the magazine. Originality: There is a lack of studies about Mundial’s “La página del pueblo” or about specific sections of the magazine. The presence of relevant figures from the literary-intellectual field, such as Mariátegui, evaded concerns about a controversial publication that, despite giving a platform to intellectuals associated with a vindictive thought, remained, as this reading from the edge to the center suggests, close to the interests of the liberal bourgeoisie and Christian thought. Conclusions: LPDP was the discussion platform for problems of a socio-national group that remained as an object of reflection and not as a political subject. The reduced amount of images of popular sectors, as well as their mediated depictions and continuous infantilization, showcase to what extent the attempts to represent popular groups actually had the opposite outcome.
