The path of total quality management implementation in a developing country: Peru
    (Centar for Quality, 2020-01-01)
This research examines the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in Peru based on nine factors. The questionnaires were sent in 2006, 2011 and 2017 to the presidents and managers of Peruvian companies. The objective is to study the evolution of quality in Peru. The results showed an improvement from 2006 to 2011; in 2011 and 2017 the companies maintained a steady state result.. The Quality Management System (QMS) is a key element used to explain a statistically significant difference in two factors for companies that have implemented or not from 2006 to 2011. However, the studies conducted in 2011 and 2017 had significant differences in all success factors. The contributions of this paper are: (a) Information on TQM factors in Peruvian companies in more than a decade; (b) a comparison in three periods (2006, 2011 and 2017) about the implementation of TQM in Peru and (c) the identification of the areas that Peruvian companies need to improve if they want to be more competitive.

Total quality management in Peruvian goods companies during the COVID-19 pandemic
    (Emerald Publishing Limited, 2022-06-02)
Purpose The aim of this research is to empirically assess the nine dimensions of the Total Quality Management (TQM) model, which have been categorized into four blocks: the top management block, the supplier block, the process management block and the customer block. The nine dimensions represent key strategic activities of company performance. A comparative analysis of companies with ISO 9001 certification and those without certification in a developing country during the COVID-19 pandemic is carried out. Design/methodology/approach A survey was administered to the management of 259 Peruvian goods companies (in the mining, repair and manufacturing sectors) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey consisted of 35 Likert-scale items, which were grouped into the following nine TQM dimensions: Top management (leadership), quality planning, quality audit and assessment, product design, suppliers' quality management, process control and improvement, education and training, quality circles and focus on customer satisfaction. Then, Cronbach's alpha, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, the Mann–Whitney U test and means were computed for each of the dimensions. This analysis made it possible to estimate significant differences between ISO 9001 certified and non-certified goods companies in terms of the dimensions. Findings The results showed that, for ISO 9001 certified companies, the averages for all of the dimensions were significantly different from those of non-certified companies, except for the education and training dimension. ISO 9001 certified companies scored higher than non-certified companies in the TQM dimensions. For both certified and non-certified companies, the leadership dimension had the highest average and the quality circles dimension had the lowest average. Originality/value This study addresses two main gaps highlighted in the research on quality management: the application of Quality Management Systems (QMS) in developing countries like Peru, and the impact of ISO 9001 on the performance of goods companies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biosecurity in the workplace and a QMS during the COVID-19 pandemic: A survey for Peruvian goods companies
    (Taylor & Francis, 2022-10-27)
Objectives. This study analyzes the differences between goods companies with a Standard No. ISO 9001:2015 quality management system (QMS) and those without, in terms of implementation of biosecurity measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study shows whether having a QMS helped companies to implement the biosecurity measures required to continue operating during a pandemic. Methods. The sample was composed of 145 Peruvian goods companies. The empirical data were collected through a questionnaire sent to company presidents, general managers and department heads. The questionnaire focused on four biosecurity dimensions in the workplace: protocols, preventive actions, biosecurity processes and risk management. Results. The study found that companies with a QMS (Standard No. ISO 9001:2015) significantly differed from companies without in the implementation of three of the four biosecurity dimensions. Conclusions. This study is useful for academia and companies because it identifies the main differences between certified and non-certified companies, in terms of adoption of biosecurity measures. This study highlights the importance of a QMS to respond to hazardous situations like a global health crisis, but also provides useful information for the strategic decision-making process of companies.

Social enterprises, total quality management and quality management systems: A study of the ISO 9001:2015 implementation in Peru
    (Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2026-01-01)
Social enterprises are key actors in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, yet quality management remains largely neglected. Using a sample of 138 social enterprises, this study aims to evaluate their performance across nine critical dimensions of total quality management (TQM). The results show strong performance in the Leadership, Quality Audit and Assessment, Customer Satisfaction Focus, and Process Control and Improvement dimensions, while challenges remain in the other dimensions. Furthermore, ISO 9001:2015-certified enterprises exhibited significantly higher scores than non-certified enterprises across all dimensions. Finally, heterogeneity analyses reveal that performance varies according to enterprise size. Based on the results, actionable strategies are discussed.

Quality in Peruvian Service Companies in the Context of COVID-19
    (Growing Science, 2023-11-03)
The motivation of this study is to provide empirical evidence of service companies’ performance regarding nine dimensions in a total quality management model during the COVID-19 pandemic. The nine dimensions highlight strategic company activities, and it allows a comparative analysis of the overall effect of having a QMS such as ISO 9001:2015 on Peruvian service companies. A total of 630 Peruvian service companies were surveyed for this study. The questionnaire included 35 Likert-scale items that were further classified into nine (9) dimensions. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to estimate any significant differences between the ISO 9001 certified and non-certified companies. Our findings showed that the performance of ISO 9001:2015 certified companies was significantly higher than that of non-certified companies in all dimensions. Moreover, our findings showed that managers in ISO 9001:2015 certified companies effectively implemented the nine dimensions of the model. The originality of this study lies in proving the positive effect of having a QMS in service companies in a context of slow economic growth and decline of consumer demand such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings might encourage service companies, especially those in developing countries, to allocate the necessary resources to obtain a QMS such as the ISO 9001:2015.

QMS and biosecurity measures in Peruvian services companies during the COVID-19 pandemic
    (Inderscience Publishers, 2025-01-01)
This research presents the results of a comparative analysis related to the adoption of measures to prevent and control the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic between services companies with/without ISO 9001 quality management systems (QMSs). For this purpose, an empirical study was conducted with a sample of 648 Peruvian services companies. Data were collected using questionnaires based on four measures against COVID-19: preventive actions, protocols, biosecurity processes and risk management. Descriptive and inferential techniques were implemented to analyse the data. The study found that companies with ISO 9001 scored higher than non-certified companies in the implementation of the four analysed measures against COVID-19. However, these differences were not significant in the case of protocols and risk management. Overall, this study empirically assessed the importance of having a QMS to meet more quickly and effectively government requirements during contingencies such as a global health crisis.
