Item type:Publication, Exploring the Influence of Innovation Management Tools on Product Innovation - the Case of Peruvian Innovative Firms(Society of Sytematic Innovation, 2020-09-01)This paper investigates the influence of innovation management tools on product innovation in 84 Peruvian companies that received public funding to carry out innovation projects. The empirical exploratory study is based on a comprehensive questionnaire for collecting data and is analysed using a binary Probit method. The results indicate that although the use of tools is scarce in Peruvian companies, innovation management tools influence product innovation. Furthermore, all the evidence shows that innovation management is important, and therefore the innovation process must be structured and systematized. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Exploring Enabling Factors for Innovation Outcomes. A Firm-Level Analysis(EAFIT University, 2020-07-28)Major innovation research has been primarily focused on developed countries, creating a gap in the literature related to innovation processes in emerging markets, such as Latin America. Even as some studies are aimed toward this region, their approach is usually only from the standpoint of an R&D funding perspective. This paper aims to discuss the relationship between resources for innovation and sources of innovation with innovation outcomes, using a sample of Peruvian companies, which received public funds oriented to the developing of innovative activities. Results found evidence that the presence of resources for innovation and sources of innovation have a positive influence on innovation outcomes. Moreover, resources for innovation are related to non-technological innovation, with internal R&D being the most carried out by companies even when it is not related to product nor process innovation. While sources of innovation are related to product innovation, firms demonstrated an incipient use of inter-firm collaboration strategies as its sources it. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Exploring the relationship between KIBS co-locations and the innovativeness of manufacturing firms in Latin America(Asociacion Espanola de Ciencia Regional, 2020-01-01)The literature provides empirical evidence on the importance of geographic location for an effective provision of knowledge intensive business services (KIBS). According to the postulates of territorial servitization, KIBS are also fundamental for the development of manufacturing firms. Despite this, KIBS can be an important source of innovation. In Latin America there is still little attention paid to KIBS, both from academia and from policy makers. The purpose of this research is to analyse the relationship between KIBS co-locations and the innovativeness of the manufacturing firms in context of emerging countries. Drawing on the World Bank Enterprise Survey (WBES) for Latin-American countries, authors analysed 3,029 manufacturing firms using the OLS method. Findings indicated that manufacturing firms’ locations based on KIBS proximity, is a critical determinant of innovativeness. This relationship is considerably stronger in Central American countries, while in South America this relationship is negative, which leads to debate.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Assessing the effects of human capital composition, innovation portfolio and size on manufacturing firm performance(Emerald, 2020-09-04)Purpose This paper aims to focus on the effects of human capital composition, innovation portfolio and size on manufacturing firms’ performance. Moreover, it seeks to empirically identify the levels of education that are significant in labour productivity. Design/methodology/approach The resource-based view (RBV) theory is applied using data gathered from the National Innovation Survey in the Manufacturing Industries of Peru. Using the ordinary least squares method on a sample of 584 Peruvian manufacturing firms, the effects on firm performance of two subsamples according to innovation portfolio and firm size are determined. Findings The direct effects of human capital composition on productivity show that the higher the workers’ educational level, the higher the productivity. However, if this relationship is analysed in terms of the innovation portfolio, the authors find that labour productivity in companies with product–service innovation is greater (i.e. more significant) than in traditional manufacturing firms with only product innovations. Similarly, if this relationship is compared in terms of company, the authors find that large companies are more significant than small and medium-sized enterprises. Practical implications The study furthers the understanding of how the relationship between human capital composition, innovation portfolio and size of manufacturing firms positively affects labour productivity. Hence, it can help managers to craft their innovation portfolio according to the educational level of their human capital. This could require that not only human resource management innovates, but also that strategic partnerships be developed with educational establishments to boost training towards product–service innovation. Originality/value This study’s results provide confirmation that the configuration of human resources, innovation portfolio and size plays a significant role on manufacturing firms’ performance, particularly in the context of developing countries. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Exploring the effects of innovation strategies and size on manufacturing firms’ productivity and environmental impact(MDPI AG, 2021-03-02)In economies that are based on natural resources, efforts to achieve sustainability still seem unclear, especially in manufacturing companies. As a result, from a business perspective, many manufacturers have adopted various strategies to maintain their competitiveness in line with environmental regulations. In addition to product and process innovation, we have analyzed innovation based on product–service innovation (PSI), or servitization, which is seen as key to promoting more resource-efficient economies. This study examines the effects of innovation strategies on productivity and environmental impact. Based on data extracted from the National Innovation Survey of the manufacturing industries of Peru, a sample of 791 companies were analyzed. Our findings indicate that, although only a few companies carry out product and process innovation and especially product–service innovation, when they do, they have a positive effect on both productivity and environmental impact. However, this relationship is affected by the size of the company. Thus, the innovation strategies have a greater positive effect on environmental impact in large companies than companies with fewer than 50 employees. Finally, despite the importance of product–service innovation, it seems that this strategy is not yet established in Peruvian manufacturing companies. Given the positive effect on productivity and environmental impact, we conclude by emphasizing the importance of establishing public policies aimed at disseminating and promoting this type of innovation, with specific support for companies with fewer than 50 employees. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Are Peruvian manufacturing firms product-based or service-based businesses? Effects of innovation activities, employee level of education and firm size(Taylor & Francis, 2021-10-06)Using survey data from 1438 Peruvian manufacturing firms, we explore multiple and simultaneous relationships between the effects of innovation activities, employee level of education, and the firm size on manufacturing firms’ innovation outcomes. We find that there is a positive relationship between innovation activities, employee level of education, and firm size. In addition, innovation activities have direct and positive effects on product and service innovation. However, employee level of education has positive indirect effects, especially on product innovation. The study also highlights that there is a negative direct relationship between size and service innovation. Thus, it is important to establish public policies aimed to promote service innovation in manufacturing firms, with specific support for small firms. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Effects of the use of digital technologies on the performance of firms in a developing country: Are there differences between creative and manufacturing industries?(SciKA, 2022-01-01)This paper aims to analyse the effects of the use of digital technologies on firms’ net sales and productivity. The technology adoption approach is applied in empirical research using data from the National Enterprise Survey in Peru. Using the OLS method on a sample of 2,970 firms from creative and manufacturing industries in Peru, the effects of digital technologies on net sales and productivity are determined. Findings indicate that there is a positive relationship. However, these relationships can be different depending on the type of digital technology, the size of the firm and the manager’s gender proportion. We found that most of these technologies are more commonly related to creative industries than manufacturing firms. These relationships have greater statistical significance to net sales in large companies within both types of industry. However, SMEs have greater statistical significance with respect to productivity in both types of industries. Lastly, given the positive effect on these relationships, we conclude by highlighting the importance of managers crafting their technology portfolio and digital capabilities properly and the need for further research to determine the performance of companies in the context of developing countries. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, The effects of innovation activities and size on technological innovation in South American manufacturing firms(Inderscience Publishers, 2022-01-01)The process innovation approach is applied in an exploratory research using data gathered from the World Bank Enterprises Survey (WBES). Using probit models on a sample of 1,965 manufacturing firms from seven South American countries, the effects of innovation activities on product and process innovation are determined. Findings indicate that there is a positive relationship. However, these relationships can be different depending on the type of innovation and the size of the firm. We found that most of these activities are related more to product innovation than process innovation, and these relationships have greater statistical significance in SMEs than large companies. Lastly, given the positive effect on these relationships, we conclude by highlighting the importance of managers crafting their innovation portfolios properly and the need for further research to determine the innovative behaviour of manufacturing companies in the context of their respective developing country.
