Item type:Publication, Using cinema to enhance moral reasoning and cognitive complexity of Amazonian indigenous leaders(Routledge, 2025-01-01)Several research studies acknowledge the pedagogical and ethical potential of cinema, as well as its utility for moral education. With this in mind and utilizing a mixed-method approach, this paper presents the qualitative changes in cognitive complexity and moral reasoning observed in a group of Amazonian indigenous adults after their participation in an intercultural moral education program using film discussions. Participants were nine Shipibo-Konibo, Awajún and Asháninka peoples, with formal education, and familiar with cinema, from the Amazonian region of Ucayali, Peru. To assess cognitive complexity, the McDaniel and Lawrence scale was employed, while moral reasoning was evaluated using the Heinz dilemma. Qualitative content analysis revealed a development in cognitive complexity and moral reasoning among certain participants. The results are discussed with an emphasis on aspects of the program that can be replicated when working with Amazonian indigenous peoples.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Final Words: A Critical Look at the Different Approaches to Addressing Rural Areas(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2026-01-01)It is pleasant to write this text commenting on the chapters of this book, which I have read with interest. Undoubtedly, studies on rural areas have increased in psychology in recent years. Traditionally, psychology mostly focused on Western, urban populations with average educational levels, an approach that left large groups of people out of its scope. Indeed, when psychology began to formulate itself in terms of an autonomous scientific discipline, it was not very interested in considering the cultural context or the subject-culture relationship. In this sense, it is gratifying to see this renewed interest that psychology has today in rural contexts and the people who inhabit them, as it speaks to an approach and recognition of diversity that are important for our discipline.
