Item type:Publication, Effects of the violation of the equivalence principle at DUNE(American Physical Society, 2020-09-28)A number of different effects of the violation of the equivalence principle (VEP), taken as subleading mechanism of neutrino flavor oscillation, are examined within the framework of the DUNE experiment. We study the possibility of obtaining a misleading neutrino oscillation parameter region caused by our unawareness of VEP. Additionally, we evaluate the impact on the measurement of $CP$ violation and the distinction of neutrino mass hierarchy at DUNE. Besides, limits on VEP for a wide variety of textures of the matrix that connects neutrino gravity eigenstates to flavor eigenstates are imposed. An extra task of our study is to set limits on Hamiltonian added terms considering different energy dependencies (${E}^{d\ensuremath{-}3}$, with $d=3$, 4, 5, 6) that can be associated to the usual Lorentz violating terms defined in the Standard Model extension Hamiltonian. In order to understand our results, approximated analytical three neutrino oscillation probability formulae are derived. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Uncovering the Majorana nature through a precision measurement of the CP phase(American Physical Society, 2022-02-01)We show the possibility to discover the neutrino nature by measuring the Majorana $CP$ phase at the DUNE experiment. This phase is turned on by a decoherence environment, possibly originated by physics at the Planck scale. A sizable distortion in the measurement of the Dirac $CP$ violation phase ${\ensuremath{\delta}}_{CP}$ is observed at DUNE when compared with T2HK measurement due to decoherence and the non-null Majorana phase. Being that, when the measurement of the Majorana phase is performed at DUNE, it reaches a precision of $23(21)%$ for a decoherence parameter $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}=4.5(5.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}24}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}$ and a Majorana phase equal to $1.5\ensuremath{\pi}$. The latter precision is similar to the one obtained at the T2K experiment at its current Dirac $CP$ violation phase measurement.1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Comprehensive study of natural radioactivity in building materials: A case study in Ica, Peru(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2024-03-01)This study evaluates radon exhalation rates and assesses the potential radiological risks of external exposure to primordial radionuclides in building materials employed in the Ica region of Peru, particularly those with high uranium content. The radon exhalation rates are currently measured using a combination of a closed chamber and an active monitor. We proposed a novel method that effectively ensured a hermetic seal for the closed chamber and guaranteed that the efficient maintenance of secular equilibrium. The obtained results ranged from below the detection limit (BDL) to a maximum of 52.3 mBq · kg−1h−1. Gamma spectrometry was employed to measure the concentrations of radionuclides by utilizing a 3′ × 3′ NaI detector. The analysis of cement samples revealed a strong positive correlation between the activity concentration of radium and the radon exhalation rate. The activity concentrations for radionuclides varied, with values ranging from BDL to 60.6 mBq · kg−1h−1 for 226Ra, BDL to 22.3 mBq · kg−1h−1 for 232Th, and BDL to 1074 mBq · kg−1h−1 for 40K. These findings contribute valuable insight to decision-making processes in the Peruvian construction industry, particularly regarding material safety and radiological risk management. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Charge readout electronics for the DUNE horizontal drift far detector: design and performance in ProtoDUNE-HD(Institute of Physics, 2026-08-01)DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment currently under construction, whose far detectors will be the largest liquid argon time projection chambers ever built. This detector design calls for custom-built cryogenic front-end electronics to meet its performance requirements. This paper describes the charge readout electronics that will be used in the DUNE horizontal drift (HD) far detector and presents performance results using data from the ProtoDUNE-HD detector, a 770 ton liquid argon time projection chamber operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2024 that served as the final prototype of the DUNE HD design. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE’s horizontal-drift far-detector module(Springer Nature, 2026-07-01)This paper reports on the capabilities in reconstructing and identifying atmospheric neutrino interactions in one of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment’s (DUNE) far detector modules, a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) with horizontal drift (FD-HD) of ionization electrons. The reconstruction is based upon the workflow developed for DUNE’s long-baseline oscillation analysis, with some necessary machine-learning models’ retraining and the addition of features relevant only to atmospheric neutrinos such as the neutrino direction reconstruction. Where relevant, the impact of the detection of the charged particles of the hadronic system is emphasized, and comparisons are carried out between the case when lepton-only information is considered in the reconstruction (as is the case for many neutrino oscillation experiments), versus when all particles identified in the LArTPC were included. Three neutrino direction reconstruction methods have been developed and studied for the atmospheric analyses: using lepton-only information, using all reconstructed particles, and using only correlations from reconstructed hits. The results indicate that incorporating more than just lepton information significantly improves the resolution of both neutrino direction and energy reconstruction. The angle reconstruction algorithms developed in this work result in no strong dependence on particle direction for reconstruction efficiencies or neutrino flavor identification. This comprehensive review of the reconstruction of atmospheric neutrinos in DUNE’s FD-HD LArTPC is the first step towards developing a first neutrino oscillation sensitivity analysis, which will ready DUNE for its first measurements.5 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Environmental Alpha Radiation from the Soil at a Prehispanic Ancient Sacred Site in Lima, Perú(Polskie Towarzystwo Inzynierii Ekologicznej (PTIE), 2023-01-01)In the present work, we investigate the concentration of radon and its alpha-emitting progeny at the archaeological site of Huaca 20 in Lima, Peru. The site holds significant cultural and historical importance as an ancient pre-Inca ruin, providing valuable insights into the lives and rituals of its former inhabitants. We quantified the radon levels accurately with passive CR-39™ detectors deployed within specially designed chambers at the site for 28 days. In a controlled laboratory environment, we processed the detectors afterward, examining and analyzing the resulting tracks using advanced microscopy and the ImageJ analysis software. The ground-level concentration of radon and its alpha-emitting progeny was determined, revealing elevated levels ranging from 2.4 ± 0.6 to 8.9 ± 0.9 (kBq/m3). These findings underscore the unique presence of radon at Huaca 20 and highlight the potential impact on microorganisms at ground level. Likewise, these results can contribute to studies on the radiological risks faced by visitors, excavators and archaeologists. Finally, we show the spatial distribution of radon concentrations within the site by creating an iso-concentra-tion map. The iso-concentration map reveals a relation between areas with elevated radon levels and the good preservation of funerary contexts. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Application of Statistical Methods for the Characterization of Radon Distribution in Indoor Environments: A Case Study in Lima, Peru(Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), 2025-01-01)This study evaluates the effectiveness of advanced statistical and geospatial methods for analyzing radon concentration distributions in indoor environments, using the district of San Martín de Porres, Lima, Peru, as a case study. Radon levels were monitored using LR-115 nuclear track detectors over three distinct measurement periods between 2015 and 2016, with 86 households participating. Detectors were randomly placed in various rooms within each household. Normality tests (Shapiro–Wilk, Anderson–Darling, and Kolmogorov–Smirnov) were applied to assess the fit of radon concentrations to a log-normal distribution. Additionally, analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the influence of environmental and structural factors on radon variability. Non-normally distributed data were normalized using a Box–Cox transformation to improve statistical assumptions, enabling subsequent geostatistical analyses. Geospatial interpolation methods, specifically Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) and Kriging, were employed to map radon concentrations. The results revealed significant temporal variability in radon concentrations, with geometric means of 146.4 Bq·m−3, 162.3 Bq·m−3, and 150.8 Bq·m−3, respectively, across the three periods. Up to 9.5% of the monitored households recorded radon levels exceeding the safety threshold of 200 Bq·m−3. Among the interpolation methods, Kriging provided a more accurate spatial representation of radon concentration variability compared to IDW, allowing for the precise identification of high-risk areas. This study provides a framework for using advanced statistical and geospatial techniques in environmental risk assessment.1
